The word dāl derives from the Sanskrit verbal root dal- 'to split'
In Italy, eating lentils on New Year's Eve traditionally symbolizes the wish to earn more money next year, most likely because of their round coin-like shape.
A National Lentil Festival takes place in Palouse region in USA annually
According to one parliament of Vietnam, Tan and Lang were twin brothers. The marriage of Tan was solemnised. He loved his wife the most but wife turned infidel. In liu of her husband she got entangled with her husband’s brother Lang. Tan became awfully sad when he came to know of this and decided that his living was no more worthwhile. With this thought in his mind, he left his home, went to an isolated place near a river and committed suicide.
When Lang found his brother missing, he set out to search his brother and after much of wandering about, reached near the river where Tan had committed suicide. Lang found the dead body of his brother. Holding himself responsible for his brother’s death, Lang began to fling his head against a stone crying all the while. He too died at last.
When at their home front Tan’s wife saw both the brothers disappearing one after the other, she started worrying. She too set out to find them out. And she did find them out indeed- both dead near the river. She was terribly shocked and she also sacrificed her life then and there.
Within a matter of a couple of days, the Tan’s dead body turned into a thin plant, dead Lang’s body turned into a rock, and tan’s wife turned into a climber wrapping around both the brothers with leaves coming off the plant. According to adages that went by, in due course of times, they turned into betel nut, lime and betel. Thus these three items were born on earth.
The Invention Of The Hurricaine Lamp
In 1780, Francois-Pierre Aime Argand, the son of a Swiss watchmaker, was struck with a bright new idea. He invented an oil lamp with a glass chimney and a control nob. Aime Argand was a scientist with a particular interest in Chemistry, and he realized that a cylindrical wick which allowed air to flow both through and around itself would produce a brighter light. The glass lamp chimney protected the flame from gusts and the control nob enabled the lamp user to adjust the height of the wick, offering further control over the strength of light produced. Whale oil or olive oil was typically used as the fuel for the new lamp. Aime Argand was a man of his times – a scholar of the period we call The Enlightenment – in which science was being explored for the benefit of mankind and in inventing the prototype Hurricane Lamp, Aime Argand would illuminate the world for centuries to come.
Hurricane Lamps On Ships
Piracy, sea battles, royal navies and transatlantic voyages were part and parcel of life in the 18th and 19th centuries and mariners quickly adapted the wind-resistant hurricane lamp for use on their vessels. Hanging hurricane lamps and wall hurricane lamps, often lantern-like in shape, became necessary equipment for ships and in addition to lighting cabins and decks, they were used to send signals from ship to ship.

Lota (Urdu: لوٹا, Hindi: लोटा) a small, usually spherical water vessel of brass or copper or plastic used in parts of South Asia.[1] The name is from Urdu and Hindi.
A lota is commonly used to store or transfer small amounts of liquids like milk or water, but also particularly for cleaning and ritual purification.
Cleansing
In the Indian subcontinent, the lota is employed to cleanse oneself after defecation.[2] In parts of Bangladesh the term "bodna" (or "badna") describes spouted (teapot-like) lota vessels specifically limited to toilet use. People of the desi diaspora may use watering cans, empty bottles or cups for this purpose, but still refer to these as lota.
In Islam the wudu and ghusl ritual purification, require water, for which a lota is commonly used.
Offerings
It is also used in religious activities, like Hindu puja,When used for Hindu worship, it is often decorated with sindoor and/or turmeric powder, kalaawa.
A Neti Lota, a specially designed pot for nasal irrigation, is also used in the practice of Hatha Yoga, aiding in the practice of Pranayama, Asana and Meditation.[citation needed] Its use to clear the sinuses is believed to prevent respiratory disease, reduce post-nasal drip, and normalize the pressure of the inner ear.[3]
