about dav whatmore's coaching, i'm sure he has breaking points as well. Maybe these BD cricketers are just uncoachable. If you bring subcontinental coaches, there is no discipline, so if you are thinking of firing Dav, not sure how we can do better. It's not like he doesn't respect the players and vice versa, the players just have a steep learning curve.

everyone agrees the domestic league is the biggest problem. why not more focus on that issue. all the ex-captains were talking about it in recent interviews. rather than trying to make comoebacks, these guys should be out there advocating for a healthy domestic infrastructure again. If there is a will, there is a way. In Bangladesh, there is not much will.

'Statistical Highlights'

Mark Benson made his debut as a test umpire and Alan Hurst as a match referee. For Darryl Harper this was the 44th test and the 5th featuring Bangladesh but the first in Bangladesh.

Nafees Iqbal became the 38th player to represent Bangladesh.

Habibul Bashar, who was the only player to appear in all of Bangladesh's 30 tests, missed a match for the first time. The record for this is held by Alistair Campbell who played in the first 56 matches of Zimbabwe. Bashar comes fourth in the list after Campbell, Andy Flower (52) and Imtiaz Ahmed (Pakistan, 39). Grant Flower also played in the first 30 matches for Zimbabwe.

The records for each country are

Australia Jack Blackham 17
England Tom Emmett and George Ulyett 3
South Africa WH Milton, Cyril Vincent 3
West Indies Cliff Roach 16
New Zealand Milford Page 14
India Amar Singh, CK Nayudu, Wazir Ali 7
Paksitan Imtiaz Ahmed 39
SL Ranjan Madugalle 18
Zim Alistair Campbell 56
Bangladesh Habibul Bashar 30

Hannan Sarkar was out for a duck for the third straight test match. He was also dismissed off the first ball in the two tests in West Indies in 2004. He became only the second opener to score ducks in three or more consecutive tests. Pankaj Roy scored ducks in all the four tests for India against England in 1952, but his first two ducks were scored in the second innings.

Bangladesh lost its first three wickets for five runs. This was their worst start, bettering the 11 for 3 against Zimbabwe at Dhaka in 2001-02

Nafees Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful added 115 for the third wicket. This is the 14th century stand for Bangladesh but only the third which did not involve Habibul Bashar.

Khaled Mashud led Bangladesh for the 11th time. Bangladesh lost all the matches that he captained. Only Ian Botham has captained his country on more occasions (12) without winning a test match.

Bangladesh scored 165/6 on the first day. The last time Bangladesh was all out on the first day of a test match was against Australia at Darwin in 2003. Since then they batted first in 9 matches.

Mohammad Ashraful hit Wiseman for a six to move from 46 to 52. This was the second time that he reached his fifty with a six. He had done the same against Ray Price of Zimbabwe at Harare in 2003/04. He is the Bangladeshi batsman to do so.

The six that Rajin Saleh hit off Wiseman in the first innings was the 50th for Bangladesh in test cricket.

Early on the second day, James Franklin took a hattrick dismissing Manjural Islam Rana, Mohammad Rafique and Tapash Baisya off consecutive balls. He is the second NZ bowler to take a hattrick. This is the second hattrick recorded against Bangladesh after Andy Blignaut at Harare in 2003/04.

When he had Jacob Oram caught by Rana at first slip, Mohammad Rafique became the first Bangladeshi player to take 50 wickets in test matches.

Rafique's 6 for 122 was the fourth time that he took 5 wickets in an innings. Rafique bowled 59.1 overs for his wickets, which is more than the previous best of 57 that Rafique himself bowled at Harare in 2003.

In the second innings, Daniel Vettori took 6 for 28. This is his first 5 wicket haul in three years and 22 tests. In those 21 test matches, he took 39 wickets at an average of 54.58. Vettori also took his second 10 WM.

Nafis Iqbal was the top scorer in the second innings. Nafis is the 8th player to topscore for Bangladesh on Test debut. The other seven are :

In both innings :

Mohammad Ashraful 26 (out of 90) and 114 (328), v SL, Colombo, 2001-02

In the first innings :

Aminul Islam 145 (400) v India, Dhaka 2000-01
Hannan Sarkar 55 (161) v SL, Colombo, 2001-02
Tapash Baisya 52* (164) v SL, Colombo, 2002

In the second innings :

Fahim Muntasir 33 (152), v Pakistan, Dhaka, 2001-02
Habibul Bashar 30(91), v India, Dhaka, 2000-01
Javed Omar 85* (168), v Zim, Bulawayo, 2000-01

New Zealand's 402 was their highest score against Bangladesh in three test matches. This is also the first time that Bangladesh managed to bowl NZ out.

Brendon McCullum won his first MOM award after 8 tests and 54 one dayers.
