We are playing a defensive side for sure. 3 bowlers and then Shak for the fourth bowler plus Riyadh and Naeem to chip in overs. Naeem better spend at least 2 hours at the crease for him to have justified his selection.

That's more moronic than defensive... Adding another specialist bowler (Sunny) would still be defensive .. But that's some how acceptable.

After a year of no show from SN, I think he did not deserve to be in the team...

India usually go with Ishant, Zaheer, Yadav and Ashwin. England goes with Broad, Swann, Anderson and Bresnan. So it's not uncommon to play with 4 full time bowlers. Since Shakib is basically a full time bowler, that's why we're seeing the team management batting up to 8 and then the rest are filled with full timers. I don't mind that but I feel we should not overwork Shakib the way we have. Let him focus more on his batting while Sohag and Elias bowl the bulk of the bowling.

The way I see it, if 7 batsman can't get the job done I doubt one extra batsman will make all that much of a difference. Plus when we are talking about Aus, SA, Eng you can expect all four of their bowlers to deliver. Tha'ts not the case with our bowlers. Also if we play Sohag and Sunny, we are still playing with 8 batsman.

Then how many bowlers do you want? I still think 4 specialist bowlers is the way to go. Riyad is a good enough spinner in the longer format as far as our standard goes and is very much capable as a 5th bowler. Now, if you take both Sunny/Gazi, then we have 6 bowlers without Naeem and Nasir. That's just way too many.

In Tests, a bowler has to be patient. Its not ODI or T20, where you contain the batsmen and keep rotating bowlers. In Tests, you have to let your slow bowler bowl for long spells and have close-in fielders and wait for the edges. In that case, they have to maintain a very accurate line and length. The pacers has to bowl at the fifth stump on a consistent basis. The odd outswinger will have the edge and inswinger will have LBWs. That's why 4 is good and you can have Riyad bowl when sessions are about to end.

Gazi should be in the team, he can also bat somewhat. Playing a batsman at no 8 like Riyadh/Nasir can't bring any good. We have to get out of this defensive mentality by overloading the team with batsman and besides it's too much workload for Shakib.

Where do you see 6/7 bowlers? this is not ODI, a bowler is who can take wickets, containing bowlers are basically batsmen and bowls fillers in test cricket. Specialist bowlers means, their main job is bowling for taking wickets...Shakib is an all rounder and you should use him with some balance, so you have 3 specialist bowlers if you drop sunny.

You expect your main 4 bowlers to do the majority bowling and take the majority wickets and also ensure adequate rests for them to be effective...that's when the part timers comes in...5/6 part time bowlers. If we have Shakib in 5 bowlers, then you don't need Mullah/Nasir/SN ---- at least one of them you can safely drop...then you have a balance between batting and bowling.....

Mullah, Nasir, Nayeem etc will be able to chip in a few overs ...to give the main bowlers a bit rest and thats a happy hour for batsmen, you can't expect much from them. If they bowl too long (Which they will, if you take only three specialist bowlers), opponents will chip in with additional 100/150 runs before you realize...if they dont bowl for too long, the 3 main bowlers tire out, so you need bowlers who will ensure a rest for other bowlers but no rest for the batsman.

That's why you need Sunny as the specialist 4th bowler, instead of a bits and pieces all rounder like Mullah or a Batsman scoring by chance (SN/JS).

Might have a look at this thread, to have a quick idea to find out if you can call Riyad/Nasir/Nayeem bowlers for test cricket:

Quote:
TOP SPINNERS.....

4. Mahmudullah/Naeem/Nasir should only be in the team because of their batting performance. Their bowling in first class cricket justifies little to proclaim them as an good bowler.

In Australi normally pacers debut at an early age, Jurgensen following the same route. it's not a bad idea to allow pacers like Abul play test match's, we have seen how Australi has produced raw talent in to world class players. I am no way suggesting that Abul might become the Best bowler, but its better to follow a system.

Well according to daily star, Abul, Nazim and Sunny are out of playing 11. That's a blunder! There is no need to play 2 off form batsmen like Riyad and SN. I mean I would rather play Sunny instead of above 2 or JS. With only one specialist spinner in Gazi, who is going debut, it's just too much task on Shakib and Gazi.

I can't see Sohag and Elias both making the cut. Sohag's inclusion (I would guess) is highly unlikely. He's a right arm offspinner who can't bat, we already have a decent offspinner who can also occupy the crease in either Naeem or Riyad.

I expect to see the following bowlers:

Shakib, Shahadat, Abul Hasan, Elias and Rubel.

Back up bowling to be provided by Naeem, Riyad, Nasir etc. If Elias has a bad match, I expect Enamul to be called up for the next test.

Good luck BD...

There are concerns for Shakib and rightly so. But I can guarantee that he won't be used a part timer and in fact will bowl the most overs among all the bowlers.

I wish we had Enamul in the team, who is just in the form of his life!

Combination of Enamul, Shohag Gazi, Shakib or Enam, Sunny, Shakib would be lethal!!! We would actually have a chance to bundle out 200. But playing 1 specialist spinner is a big mistake!!

Sorry the reply was still under construction...

Check Riyad's first class stats...

And yes, Shakib was under a lots of pressure in the past to take wickets, so he was over used, that's affecting his batting and harming him physically and deteriorating his bowling in the long term due to over use. We can't keep doing it when we have options.

It really makes no sense depending on bits and pieces bowlers like Riyad, Nasir in Test cricket.

I will be shocked .... If I see the team is like what Abu2Abu bhai is suggesting...might go on comma seeing Abul-Shahadat duo...haha... but he may be right with Abul, since Rubel may not be match fit.... But Gazi is in for sure...and I still think Sunny will be in for Riyad/SN.

Agreed. If it was up to me, I would drop Riyad and have Elias and Sohag in

I know what you mean Having Nasir come at number 8 is not a wise decision also. But I am just concerned about batting. If we do take both Gazi and Sunny then the batting becomes weak. SN/JS/Mullah are likely to fail. It then all comes to Tamim/Shakib/Mushy on batting.

Coming to think of it, we depend on Shakib when bowling. We also depend on Shakib on batting. In Test,ODIs,T20. Shakib na thakle ki je hoito.

On that point we can drop one of them and take Sunny, who is sure to pick up at least a few wickets and check runs, and that also increases the chance of Shakib doing well with the bat..due to reduced pressure of bowling..

Mullah is VC and so will play. JS/SN will play at number 2 and 3. If one is removed, then I don't know if Naeem can play at number 3. We don't want Shakib/Mushy to come at number 3 either. If not we can remove SN and have Nasir come at number 3. That opens up number 8 and Gazi can come in there followed by Sunny at 9.

Lineup has been confirmed in all major dailies. So no point of talking about what ifs:

Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Junaid Siddique, 3 Shahriar Nafees, 4 Naeem Islam, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mahmudullah (vice-capt), 8 Nasir Hossain, 9 Shohag Gazi, 10 Shahadat Hossain, 11 Rubel Hossain

Would Toss play a vital role? Everyong is worried if WI bats first, they would score 600.
I think if we had Both Sunny and Shohag, we could have cleaned them up within 250.

We are going overboard with this Gayle obsession. And yes looks like Shohag is bound to play. Let's hope the punt on Rubel's fitness pays off. And Shohag, if nothing else will be expected to keep one end tied up.
