Selectors play hooky with Ashraful
STAFF CORRESPONDENT
The talented Mohammed Ashraful, who has done the country proud as the youngest Test centurion is currently wrangled in a tug of war over his inclusion in the BCB Development Squad which plays England on Wednesday.
The batsman — currently out of form — has recently been the talk of the cricketing arena as a rumour made the rounds that he is under an unofficial ban and will not be selected to play the One-Day warm-up match against England.
Ashraful lost his Test and ODI spot in the national side due to a poor run of scores and rash shots during the away series in Pakistan in September and was overlooked during the recently concluded Test series against England.
He was named the vice captain of the BCB Development squad and has been reportedly working hard to make a come back.
It was learnt that it was coach Dav Whatmore who recommended the decision to give Ashraful a total rest from international cricket for the time being.
But the current cop of selectors insisted that he be considered for selection in the warm up match. Sources in BCB, however, allege that Whatmore has subsequently softened to the idea of Ashraful’s inclusion in the Development Squad.
Chief of the junior selector panel Jahangir Shah was reluctant to disclose information regarding the ongoing drama. “We will take the final decision tonight and I can’t say anything more,” he said. Shah, however, indicated that Ashraful is all set to play.
Chief Selector Faruque Ahmed also refused to comment on the issue saying he is not aware of any developments in the situation.
Ashraful, however, seemed confident of his place in the squad when he told New Age that the only thing he was concentrating on, was his strategy for a comeback. “I am looking forward to it and not thinking about anything else,” he said.
Unofficial ban? That sounds harsh.
