This is a slightly misleading statement. It implies social gatherings that are being photographed are the only social interactions we have. There are more informal social gatherings that are not captured - a meal with just one family, hanging out at a coffee-shop with colleagues, students hanging out at the lounge or playing sports. All of these tend to be fairly diverse.
