Things you miss most after moving back to Bangladesh

List things that you miss most. I will start.

1- Driving (safely)
2- Telecommunication

Bacon. (or rather BLT)
Quality, easily accessible coffee. (Yes there are some decent coffee, but I have to drive like 1 hour to go there in BD traffic.)
Good Steak.
Quality beer.
Comparably slow internet speed.
Clean Air.
Common curtesy.
Public transportation.
24 hours, restaurant/cafe/food/.
Home delivery food.
Not having to worry about power outage. (even with generator and IPS, its a nuisance)
Not having to worry about giving bribe for the most trivial things.
Not having to worry about getting car smashed or burned down, because you don't agree with the call for general strike.
Cooking for yourself.


Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few things I actually enjoy in BD or probably take it for granted. But this thread is for bitching/whining.

I've been back in Bangladesh for about 7 months now and I agree with what a lot of the posters above have said viz. missing good quality public transportation; politeness; clean air and neatness etc.

But I also miss the diverse recreational activities available abroad, like visiting nice bookshops/museums/theaters/cinemas etc. While some of the museums and theatres have been recently refurbished, disappointingly, the number of Bangla and English language bookshops have diminished significantly.

The most common recreational activity is eating out and this is reflected by the number of restaurants mushrooming up across Dhaka - most of which aren't of great quality. Don't get me wrong, there are obviously non-culinary recreational options available, but for those who enjoy going out and about regularly on evenings or weekends, you will exhaust your choices quickly.

During all my visit back I always miss the ultrafast internet.... other than that I am personally immuned to the traffic....

I do highly recommend people going back... Bangladesh offers tremendous opportunities if you want to invest...

Whatever blah said, but one gets used to it and do with whatever limited entertainment opportunities Bangladesh provides.

In western countries, whenever you see a stranger in elevator or public areas you smile and say hi/how are you. That is very uncommon in Dhaka. Rastay dekha hoile keu jodi hashi maira bole bhai kemon asen, taile bujhben apnar pant,jainga ekhoni shob niye jabe.

Things i miss in Bangladesh

1. Beaches and other natural beauties at beaches
2. Good movie theaters (we have only Cineplex and that too has very limited seat) and watching recent international flick at movie theater
3. Good public transportation system
4. Different varieties of food specially chocolates
5. Clean roads

Traffic jam and load shedding don't bother me much since we all are part of it. Load shedding is not a problem now since more or less we all use alternative source of electricity. And with a good route knowledge and timing sense, you can very much avoid traffic jam but not always

On the other hand I miss BD, not the other way around but when I visit I miss the weed, congestion free traffic, FANTASTIC weather, beaches and other natural beauties at beaches, and most importantly access to UCI or college libraries. Bangladeshey bhalo boi pawa boroi durlov. Try to get Handbook of Proof Theory and most likely you have to pay 100 bucks from Amazon while in USA you can get it cheap with rental fee.

We have a Sylheti bhai here (SM Hasan bhai), but he lives in Dhaka.

Well, things that you are likely to miss,

1. INTERNET : Yes, you are definitely going to miss the high speed internet that you're used. Though, from Bangladeshi perspective, things have gone a lot better than what it used to be when I moved back in 2007, still its nothing comparable to London's standard. Not too sure about connectivity status in Sylhet, but think you can get Banglalion Wimax 2 Mbps (unlimited download limit) for about TK 5250+15% vat. Not sure about the line or service quality.

But if your primary internet usage was for watching cricket, Bangladeshi and others, you won't be needing internet for that. One of the many sports channel will cover it for sure. Any series, any match, anywhere.

2. CABLE TV: If you are into watchin TV in general, you will miss the cable you had in London.
Here, you will get close to 100 channels, all but 10 will be good for nothing.
25 Bangladeshi channels, all copy cats of each other. They all go to news at the same time and tell the same story. Only good part is the non stop feed of cricket and good coverage of sports.
If you into following BPL (english football not the Bangladeshi t20), get ready for sleepless nights.
English movie channels are decent enough.
You will miss the digital cable and its record, rewind all those features.

3. You will miss walking into Tesco and doing your groceries peacefully.

4. Limited availability of entertainment, things like movies in theatre.

5. Driving around wouldn't be as bad as Dhaka, but yes, not much to drive around to in Sylhet.

I can go on and list few more thing that you will really miss, when you compare the standard of living between London and Sylhet. But the reality is, all these are temporary. I'm sure you have weighed all your pros and cons and finally made the decision to move back to Bangladesh.

All long as you can keep an open mind and ready to accept these changes, things will slowly become normal and you will get used to with it. First couple of years would be the hardest, after that, you won't probably miss a thing.

My only suggestion will be, dont come right now. Let the election be over this October and then move back. The current political and social environment might make your whole settling down a bit more frustrating.

Mo bhai, are you moving with your whole family, meaning wife and kids? I think then a lot of thing changes. Internet and other things will be of less concern. Then you have to think about good schools/coaching centers, good hospitals and etc. in Sylhet.

Thanks everyone for your input. It is really tough to convince every member of the family to agree and move back. I initially planned to move back in 2012 but could not. But the day is getting closer and unavoidable.

@Rabz bhai when I moved back you are welcome to Sylhet.
