Thumbs down BPL hit by spot-fixing approach

Quote:
The Bangladesh Premier League has taken a hit before the tournament has even begun after Mashrafe Mortaza claimed that he had received an approach from a fellow cricketer regarding potential spot-fixing.

Mashrafe was quoted in Bangladeshi newspapers on Thursday morning as saying that he had reported the approach to his franchise, the Dhaka Gladiators, who have in turn alerted the league organisers.

The allrounder, who is to captain the Dhaka Gladiators in the Twenty20 competition, said he would stand down if he suspected any malpractice by his players once the action begins.

Reports claimed that Mashrafe was asked to provide information to bookmakers about when he would be playing, and even whether he would be wearing his cap or sunglasses, in return for 15-20% of the profits.

League secretary Mohammad Alamgir said on Thursday that he had only learned of the approach via the media.

"We have found out after reading the newspaper reports. I don't understand why he went to the press first before telling us. There's a proper process for all this," Alamgir was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"If he had reported it to us, we would have started investigation right away. But even now, we will talk to Mashrafe and take his official statement."

Alamgir said that an officer from the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit was in Dhaka for the tournament, and that the matter would be investigated.

"The protocol is for the player to report to the BPL governing council or for the franchise owners to report to BPL," he said. "None of them have done that before the news was published in the media. I will also tell our ACSU officer about the incident and we'll conduct whatever that is necessary in this situation."

The BPL, which involves six franchises, is due to begin on Thursday with an opening ceremony before the first matches take place on Friday in Dhaka.

The money-spinning Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 is set to kick off today at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, but it was the spot-fixing allegation that hogged all the spotlight yesterday, even dwarfing the much hyped opening ceremony.

Pace spearhead Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, the captain of the Dhaka Gladiators, has told two Bengali newspapers on Wednesday that a former national cricketer approached him with a spot-fixing offer in the lead-up to the BPL, the new venture of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The reports said Mashrafe was asked to provide information on whether he would play certain matches and even whether he'd be wearing his sunglasses or cap. In exchange, he was told, he would be paid 15-20 per cent of the earnings from the spot-betting.

When contacted, Mashrafe said: "I don't want to talk about it again. I have told the team management and I am sure they will take the right steps in this regard. From what I've heard, the newspapers have reported it correctly. I haven't seen them but it was said that a player from Biman made the offer. I will stick with it. Please, I don't want to talk about this anymore."

The pace bowler has also threatened to pull out of the team's captaincy if he found anything wrong in his team during the tournament.

His disclosure was a talking point of the day.

"We learnt about it and asked the concerned authorities to investigate the allegations. It can happen and that's why we asked all the franchises to appoint a security official to make sure the players are aware of the consequences of this kind of crime," said Gazi Ashraf Hossain, chairman of the BPL governing council.

He also informed that an International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) officer was already in Dhaka for the BPL and would be made aware of this new information. "We will definitely take all necessary action in this regard," he added.

"This is a very serious offence," said BCB spokesman Jalal Yunus.

"We have zero tolerance for these things and will do whatever is needed to nail it down quickly," said the board's media committee chairman, adding that Mashrafe had been asked to reveal the name of the player who made the approach.

Mashrafe is likely to speak to officials of ACSU in a couple of days.

Why?? We discuss everything here. If anything we should applaud Mash for coming out with it right away on the eve of the tournament rather than waiting for the tournament to be over.

May be rename the thread. Very much misleading!!

Because a BPL player was only approached. There wasn't any spot-fixing done, nothing proven. The title seems to indicate that Spot-fixing has already happened in BPL. Big difference.

Exactly. Thanks for clarifying. And based on the post that I wrote the above comment to remove the thread has already been deleted(that was post# 2)...I think that post was written by mufi_02.

Secondly, when BPL has been roaring, this minor approach which is negligible (but in this thread it is written with malapproprism - specially the threat title) puts a negative impact on the League/fans, in my opinion.

When I hear ex cricketer, two names pop up in my head. But that's where it should remain, cuz I can't accuse anyone of wrongdoing without a proof.

Mash - well done on resisting, but not so well done with not following the proper channels. And seeing as how he broke protocol, he should have named the person in question in public too....

You are reading this wrong. Those three ex-players were present there that was being said. Not involved.
