ball1. run of the mill 3/4 length ball outside off that the left handed langer defends without any problem. nothing that someone like mpumelelo mbangwa (say) or a dodda ganesh cannot manage on a decent day.

ball2. similar innocuous ball closer to the stumps. langer misjudges the length and inside edges onto the stumps. a lucky wkt.

ball3. decent ball that jags back off the seam into ponting and hits him on the shin. flintoff appeals even though it is clearly hitting outside off.

ball4. similar ball closer to the stumps. ponting steers it to gully.

ball5. similar ball on offstump line that moves back with good bounce. ponting defends awkwardly to the legside.

every test match I have watched, even the worst of the lot have at least 5-6 overs like that. great bowlers like akram and walsh would bowl whole spells at an even higher intensity !

boss, we still have a long way to go. but in another 20-30 years hopefully we will really make it. when no person shall go hungry, no kid shall be outside school.

and BD will make it too, write it down if you want. wait another 10-15 years and you will start seeing it. we just had a head start because we had our independence a quarter century earlier. even as recently as 1980's India was seen as a basket case. don't care about what others are saying. you will get more and more bad press from western media as you start doing better. take that as proof of improvement.

স্বপ্নাতীত একটা ব্যাপারই যেন ঘটতে চলেছে বাংলাদেশের ফুটবলে! আগামী ৬ সেপ্টেম্বর বঙ্গবন্ধু স্টেডিয়ামে আন্তর্জাতিক প্রীতি ম্যাচ খেলতে নামছে আর্জেন্টিনা-নাইজেরিয়া জাতীয় ফুটবল দল! ঠিকই পড়েছেন। হঠাৎ অপ্রত্যাশিত কিছু ঘটে গেলে ভিন্ন কথা, নইলে মেসিরা ঢাকায় খেলছেন।
আজ বাফুফের জরুরি সভা ডেকেছেন সভাপতি কাজী সালাউদ্দিন। আর্জেন্টিনা-নাইজেরিয়া ম্যাচ আয়োজনের বিষয়টা তিনি নির্বাহী সদস্যদের জানাবেন। আজই গোটা কয়েক বৈঠক আছে তাঁর। সব ঠিক থাকলে আগামীকাল চুক্তি হচ্ছে বিপণন এজেন্ট সেলিব্রেটি গ্রুপের সঙ্গে। এই প্রতিষ্ঠানই আর্জেন্টিনাকে কলকাতায় আনছে। এর আগে ম্যারাডোনাকেও কলকাতায় এনেছিল ওই সংস্থাই।
আগামী ২ সেপ্টেম্বর কলকাতায় ম্যাচ খেলবে আর্জেন্টিনা। কলকাতা থেকে আর্জেন্টিনা ফুটবল দল ঢাকায় আসতে পারে, এই খবর পাওয়া গিয়েছিল আগেই। উদ্যোক্তারা আর্জেন্টিনা-নাইজেরিয়া প্রীতি ম্যাচটা আয়োজনের জন্য বাংলাদেশ ও মালয়েশিয়াকে প্রস্তাব দিয়েছিল। শর্ত ছিল, সুযোগ-সুবিধা যারা বেশি দেবে, ম্যাচটা পাবে তারাই।
একটি বিশ্বস্ত সূত্রের দেওয়া খবর, বাংলাদেশই ম্যাচটা পাচ্ছে। এত দিন বাফুফে দৌড়াচ্ছিল পৃষ্ঠপোষকের পেছনে। আর্জেন্টিনার মতো দল ঢাকায় আনা মানে কোটি কোটি টাকার ব্যাপার। বাংলাদেশের ফুটবলের ভগ্নদশায় কে দেবে অত টাকা? তবু হাল ছাড়েননি সালাউদ্দিন। বাফুফে সভাপতির ঘনিষ্ঠ মহল জানাচ্ছে, তীরে পৌঁছে গিয়েছে তাঁর নেওয়া উদ্যোগ। টাকার একটা ব্যবস্থা হয়ে গেছে।
বিপণন প্রতিষ্ঠান এই ম্যাচের জন্য আনুমানিক ৫০ লাখ ডলার চাইছে। এই টাকার ৬৫ শতাংশ আর্জেন্টিনার, বাকি ৩৫ শতাংশ নাইজেরিয়ার। তবে দর-কষাকষি করে যতটা সম্ভব কমানোর চেষ্টা করছে বাফুফে। টাকার অঙ্ক কমতে পারে। আপাতত এজেন্টকে অগ্রিম ১০ লাখ ডলার দিতে হবে।
চুক্তি অনুযায়ী, পুরো শক্তির আর্জেন্টিনা দলই আসার কথা। টাকার সংস্থান মোটামুটি হয়ে যাওয়ার পর এখন অন্য বিষয়গুলো দেখবে বাফুফে। জানা গেছে, খসড়া চুক্তিতে পুরো আর্জেন্টিনা দল আসবে লেখা থাকলেই মেসির ব্যাপারে সুনির্দিষ্ট কোনো কথা নেই। বাফুফের পক্ষ থেকে ‘মেসিকে থাকতেই হবে’ শর্তটা জুড়ে দেওয়া হবে বলে জানা গেছে একই সূত্রে। সব তারকার উপস্থিতি নিশ্চিত করে তবেই কাল চুক্তি সই করতে যাচ্ছেন বাফুফে সভাপতি। চুক্তি হয়ে গেলে সালাউদ্দিনের সঙ্গে টেলিফোনে আলাপ করিয়ে দেওয়া হবে আর্জেন্টিনা ফুটবল ফেডারেশনের সভাপতি হুলিও গ্রন্দোনার।
এ ব্যাপারে সালাউদ্দিনের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হলে তিনি অপেক্ষা করতে বলে আপাতত শুধু এটুকু বললেন, ‘এই উদ্যোগটা আমরা অনেক আগেই নিয়েছিলাম। এত দিন এর পেছনে অনেক সময় ব্যয় করেছি। এখন একটা পর্যায়ে এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে। বলতে পারেন, আমাদের উদ্যোগের ফলাফল ইতিবাচক।’
জানা গেছে, টিকিট বিক্রি থেকে ১৮-২০ কোটি টাকা আয়ের লক্ষ্য আছে স্থানীয় উদ্যোক্তাদের। বঙ্গবন্ধু স্টেডিয়ামে ১০ হাজার টাকা করে টিকিটের দাম রাখার পরিকল্পনা। এই দামে টিকিট কেনার লোকের অভাব হবে না—উদ্যোক্তাদের সাধারণ ধারণা এমনই। এ ছাড়া টিভি-স্বত্ব থেকে আসতে পারে কয়েক কোটি টাকা। ঢাকায় গোটা দুয়েক অনুশীলন সেশন হতে পারে আর্জেন্টিনার। সেখান থেকেও বড় আয়ের লক্ষ্য আছে। সব মিলিয়ে খরচের ৮০ শতাংশ টাকারই এভাবে তুলে নেওয়ার আশা করছে বাফুফে।
বাকি ৫-৭ কোটি টাকা কিংবা বড় জোর ১০ কোটি টাকাও যদি প্রয়োজন হয়, তাহলে দেশের বড় একটি শিল্পপ্রতিষ্ঠান সেই টাকা দেবে বলে আশ্বস্ত করেছে। ওই আশ্বাস পেয়েই গতকাল থেকে নতুন উদ্যমে নড়েচড়ে বসেছে বাফুফে। সালাউদ্দিনের ঘনিষ্ঠ সূত্র এমনও বলছে, নতুন কোনো সমস্যা দেখা না দিলে লিখে দিতে পারেন আর্জেন্টিনা আসছে।
এখন পর্যন্ত যে খবর, সে অনুযায়ী আর্জেন্টিনা-নাইজেরিয়া দুই দলই একই সঙ্গে ৩ সেপ্টেম্বর আসবে ঢাকায়। যাবে ৭ সেপ্টেম্বর সকালে। দুটি দলের নিরাপত্তাসহ আনুষঙ্গিক বিষয়গুলো নিয়ে সরকারি মহলে কথাবার্তা শুরু হয়ে যাবে দু-এক দিনের মধ্যেই। বাফুফের আশা, ঐতিহাসিক এই ম্যাচের জন্য সরকারি সহযোগিতাও পাওয়া যাবে।

It is a great prospect indeed but still I am not convinced of spending 5000000 dollar. Entertainment value is high but BD foot-ball can't achieve anything from that money.

With the condition of Bangabandhu ground and considering how hard the surface is, I doubt whether players will give even 50% effort. There is every chance to get injured for the players who are not used to play in these kind of surface and no one going to take any chance.

you made a very good point about the hard surface. but i hope that BFF had to go through some screening process before getting selected and quality of the ground might be one of them....

I have a good story to share. Prior to '94 WC, a lot of my friends and I ( the Brazil supporters in the group ) decided we needed a genuine Brazil flag. So, we decided to pack our car and headed to the Brazilian Embassy in Gulshan. You could tell they don't get many visitors. The darwan asked us why we were there and he was a bit startled to see a group of young man jumping out of the car. Upon hearing our request he told us to wait and went inside. After a while, a Brazilian official came out to greet us, took us inside and we sat around a big table while he listened to us patiently. We were dropping names like Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Junior, Eder, Careca etc etc. Then he did the most awesome thing. He told the security to take down the flag from the garden and he GAVE IT TO US with a big smile. We were in disbelief but very proud and thanked him profusely. He told us to root hard for the Celecao, which we did, and Brazil won the cup. That's Brazilians for you ! I bet if you went to the Argentine camp, if they have a post in BD, you would get nothing but jutar bari..
