Slow starts in CT

Slow start ending up with high totals. Fast start ending up with low totals. What do you make of this?


Game 1:
BD 36/0 after 10 overs. Ended up with 300+
Eng 51/1 after 10 overs. Ended up with 300+

Game 2:
NZ 67/1 after 9.3 overs before rain interrupt. Ended up with 290+
Aus 53/3 after 9 overs no play after that

Game 3:
SA 32/0 after 10 overs. Ended up with 290+
SL 87/1 after 10 overs. Ended up with 200+.

Game 4:
Ind 46/0 after 10 overs. So far following the trait.

Always assistance for bowler's early on. Moisture in the pitch. Evaporation taking place.


I would never open the bowling with the spinner, bowling first.

In addition, these are 9:30AM local time starts.

The sun would not play a prominent part in doing its job as the evaporator at that time, so the batsmen have to be doubly careful and watchful.

Contrast this with the start time in the sub-continent that is considered a norm now, say 1:30-2:30PM...these wickets would have already been exposed to the full rays of the sun, coming at an angle that is almost perpendicular to the wicket.

Also, it's not even summer in the UK, wait until it gets its sunlight for a longer prolonged time and then batsmen batting first would notice the difference in the wicket to take the risk...case in point, England's world record score of 444 last summer.

SL did not lose wickets due to initial acceleration but inexperience and lack of depth in their batting. Apart from them, all the batting line ups started slow and went on to make it big.

Our start looked especially defensive with Tamim leaving balls and just blocking. Later her said it was a two paced pitch.

Now it seems all teams are doing the same thing. No one could have known other teams would follow the same approach.

If Tamim, who eventually went on to make 128 against a good England attack in England, says that the pitch was two-paced at the start and that's why they needed to play cautiously, then people should take his words at face value. These clueless non-Asian commentators, who only seem to know their own players and no-one else, should try to figure out why the opening batsmen are playing cautiously, rather than criticize the slow start. You freaking morons, you are paid experts, use your cricketing expertise to impart some god-damn cricketing knowledge. 1999 WC in England, we saw a similar pattern. For Eg: Pakistan had Test batsman Wajahtullah Wasti opening throughout the tournament-his role to see out the new ball.

Only difference this time though, teams end up scoring 300 plus with no sweat. Those days you could defend a 200 ish score with good bowling.
