2009 : A snaphot of the international year gone by
With the 5th ODI, BD will complete their international schedule for 2009. Here is the year in a snapshot:
2008 ended with a thrilling ‘almost’ chase of what could have been record breaking 520 vs. Sri Lanka in a test match.
2009 started with the 2nd test match of the series and a heavy loss for Bangladesh.
2009 continued with a tri series featuring SL and ZIM. A shock loss to ZIM kicked the ODI year off but a thrashing of SL to reach the finals with a bonus points set things moving in the right path with heroics from Shakib who would own the year in BD cricket. The final with SL was another low scoring thriller with this time, SL holding their nerve to deny BD a 2nd consecutive win against a senior team. Some questionable bowling changes allowed for Murali to destroy BD with the bat instead of the ball like he has been so accustomed to after SL was down 5 wickets for only 6 runs chasing 153.
Next up was a 3 game series against ZIM, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of the 14 matches these two teams would face each other throughout the year. The series started with a 2nd consecutive loss to ZIM despite a 10-4-11-3 spell from Shakib in a effort to defend 124. BD salvaged the series by wining the final two games.
A long break followed with the next assignment being the World Cup T20. BD came with expectations of the 2nd round and a few possible upsets along the way in the world stage of this exciting new format. They put up a fight with IND and were it not for a missed stumping of Yuvraj BD could have tasted victory. Naeem also impressed with some late 6s in the innings but a test style innings by Raqibul and Mushy had made that a little too late. BD was shocked by Ireland in the next match and were out of the tournament much earlier than expected. 2nd consecutive big game loss to the Irish in a world cup setting. They still managed the number 8 ranking for the upcoming WC in 2010 as IRE has to qualify and AUS had worse losses to WI and SL. The loss was an embarrassment not only on the field, but by the casual attitude of the players to the new format. Luckily, the loss would bring an end to the Ashraful captaincy and trigger an exciting final half of 2009 for BD fans.
BD came to the West Indies amidst a player strike. Being forced to play a B (maybe C) team through no fault of their own, BD secured their first ever Test win/series win abroad. Mash injured himself by day 2 of the first test and allowed Shakib to step up as the captain for the remainder of the year. And disappoint he did not. He led from the front, brought innovation and a certain cockiness with him and started pressure straight in the face and delivered. The wins were not as comprehensive as a BD fan would have hoped them to be, but nevertheless it was a step in the right direction. The two test wins were followed by 3 ODIs and another brownwash fro the BD team. The series conclude with a T20 loss which again showed a lack of respect and effort by the team to the new format of the game.
Next up was a 5 game series in ZIM which would be won 4-1 with a loss in game 3. The series was full of personal/country bests for members of both squads including a world record breaking 194* by Coventry of Zimbabwe. Tamim (highest individual score) and Shakib (fastest century) established themselves with the bat as major threats as BD still struggled to find the right pace bowling in Mash’s absence.
A return series in late Oct brought back ZIM and after an unexpected first game loss, Shakib vowed to win the series 4-1. Shakib continued his form and Razzak came back roaring following his absence to correct his illegal action. As of now the series stands at 3-1 to Bangladesh and here’s hoping we don’t end the year the same way we started: a loss to Zim.
Overall record:
Tests : 2-1 (WI 2-0, SL 0-1)
ODIs : 13 – 5 (ZIM 9-4, SL 1-1, WI 3-0)
T20s : 0 -3 (IND 0-1, IRE 0-1, WI 0-1)
The men of the year:
- Shakib : 3 man of the match ODI, 1 man of the match Test, 3 man of the series ODI, 1 man of the series Tests
- Tamim : 1 man of the match Test, 2 man of the match ODI (1 shared with Coventry), 1 man of the series ODI
- Razzak : 2 man of the match ODI
- 1 ODI man of the match each : Raqiubul, Mashrafe, Riad, Nazmul, Ash, Dolar
Major stories of the year:
- Defeat of SL and first appearance in a multinational final featuring a top 8 team
- Almost winning the final against SL
- Comeback series defeat of ZIM
- Embarrassed by IRE and first round exit in T20 WC
- Ashraful sacked as captain to be replaced by Mash
- Mash injures himself leaving Shakib to take the reigns
- BD wins fist away test series and completes first whitewash (vs. WI)
- Razzak returns after rehabilitation
- BD whitewashes WI in ODI series
- BD loses to WI in one off T20
- Shakib becomes top ranked ODI allrounder in the world
- Records/Milestones get conquered as BD beats a considerably stronger ZIM in recent years 4-1 (notably Ash crossing 3K)
- Shakib makes Test XI of the year and is named test cricketer of the year by Wisden
- After losing first match to ZIM, BD roars back to take the series (3-1 as of this writing)
- Razzak finds form
- Ash completes 150th ODI

It was a nice to go back and recall some achievements by our team. Shaki got the #1 ranking in end of Jan 2009. (Ash's 3k or 150 matches are no news to me).
By the way, the boards (including BCB) don't think of calendar years. They always do it 08-09 or 09-10. That is why the current Zim series is considered as the first series of the year. Weird, I know.

This is some good work by dear Raynman bhai! You always do very good analytic work with clean clear presentation! Thank you for this picture, we see what has been done and where we need to go in 2010.

Nice thread. Thanks for your effort.
It was a mixed bag, seems like it. Some of our biggest achievements so far, but the shock loss to Ireland pulls things down.
That loss to SL in the finals still hurts though.

Nicely said. Too bad we didn't get to play too many G8 sides.

lol, I left out Bashar's natok as well.
ICL returnees were also left out as it didn't have any impact on our international aspect whatsoever.

Nice thread thanks.
Also this year BD played small number of ODIs and Tests. This figure should increase. We also should play more against top 8

If things go as planned we should have 2 tests with IND, 1 with NZ and 4 with ENG all by mid year.
That should leave the remainder of the year for another 10 ODIs with ZIM

Are we gonna play again home and away series against ZIM? We should play more with New Zealand and West Indies both test and ODI.

I was actually waiting for a thread like this. you are a true stats man, Raynman.
By the way, how do we compare (in ODI, Test, T20 and individually) against top teams?
My biggest disapointment was the T20 loss once again against the Irish. The pain was lot more since I was present at the stadium to watch this panful match.
The loss against SL in the final, I was watching it at my in laws in Sydney and nearly ended up crying (lol). Thanks to Rubel Hossain!!

Total ODI played this year: 19
Win: 14 --> 10 vs Zim, 3 vs WI, 1 vs SL
Loss: 5 --> 4 vs Zim, 1 vs SL
We did win all 4 odi series which is a new record for us!
series were:
Zimbabwe in Bangladesh January 2009 (2-1)
Bangladesh in West Indies July 2009 (3-0)
Bangladesh in Zimbabwe August 2009 (4-1)
Zimbabwe in Bangladesh November 2009 (4-1)
Our players got 13 MOM award out of 16 in those series!

All bi lateral series that is. We went 1-2 in the tri series.
By the way the other 3 man of matches in the ZIM wins went to Chigambura and Coventry shared with Tamim in the 194* match.

IMO, 2009 is very much a repeat of 2006 - a win against Sri Lanka, a Test match that we could have won but lost, and rest of the year is filled with fixtures against minnows.

Does that mean we'll beat India next year?

Oh, our almost won Test match (against a real Test side ie NZ) was in October 2008. Well, close enough to the 12 months period that we are analyzing
