Default BCB looking for a CEO

Lobbying on for BCB CEO

http://www.newagebd.com/2009/aug/31/spt.html

The aspiring candidates have started hectic lobbying to become the new chief executive officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, a position lying vacant for nearly one-and-a-half years.

Sources within the BCB said that the organisation has received over 60 applications for the post since it floated an advertisement on June 29. The applicants also include Mahmudur Rahman, the last CEO of the BCB.

Other applicants include former national skipper Roquibul Hassan, Intekhab Mahmud, former chief communication officer of Citycell, Mainul Haque Chowdhury, a senior official of Nestle Bangladesh Limited, and Rizwan Bin Farouq, the executive director of Exiom Technologies limited.

Col (retd) AKM Zakir, the venue administrator of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, is also one of the candidates for the posts. Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, the acting CEO of the BCB, however, did not apply.

This is the second time that the BCB has advertised for the key executive post since Mahmudur Rahman departed in February 2008. At that time the BCB had received 29 applications and short-listed three candidates.

The short-listed candidates were former cricketer and chief selector Mainul Haque, former CEO of Brunei Cricket Association Manjur Ahmed and former cricketer Tariquzzaman Munir.

The BCB could not select one from the trio due to a strong lobbying for all of them. It also compelled the Board to postpone the appointment process for quite sometime. Their applications, however, still remained valid and thus they will be also interviewed along with the new applicants, said a senior BCB official.

To avoid any controversy the BCB recently handed the responsibility of the all-crucial recruitment to the Institute of Business Administration of the Dhaka University, which is doing the job for a certain fee.

Naturally the institute also has been asked to make a short-list for the CEO post. The BCB officials said they are expecting to receive the list within a day or two.

Meanwhile, the BCB confirmed the appointment of former cricketer Ali Ahsan Babu as the new host event director for the World Cup 2011. The BCB was in a hurry to make this appointment as they have to inform about the decision at the event’s central organising committee meeting in Mumbai on September 2.

Jalal Yunus, chairman of the BCB’s media committee, said the appointment of Babu was all but confirmed when they had formed the local organising committee last month. But they had to wait for making an official announcement as Babu needed clearance from his current employer Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

Babu was a unanimous choice for the post of CEO in 1999, but he could not take up the job as Biman refused to release him. Yunus said Babu faced virtually no competition this time also.

‘At times we also thought about Roquibul Hasan as he was the host event director during the Under-19 World Cup in 2004. But we were not sure about his interest this time,’ said the Yunus.

But he wasn't short-listed. Just an applicant.

That's a good move by BCB that they have given the responsibility to IBA to make the short list.
