Default LIVE and EXCLUSIVE Discussion with National Strength and Conditioning CoachGrant Luden

We have yet another treat for you. National Fitness Trainer, our strength and conditioning coach, Grant Luden has also agreed to join BC and answer fan questions.

Our admonishments to you are the same ones we made when Coaches Ian Pont and Julien Fountain joined us.

Do respect their time and privacy. It is our privilege that they have decided to spend some valuable time with us. Let us not abuse this gesture.

Grant Luden is a South African who has extensive experience as a cricket coach, trainer and fitness advisor. He had been head coach and manager at the Tshwane University of Technology in South Africa.

He has a degree in sport and exercise technology and completed a national diploma in sport and exercise technology from Technikon Pretoria. He has also worked as a fitness trainer of the Karnataka Cricket Academy in 2005, and has been a coach and fitness specialist for 17 years.

Welcome to BC and thank you for giving us your precious time. How are our boys compared to the rugby boys in England, SA, NZ or Aus? Strength, Stamina, Speed, Agility etc.

Do we have athletes in our team? Who in your opinion, pound for pound the best.

You have been with Bangladesh for quite a while now, you have seen them through thick and thin, how has your time been with the tigers?

I am interested to know:

1. If we scale the required fitness level of cricketers from 1 to 10, how Bangladesh will stand as a team (overall fitness level of Bangladesh)?
2. What Bangladesh will rank (fitness wise) among the participating teams in WC?
3. Would you please name few 'most' improved players considering fitness?

Hi Grant,

Great to have you with us. I was wondering if you look at bowlers and batsmen differently under your training. For example, are batsmen asked to perform more upper body exercises, and bowlers more cardio? Or is the focus more on getting all the players an all-round workout?

Also, are there any exercises that you feel every athlete, regardless of sport, should do?

A Boys High ex-student here!

Anyways my questions:

1. Who can bench press more?
2. Who got six packs?
3. Who got the strongest calves?
4. Who can give more pushup or always win arm wrestling?

Does cricket require different training regimens for different types of players? i.e is there a difference between the work outs you assign a specialist pace bowler vs a specialist spinner?

How about a difference between a specialist pacer and a specialist batsman? How about spinning all rounder vs pace all rounder?

And to echo Zeeshan above, who benches the most, and how much can he bench? My guess is Tamim or Rubel leads the way.

Hello Mr. Luden,

1) can you elaborate on the national cricket teams workout routine...

2) How many workout days? Is the training comparable with any other sport such as American football, Baseball?

3) Who can squat and Dead-lift more?

4) How does the Bangladeshi training facilities compare with those of the western world?

5) Also, do they take whey protein powder? (or other proper nutrition)? because many players seem very skinny.

- are you doing anything to get some muscle mass for shafiul - he seems too skinny for a fast bowler.

1) For a right handed batsman, which major muscle group should he focus on?
2) Also, for a leg spinner, which muscle group should be the main focus?
3) What is the cardio routine for our National players? Does it consist of mainly Interval training?

Hi Grant,

Q. Bangladeshi athletes often struggle with Stamina. It has been seen that after running for 20-30 odd runs, batsmen seem to be out of breath. This is one of the reasons why they get out mid 30s-40s hitting 4s/6s only to avoid running. What is your take on this issue ? how do you approach to resolve this problem ? thanks.

Hi Grant,

Welcome to BC. I read an anecdote of Chaminda Vaas that he spent off-season building up muscle, doing heavy lifting, going on protein diet, etc. And then during season he focused on tone and cardio. Do you subscribe to such a regimen for our players?

* What is your best moment working for Bangladesh cricket?
* Breakfast is an important part of fitness.. Talking about our traditional breakfast they are not that healthy. Do our cricketer still eating those bangla breakfast or how they adopt themselves with breakfast like cereals, oats, wholemeal breads etc?

* have you ever tried our bangla breakfast?
off topic- I saw your pics in FB and I can tell you enjoying your visit in Bangladesh. specially the picture you wearing lungi was really funny.

Who in out bowling department has the best Stamina? (fast bowling, and spin bowling)?
What is the average amount of excercise a player must get in order to be a international cricketer?
And who is the fittest batsmen?

Shakib if he bats for some time and score a 50 he looks like all drained with minimum energy left..do u think all of our players have this fittness problem?..if so how can we overcome this?
