JOHN MCASLAN + PARTNERS wins international competition for Dhaka metro line
BANGLADESH: Dhaka Mass Transit Co has appointed John McAslan + Partners to design the 16 elevated stations and the depot for metro Line 6.
The architectural practice is working with Nippon Koei, Delhi Metro Rail Corp and Mott MacDonald. It is also undertaking urban integration studies with local architects Development Design Consultants ‘to embed the stations into their immediate and wider urban context’.
The first metro line in the city would run 20·1 km from Uttara North to Motijheel and is to be built in three phases. The foundation stone was laid in October 2013 and completion of all three phases is due by 2022. Ridership is forecast to be 505 000 passengers/day by 2025.

A metro system in Dhaka? I call bull$hit. The chumps back home are too incompetent to get a mega-project like this done.

Metro system in Dhaka sounds like a necessary dream.... It was needed last 30 years, if it didn't happen till now I have my doubts seeing it in my lifetime....
I can tell you right now from day two of buidling the first brick, it will be a homeless shelter :p....
If British were still ruling that place, I think we would have had one... we kicked em out too early i think.... should have waited till they built all these systems..

a mega-project means mega-churi for these politicians and contractors. so they will do all to get this project started or at leash get some cash to flow.
It would be really great for the city though if they do complete it.

about time! If people took the train to go to work, the traffic would not be such a severe problem.

The first time I heard about it during our first democratic govt (BNP 1991-96). Barrister Nazmul Huda was the transportations minister then. It took two decades just to finalize a design. We know how long it will take to build.

The canopies are perforated with a geometric pattern reminiscent of Islamic tile designs that allows sunlight to pass through the tunnel-like structures to illuminate the platforms below. An irregular bowed framework supports the cut-out roof.
White elevator shafts and stairwells connect the station platforms to the ground.
The project, which also includes the design for a train depot, is part of a larger development scheme proposed by the Dhaka Mass Transit Company that aims to address growing traffic congestion and air pollution issues.
"The line will form connections between areas of Dhaka in support of the wider urban strategy of decentralisation of urban activities and population from the centre to satellite communities," said a statement from John McAslan + Partners.
The Dhaka metro line will be completed in three stages with all stations operational by 2022, and is forecast to serve over 500,000 passengers daily by 2025.

Serving only 500,000 passengers in a city of near 20m (by 2025)? Will it really help improve the traffic situation much? The scale of the project has to be augmented. And the attack on traffic congestion has to be multi-pronged and include action such as clearing illegal/poorly planned buildings to make way for new roads, more highways, better management of traffic and enforcement of traffic regulations, better parking facilities, investment in public transport with incentives for people to travel on public transport over private along with other such initiatives.

Consultants for metro rail company appointed (June 2014)
Published: 03:04 june 16, 2014
The government yesterday appointed a joint venture of three Japanese and one Australian companies as consultants for enhancing the organisational capacity of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited under which the much-talked-about metro rail will be constructed.
The cabinet committee on public purchase yesterday approved the Communication Ministry’s proposal for assigning the task to the Oriental Consultant Company, Katahira Engineering International, and Metro Development Company of Japan, and the SMEC of Australia.
After a meeting of the committee, Additional Secretary Nurul Karim told reporters that the firms had been appointed for Tk26.47 crore under package 1.
On January 28, the cabinet committee approved the draft of the metro rail act in order to constitute a company for the operation and management of the metro rail network in the capital, keeping special provision for land accusation.
Under the act, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line 6 will be constructed from Uttara to Bangladesh Bank via Pallabi, Farmgate and Shahbagh with 16 stations on the route.
The construction of the 20km metro rail network from north of Uttara Model Town to Bangladesh Bank at Motijheel was expected to complete by 2019. Residents of Dhaka, world’s ninth densely populated city with 44,000 people living in every square-kilometre area, will be able to travel by metro rail in six years.
An official of the Communication Ministry claims that Dhaka will be free of its terrible traffic jams in six years with the opening of the first 20km metro rail services.
The proposal says the service would drastically reduce the number of private cars on Dhaka roads and thus decrease traffic congestion and environment pollution.
A survey by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) says the metro rail network will save Bangladesh an annual loss of Tk200 billion, equivalent to the country’s 1.5% GDP and 17% of the total tax revenue.
The metro rail will carry an estimated 60,000 passengers an hour to and from Uttara and Motijheel, significantly reducing the travel time from one end to the other to 36 minutes from at least two hours at present, it says.
Jica has provided Tk16,594 crore of the estimated Tk21,985 crore project cost as the government bears the rest.
In November last year, the government appointed a consortium led by Nippon Koei Company as consultant for the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project to complete the project for Tk928.17 crore by 2024.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, who attended the cabinet committee meeting yesterday, told the Dhaka Tribune that the metro rail project had progressed as per the plan and its construction would start in time.
“The appointment of the consultants for the Dhaka Mass Transit Company is another step ahead towards the construction of the metro rail,” he said.

If we consider Rooppur nuclear power plant project as baseline, this project will get completed by 2074
Rooppur project start: 1961
Current schedule: 2021 (plant starts)
That's 60 years!
So, this project will definitely be done by 2074! Strive for wellbeing and longevity, inshallah you will see it open
