Asia Cup 2008 Fixtures
Asia Cup 2008
India and Pakistan grouped together in Asia Cup
India and Pakistan have been placed in the same group for this year's Asia Cup, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) have announced.
The tournament - the ninth to be held - will be staged in Pakistan in June and July, and all teams have confirmed their availability and satisfaction of touring the country, in spite of the recent political upheaval. Two weeks ago Australia, after much deliberation, decided to postpone their scheduled tour of Pakistan later this month owing to security concerns.
"All the participating nations have confirmed their participation and we hope to have a safe and highly competitive Asia Cup in three months' time," Ashraful Huq, the ACC chief executive, told reporters at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore. "Australians are unaware of our culture and they don't have an idea that no sporting activity has ever been hurt in Asia. All the teams are going to take part barring any major disaster."
The three sides in each group play each other once, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the second phase, where they will again play each other once.
"Karachi will host ten of the thirteen matches, while Lahore will host three and since the event is played in the summer season all matches will be day-night, starting late in the afternoon," Huq said.
"I have always felt that this was one of the most important tournaments," Arjuna Ranatanga, the ACC chairman, added. "I am delighted to see Pakistan hosting it and everyone has agreed to send their best teams for it.
"The PCB has been like an elder brother to Sri Lanka and always helped us out."
The first Asia Cup was held in 1984 in the UAE and India have won the event four times, while Sri Lanka have lifted the Cup three times and Pakistan once.

6 matches. The trick is to win the 1st, and then 4, 5, 6 in a row.

5 games, 6th if we make it to the final. Pretty good deal for us. We gotta keep our cool against UAE. We find a way to embarass ourselves in big tournaments against minnows. Winning the first match would also give us a better edge as a win always gets the blood pumping. WATCH OUT SRI LANKA.
We can also thank Australia for cancelling their tour of Pakistan. Gives us a chance to get some match practice in the host country.

" India beating Australia is very good for cricket in Asia and will encourage nations like Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, China and Afghanistan," Huq, a former secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, told AFP. "I watched both the finals in Australia and was amazed how the young Indian team paid the Australians back, both on and off the field."
Look what our Ashraful Huq saying.
He became a chamsa of India. He's grouping us with China & Afghanista?? What a freak.
If our own man downplay our position like this, then how can we stop others?
Shame on you Ashraf. You go to hell man.

Murad bhai, take it a bit easy please.
There is nothing wrong in praising India's effort against the Aussies in Australia.
They certainly deserves that accolade, whether you like it or not.
They have beaten Australia 2-0, fair and square.
As the chief of ACC, you dont really expect him to be siding Australia, do you?
Also, like it or not, we are still an upcoming and emerging nation of cricket.
The way he meant it, as far as i get, India's performance against the Aussies would encourage us. Our good performance against Ind,Pak et all would encourage the even more newcomers like China and Afghanistan.
Its bridging the gap.
Australia is (still) a class of their own. The rest 7 teams only tried to come up to thier standard.
The same goes for Bangladesh. We set the standard for those associates.
We bridge the gap between the top 8 and the associate nations.
.... As for as the actual grouping in the tournament goes, Ind/Pak in the same group makes sense.
Their match draws the most crowd in the subcontinent and an ideal final for the sponsors is always Ind-Pak final.
...... but little do they know about our plans....

I think thats a really good point. We will be in Pakistan for almost a month before the Asia Cup which will give us some practise against Pakistan and also give our players an opportunity to get used to the playing conditions. Therefore I wouldn't be surprised if they surprised a few teams in this tournament. GO BANGLADESH !

Two trips to Pakistan in 2 months... we sure are in high-demand list of PCB ... WAIT : We play on consecutive days, something that no other teams do in the first round! Upto you to decide whether thats a good thing or not.

BD playing against SL is not good, the lankans know all the weakness of the BD team, and they have bowled them out for less than 100 runs on many occasions. Lets hope that BD improves quite a bit in their batting by that time. We are seeing a bit of batting improvement under Siddons, they need to improve bowling and fielding.
