A few dishes I really miss out here in the States:

Shing machher dim, slightly flattened, and fried with some onions (almost "dagani" but not quite). I've tried other catfish roe, but it has nowhere near the same flavour.

Smoked ilish. Probably my only reason for going to the Dhaka Club when I visit.

And, of course, Comillar roshmalai.

Old school Bangladeshi murgi that the murgiwalla used to bring along on a basket on his head -- cooked any way you want (but preferably in a rich coconut milk-containing curry). Ajkalkar farm-er murgi in Bangladesh has nowhere near the same taste, and even the free range chickens in the US lack that distinctive flavour.

And, as long as I am wallowing in food nostalgia, does anyone else remember a soda and burger joint from the late '70s/early '80s called Yum Yum (in Dhanmondi)? It made burgers with these patties that would melt in your mouth like butter.

catfish egg is yukky...plastic plastic and it does not come close to shing macher dim, IMO. the closest one I would say is Perch's egg if you can catch few here in the states during spawning season.

When I left BD in '01, the price of gorur mansho was Tk 80. Now, the last time I heard, it's Tk. 250.

Although I meant the 45 taka bit as a joke, it's clearly gonna be at least Tk. 25/30

i can just about remember yum yum although my memories would be distinctly from the early to middle of 80s. i have no recollection of where yum yum was but had been there a few times.

since you mentioned dhaka club i must mention the fish fingers. it's nothing like the british variety, not that i have had any since the early nineties. my parents used to take my sister and i to the swimming pool there each saturday morning in the early eighties. after five years i never learnt to swim! the water was so cold in the covered pool. saturday mornings used to be a chore but the fishfingers were always something to look forward to afterwards

foods near the sea always have to be related to fish! hehe... will never forget the taste and touch of that humongous lobster that I had during my one and only visit to Cox's Bazaar!

back in the days, there were 2 options for us to have tehari after school...

1. Go to Shaad tehari ghor (not owned by our Shaad bhai)
2. Go to nilkhet or any other "jhupri" dokan and have tehari...

The clear choice was always jhupri dokans. First, it would cost only 10 to 15 taka compared to 50 taka at Shaad...and second, it's 1000 times dirtier...and hence, 1000 times tastier

Well I had a kacchi at Shad this afternoon. They have modernized the place in the last year. Much cleaner, roomier and neater inside. Probably hired an interior designer. Also with AC now. Has become a nice little spot for school/college/uni couples around here.

Jhupri dokans are not bad, but the experience in the toilet afterwards is. The ones at the corner of tirish number are doing good business.

Nilkhet is just bad. But the ones in Sadarghat are really good.

Good to know. But if my memory is serving me right, they had an AC since back then...'98ish or may be 2000.

No thanks, I already eat a lot of junk on the road. Chotpoti, fuchka, jhalmuri, chanachur, amra, peyara, am, kola, cake, pan, biri, cigarette, singara, samosa, pastry, patties, chop, chap, icecream, siddho dim, lal cha, dudh cha, coffee, potato chips, badam, bhutta, coke, sandwich, lassi, amer shorbot, beler shorbot, sondesh, rosogolla, ice cream, etc.
