Lloyd: .. to put his foot down and ask for a team he wants

Dhoni needs to put his foot down - Lloyd

Clive Lloyd, former West Indies captain and leader of one of the most dominant teams in cricket history, feels the time has come for MS Dhoni to put his foot down and ask for a team he wants. That is the only way, Lloyd reckoned, that Dhoni can lead India back to the summit of Test cricket...
"When I became captain I decided, fine, I have to do something different," Lloyd told ESPNcricinfo at St Lawrence County Ground in Canterbury where he had come to announce the shortlist for the 2011 ICC Awards. "I just put my foot down and said this is what I want. If you are going to be the captain you have to fashion things in your way and you have to tell the board exactly you are trying to do it. And they must back it."
The West Indies Cricket Board did not dispute Lloyd's decision. "They did [back it]. And that is how we came out trumps."..

I understand he said the above in contest of Ind. I wanted to put the same analogy for BD. Would it work? All successful captains were #1 performers, which Shakib is, they also had this aura that demanded attention of the board, selectors, players and fans. The coach must back the captain up on this one for sure to succeed. Back then (Lloyd's time) there wasn't a separate selectors panel I recall. A part of the board decided on the playing 15.
Is it time for Shakib to do that as well or we are too much politics driven to even recognize that for successful captains teams? Richards, Taylor, Waugh, Imran Khan, Vittori all had their way to pick and chose players for their team.

The thing is, when Clive Lloyd put his foot down and demanded the right to choose the team he wanted, the West Indies were already a team on the ascendancy and had had a handful of world class players. In Fire in Babylon, they start the documentary in 1975 with their team being whitewashed in Australia, but as humiliating as that was for them, we can't forget that they had just won the first World Cup! All they needed to dominate in all forms of the game was some excellent fast bowlers and admittedly, Clive Lloyd himself was able to unearth and nurture many of them. India's situation is comparable but their star batsmen are all on the verge of retirement and even if they unearth some amazing bowlers, they will not be able to replicate the WI teams of the 70s and 80s.
The point is, Shakib does not have the same quality of players in his team or in reserve, and even the ones who show indications that they could be world class, need a lot of polishing, which a 24 year old still coming to terms with his game, is not in a position to do. It's also worth mentioning that Clive Lloyd was not the best player in his team but commanded respect, because he was a senior father figure. (Words from the movie) Shakib commands respect with his performances, but there is something still lacking about his presence. (I don't mean that in a bad way, many great batsmen and bowlers didn't have that)

Bravo Navo!!! You are 100% correct. Yes, it's true Shakib does have to step his foot down now and demand respect.....look at Imran Khan....still today, Wasim/Javed/Waqar they recall him with respect because he had that x-factor what it neede to be a great leader.....but then again he was in his 40's the time Pakistan won the cup, whereas Shakib's still 24...a looooong way to go....but the amount of patience that he showed despite his age is commendable....yes there are lackings in him....I think it's best if the board/media leaves him alone and lets him come into terms. I would blame the board for this. Whatever situation BD team is facing today is only because of the fact they chose a cricket-illiterate person as the Chairman.....hmph!

I don't see how that would even affect our team. Beside Shakib and Tamim (maybe Riad and 100% fit Mash) bangladesh dosen't have the pool of players to cause fear in the heart of the opponents.

riyad
man, we do make ourselves a laughing stock if we present such cricketers as those who can cause a fear in the heart of opponents.......for tamim, ask england, for shakib, ask new zealand, but for riyad, what he's done to cause fear....and dont present me the 2010 series against india being a flat track bully against indian bowlers which can be thrashed by afghanistan too

The reason Riad was in the bracket is because it was ment as when he is in good form. First understand what others are talking bout before jumping to a conclusion

LOL in form or out of form...Riyad is nowhere near the kind of player that "strikes fear in the heart of opponents". He is a utility player...bowls 6/7 overs, bats at #6/7. I don't think our opponents even mention Riyad or Naeem in their pregame meetings. Ashraful maybe, but not Riyad :p
