Upul Tharanga: Bangladesh helps launch another star !

It is a known fact that several international stars broke into the international limelight in a series with Bangladesh. The latest addition to this list is young Upul Tharanga of Sri Lanka.

This player, who shows every sign of a future Sanath Jayasuriya, has played well for Sri Lankan junior teams and the A team. However, given an opportunity in the recent tri-series with India and the West indies, he failed to impress. The selectors persisted with him for the Bangladeshi tour, which has finally paid off.

Interestingly, the entry of this player into the Sri Lankan ODI squad resulted in his uncle, Saman Jayantha, also a hard-hitting batsman, being dislodged. There will not be too many instances of a nephew edging out his own uncle like this !

When the tsunami hit Sri Lanka on 26th December last year, Upul's house was completely washed away into the sea. His parents were lucky to escape. Upul, who was in Colombo at the time playing Premier League cricket, was forced to live in a small room in the pavilion at the Nodescripts Cricket Club which he represents. Players like Sangakkara lent him a hand to recover from that tragedy at least to some extent. However, that setback did not stop Upul's progress.

With his success in the ODI series with Bangladesh, Upul's career is poised to take off, with a lot of money and sponsorship flowing in. This humble lad from the deep south of Sri Lanka (home to Sanath Jayasuriya too !) deserves every cent of it.

I am sure there will be thousands of Bangladeshis who would watch the progress of this player eagerly, happy that their country has had some part in his fortunes.

it is quite pilfering/pinching comments on us dude. we r here in the international cricket not to make the opponent player rich. I'm not proud to help UPUL like this.
IF it is to help the Tsunami victims, we can do it in other way which our GOV had done fullheartedly.

By droping Upuls catch, give him some few extra life and help him to score his century..........and fourth, all the sponsorship flowing on him......
well i guess no bangladeshi will be ever proud of that .

Anyway, what I meant was not that Bangladesh's weaknesses helped Upul along. It was only a reference to Upul's career taking off during the series with Bangladesh.

I dont want to point anything personal here, your topic "Bangladesh help launch ANOTHER super star" was bit too much on a Bangla cricket forum

Come on man, i can feel our sub continental emotions, but one series against bangladesh in Sri lanka, its too early.

Let him play outside and sustain himself the pressures of international cricket.

Getting a player to the top of the world after one series just gives the player a high head. I am not talking about Tharanga now, we have done this to lotsa other players. This lad shouldnt follow them either.

Plz dont take this post in the other sense that i am against Srilanka or Tharanga, its just that i found the topic bit in-appropriate and had to respond.

Well in another tread there was discussion how bangladesh had helped cricketers start to stardome. Flintoff, Bell (at one point he had over 200 average lol), and others. Without reading that thread it would be hard to understand this thread.
Wish best of luck to Upul Tharanga. He is not as fortunate as some of us are cause he comes from a family who were not financially stable.
