Twenty20 World Cup fixtures announced

The full fixture list for the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup has been annouced and host South Africa will take on the West Indies in the opening game at the Wanderers.

On Wednesday September 12th, a day after the opening match, the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban will host the first double-header of the Championship when New Zealand and Kenya square-up in the morning fixture. Following the conclusion of that match Pakistan and Scotland will play each other at 14h00. Later that night Australia takes on Zimbabwe at Newlands in Cape Town.

Once the group stage is completed the two top teams from each group will go through to the Super 8's which start on Sunday, September 16th. The top four teams after the Super 8's will go through the the semi finals on Saturday, September 22nd.

The Final of the Twenty20 World Cup will be played at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Heritage Day, Monday, September 23rd 2007.

In announcing the fixtures, Steve Elworthy, Tournament Director of the Twenty20 World Cup, said: “The finalisation of the fixtures programme for this inaugural ICC Twenty/20 World Championship 2007 is a result of a successful process of consultation between the International Cricket Council, Cricket South Africa and the host stadiums.

“We are certainly pleased with the materialisation of this important development, as this means that the Local Organising Committee can now channel more of its energy on other awaiting programmes of action.

“Further, the fixtures programme has also been designed in a way that; even though there is going to be more than one game being played on each day, none of those games have been scheduled at the same time and it, therefore, becomes possible for viewers and spectators to watch all the games as the start times do not clash.”

Warm-up matches are slated for Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th, normally this is to allow the teams to acclimatise to the local conditions but for most nations these warm up games will be their only taste of Twenty20 cricket this year.

For England and India their preparations for the tournament will be far from ideal as they have to play the final game of the Natwest Series on Saturday, September 8th at Lords before heading to South Africa the next day missing their only opportunity to play any part in the warm up games.

It was the third Test ground in Johannesburg following the Old Wanderers Stadium and Ellis Park. For more than 74 years, it has provided the focal point of Johannesburg's sporting aspirations.

Kingsmead - Durban

Kingsmead is located in humid Durban, home to sandy beaches and surfing. The ground has played host to tests since January 1923 when England and South Africa played to out a draw. Highlights in the history of Kingsmead include South Africa's innings and 129-run demolition of Australia, in Feb 70.

Newlands - Cape Town

Newlands, home of Western Province Cricket, has been described by many, together with the Adelaide Oval in Australia, as one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the World. Nestled at the foot of Table Mountain it is one of the most picturesque places in the world to watch cricket.

Gerald Majola, the chief executive of Cricket South Africa, entered into the revolutionary spirit of 20/20 cricket on Tuesday when he announced low-cost ticket prices for the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa in September and sniped at the ICC's handling of previous tournaments.

"We have to ensure every person is able to enjoy the event and that the stadia are full," Majola said on Tuesday at the unveiling of the tournament logo and the cheap ticket prices, even by South African standards.

"We looked at the previous two ICC tournaments and, in my opinion, they were not successful. So we have looked at those pitfalls and will take care of those in South Africa," he added.

And Majola and tournament director Steve Elworthy are being true to their word.The cheapest tickets for the 14-day championship starting on September 11 cost just R20 [£1.40] for those happy to sit on the grass banks during the group stage of matches.

Grandstand seats cost R40 [£2.80], while the prices go up to R40 [£2.80] and R80 [£5.60] respectively for the Super Eights stage.The tariffs for the opening game (SA v WI) and ceremony, semifinals and final are R100 [£7] and R160 [£11.20] respectively.

And if fans want to attend one of the five double-header days - two matches in one day at the same stadium - they won't pay through the nose either. For group stage double-headers the ticket prices are R40 [£2.80] and R80 [£5.60] and R60 [£4.20] and R120 [£8.40].

"The pricing of tickets will be fundamental to our success," Elworthy said. "So it was a major challenge getting the blend of pricing right to ensure we filled each stadium nine times in 14 days, because there are 27 games split amongst three venues. So the tickets are very competitively priced to ensure there is no barrier to entry."

The tournament logo, designed by Minardi Brice, features a de-constructed graphic of crashing wickets and a ball rebounding from them and, according to Elworthy, "directly targets the youth, but also captures the format's vibrant energy and the strength in diversity South Africa is known to stand for globally".

"We believe 20/20 was born in South Africa so it is only fair that the first world championship is held here," Majola said.

"We pride ourselves in South Africa that we host the best events here and we have to make sure we keep that tradition," he said, referring to the 2003 World Cup and the Women's World Cup held in 2005.

"We understand what Pro20 has done for cricket in South Africa. We wanted to make cricket a truly national game, accessible to all. Pro20 has been the vehicle we've used to take cricket to the masses," Majola said.

Elworthy announced that ODI champions Australia would be the first team to arrive in South Africa, on September 3. All the competing nations, barring India and England, have requested warm-up games, which would be held in Benoni, Centurion and Potchefstroom on September 8 and 9. India and England will be busy finishing up their series in England that weekend.

"It's going to be non-stop cricket action," Elworthy promised.

22,000 ICC World Twenty20 tickets sold on day one

An amazing 22 200 tickets had been sold by 17h00, on the first day of ticket sales, for the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 South Africa 2007(T20). At lunch time (12h00), nine thousand tickets had already been grabbed.

This brings the total number of tickets sold to date, including preferential bookings, to 45 000.

The young, talented Bangladeshi side shone on the world stage at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 with stunning victories over India and South Africa. It will be looking to have a similar impact at the ICC World Twenty20.

But it will face one of the toughest groups at the event, having to take on host nation South African and the West Indies who were ICC Champions Trophy 2006 runners-up, in the opening stage.

Although there were some inconsistent performances in the Caribbean, most notably in its defeat to Ireland in the Super Eight stage, there were plenty of positives to take from the event with a number of players establishing themselves as household names.

Captain Mohammad Ashraful’s masterful 87 against South Africa was one of the innings of the tournament at the CWC 2007, while Tamim Iqbal’s 51 against India at almost run-a-ball illustrated his potential to have an impact on cricket’s biggest stage.

While Bangladesh rely on its spin bowlers, which will force the batsmen to generate their own pace off the ball in Twenty20 cricket, the pace of Mashrafe Mortaza will undoubtedly cause problems for even the best of batsmen.

An outstanding fielding side, Ashraful’s men will also be one of the teams to watch in terms of athleticism, which will help heap pressure on opposing batsmen which is vital in such a short form of the game.

Bangladesh’s only experience of Twenty20 cricket at international level, prior to the CWC 2007, was a defeat of Zimbabwe in November 2006.

And while Bangladesh may be inexperienced at this level and in the Twenty20 format the fact they have tasted victory over some of world cricket’s super powers in ODI cricket, both at the CWC 2007 and in its famous victory over Australia at Cardiff in 2005, means it will be a team to watch closely at this event.
