miraz, you could try the free openoffice 2.0 suite as the writer programme allows you to save files in pdf format.

OpenOffice is like MS Office, minus Outlook. It grew out of Sun's initiative to compete with MS Office. Slowly but surely OpenOffice is becoming a solid alternative. In Linux, Solaris etc OpenOffice is the standard Office suite. It is "Open" because its licensed under GNU opensource; i.e free public domain software.

I usually use OpenOffice and/or ghostscript, although OpenOffice seems to be more user friendly (still buggy, but not a bad alternative to MSOffice; besides, Sun > MS anyways )

Buying a new laptop for my wife, it's a Toshiba Satelite with Windows Vista Home Basic.

Do you think, OpenOffice will run normally in this laptop? (I can pass you detail configuration if you need) If it works it will save a good amount of money.

Here's the config you need. Most recent version released is 2.3...but it works fine with 2.2 as well.

• 128 Mbytes RAM

OpenOffice will run perfectly fine on it. OpenOffice is way less resource hungry than MS Office. If you don't need collaboration tools of Outlook; then there is no reason for using MS Office. Only thing that is holding big corporations on MS Office is Outlook. It the corporate email suite and collaborations which is real strength of MS Office.

For personal usage, OpenOffice is as good if not better than MS Office.

Humm, a lot people use OpenOffice. I don't know why I don't like (or may be I never feel) OpenOffice/MS office. I always use LaTeX for preparing any text document.

For some reason, I don't think I can quite agree with you. I have used OpenOffice, but Office 2007 is the greatest office suite that was ever produced. OpenOffice is no match for Office 2007. BTW I haven't tried the latest version of OpenOffice, so my view is based on what I used 6-8 months ago.

Yea, its true it takes a good amount of resources, but if your computer can handle then it would be one of the best application that you will carry around with you. I believe almost all new laptops and desktops would be able to run it.

openoffice 2.0 is a useful and fully featured office suite. it does have some nice touches and is less of a memory hog for machines with less ram and slow processors. however, in terms of ease of use, microsoft office is the very best available for the moment. i have personally churned out on average at least 50,000 words each year for the last seven or eight years. openoffice 2.0 is on my old dell laptop with p II 400 cpu and 128 ram. i kept it there for ages and must have used it on and off for over two years but when it came to taking away that laptop for a serious writing trip to edinburgh, i had to install office 95

of course, much of this comes down to personal taste. however, if you use both side by side, unless you totally abhor bill gates, ms version comes out on top..

depends on what you are trying to accomplish. if it's simple word processing (e.g. resume, cover letter, rent agreement, term paper), openoffice is more than adequate. If you are trying to do fancy stuff like a biz document with diagrams, tables, lots of cross-references, huge size, etc then MS Word is still the best. Same holds true for PPT and Excel. (not as familiar with access). Oh and try out google suite of products - nifty for collaboration.

yes, it does come down to what you use it for. i write a lot of articles that have footnotes and endnotes. the annotation highlight feature in office versions from 2000 onwards have spoilt me so much that i simply can't use openoffice writer at all for such writing. however, for the odd letter or as you say, resume, open office is not going to let the side down. admittedly, if i had not been brought up on word 2 in windows 3.1, i would have gone to other suites more easily. in those days the alternative from lotus used to be serious competition..

Another a free software is Foxit Reader. Its a great program for ppl who want a new PDF reader. You can also write pdf documents of u download an extra package. The size is 2.2MB
