ICC eyes June 2013 for first Test world championship

The International Cricket Council is eyeing June 2013 for the inaugural Test world championship and will use current rankings to decide the four playoff spots, CEO Haroon Lorgat told Australian radio on Sunday.

Test cricket, which has struggled to maintain its profile since the advent of Twenty20, currently has a rankings system but no tournament to determine the top Test nation.

The ICC has proposed a quadrennial tournament with the four best-performing nations to meet in semifinals before playing off for the world title in a bid to boost flagging interest in the longest form of the sport.

"I think the first possible opportunity for us to have a playoff is in 2013 which means that the current rankings table would need to be used," Lorgat said.

"For example, right now Australia would be struggling to qualify for the playoffs. But there may be another scenario with somebody else would also be in the frame depending on this result they might slip in."

Lorgat was speaking on the sidelines of the third day of the second Ashes Test between Australia, ranked fifth in the current Test standings, and fourth-placed England.

"Going forward we're looking at a league table that would be worked on points and for match winnings," Lorgat said, but details on how to treat draws, which occur regularly in Test cricket, were yet to be decided.

"One option is whichever is the highest ranked team would progress through. There's the possibility of the timeless Test, you've got to get to a result," he added.

Lorgat also confirmed the 2015 one-day international World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand would be stripped from 14 teams to 10, while the biennial Twenty20 World Cup tournament would be expanded from 12 to 16.

Sri Lanka will host the next Twenty20 World Cup in 2012. "In my view (the Twenty20 World Cup) is a better vehicle to develop the game, a better vehicle to promote the game, whereas the World Cup should be the flagship event, should be the best teams in the world," he said.

ওয়ানডে আর টি-টোয়েন্টি ক্রিকেটের উত্তেজনা, দর্শকপ্রিয়তা, ব্যবসা-সফলতার কাছে অনেকটাই হার মেনেছে টেস্ট ক্রিকেটের কৌশল, ধৈর্য আর সামর্থ্যের লড়াই। টেস্ট ক্রিকেটের অনেক পরে যাত্রা শুরু করেও ধীরে ধীরে বেশি জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠেছে ওয়ানডে ক্রিকেট। আর হালের টি-টোয়েন্টি ক্রিকেট তো ক্রিকেট-বাণিজ্যের অন্যতম অনুষঙ্গ হয়ে টেস্ট ও ওয়ানডে—দুটিকেই চোখ রাঙানো শুরু করেছে।

টেস্ট ক্রিকেটকে জনপ্রিয় করে তুলতে ওয়ানডে বা টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপের মতো টেস্ট বিশ্বকাপ শুরু করার ব্যাপারে অনেক দিন ধরেই গুঞ্জন শোনা যাচ্ছিল ক্রিকেট অঙ্গনে। এবার হয়তো সত্যি সত্যিই সেই উদ্যোগ নিতে যাচ্ছে আইসিসি। ২০১৩ সাল থেকে চার বছর পর পর টেস্ট বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজনের কথা চিন্তা করা হচ্ছে বলে জানিয়েছেন আইসিসির প্রধান নির্বাহী হারুন লরগাত। আর প্রথম টেস্ট বিশ্বকাপটা আইসিসি হয়তো ২০১৩ সালের জুনেই আয়োজন করতে পারে।

টেস্ট ক্রিকেটের বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজনের সবচেয়ে বড় প্রতিবন্ধকতা হলো, ফলাফল নির্ধারণের অনিশ্চয়তা। কোনো টেস্ট যদি নিষ্ফলা ড্র হয়, তাহলে তা কীভাবে পয়েন্ট তালিকায় অবস্থান নির্ধারণ করবে—এমন প্রশ্নের অবশ্য কোনো সদুত্তর দিতে পারেননি লরগাত। আইসিসিও ব্যাপারটিতে কোনো সিদ্ধান্তে উপনীত হয়নি বলেই জানিয়েছেন তিনি। তবে সম্ভাব্য সমাধানের ব্যাপারে তিনি যা বলেছেন, তা হাসিরই খোরাক হয়েছে। তিনি বলেছেন, ‘ফল না হওয়া পর্যন্ত খেলা চালিয়ে যেতে হবে। কোনো না কোনো সময় তো ফলাফল নির্ধারিত হবেই।’

এদিকে ২০১২ সালের টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপ শ্রীলঙ্কায় ও ২০১৫ সালের ওয়ানডে বিশ্বকাপ অস্ট্রেলিয়া ও নিউজিল্যান্ডে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে বলে জানিয়েছেন লরগাত। একই সঙ্গে আগামী বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণকারী দলের সংখ্যা কমানো-বাড়ানো হতে পারে বলে ইঙ্গিত দিয়েছেন তিনি। যেমন—২০১৫ সালের ওয়ানডে বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণকারী দলের সংখ্যা ১৪ থেকে কমিয়ে ১০ আর ২০১২ টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণকারী দলের সংখ্যা ১২ থেকে বাড়িয়ে ১৬-তে নেওয়া হতে পারে। সে ক্ষেত্রে টেস্ট খেলুড়ে ১০টি দেশের বাইরে ক্রিকেটের উদীয়মান দেশগুলো ওয়ানডে বিশ্বকাপে অংশগ্রহণের সুযোগ থেকে বঞ্চিত হবে। রয়টার্স।

ICC just started the processes of restricting Tests and ODI to a handful of elite nations and effectively killing the interest and growth for those formats in associate nations.

If some balance is not found between matches played by test teams not named IND, AUS, SA and ENG, cricket will suffer for the remaining teams as well.

From a Test standpoint, all the hard work of IRE and AFG will be for nothing.

Lets see how they determine the 10 from the WC. Its very likely that IRE/NED/AFG could end up replacing BD/ZIM/NZ/WI for those spots.

what are there plans for Ireland and Afghanistan? these two teams have real potential to be Test nations. Afghanistan can't play at home, but perhaps they can play all away/neutral tests like Pakistan. heck with all the cheating they do, Afghans deserve test status MORE than the pakis.

my understanding is that the format of test cricket will not change, but that the present bilateral series will count towards actual points and that will decide this playoff structure.

its a very bullshit thing that they've done the seedings from an *arbitrary* date so that the 4 kingmakers automatically qualify for the first playoff round. they should have started it from scratch after the world cup.
