Narrow escape for Sylhet Division squad
Narrow escape for Sylhet Division squad
Mohammad Isam
The squad of Sylhet Division, the Bangladesh domestic side, had a narrow escape when their team bus nearly plunged off a bridge near Bhairab, 83 km east of Dhaka after the driver lost control in the narrow highway. None of the players or coaching staff was hurt, they have not reached home despite having left Rangpur, the venue of their last National Cricket League match, 24 hours ago.
According to Rajin Saleh, the former Bangladesh captain and Sylhet stalwart, the bus struck the railing and hung out off the bridge. The front part of the bus was badly damaged after slamming against the barrier.
"We just about escaped," Rajin told ESPNcricinfo. "The bus was probably approached by a lorry from the right but most of us were asleep. We started off from Rangpur at 5:30 pm last evening and the drive was slow because of the fog. Probably it was a lorry which suddenly came, at least that's what the driver told us."
They vacated the bus and the next one arrived an hour later, which took them a few miles down the road where they met a roadblock due to a political strike from Tuesday morning across the country.
"We have been stuck in this restaurant in Bhairab since 7:00am this morning," Rajin said. "The people here have cooked for us but we won't get out of this place until the strike ends in the evening."
The accident occurred on one of the world's deadliest highways, the N2, which connects Dhaka and Sylhet, and reportedly kills 750 people a year.

Thanks to Allah for this narrow escape, could have been disastrous for Sylhet/Bangladesh cricket..
Highways in Bangladesh are dangerous as it is, adding thick winter fog makes it so much deadlier where things just pop out of nowhere (speaking from a similar experience which perhaps wasnt a close call like this, but equally traumatic)....

Simple....lack of value of life in our part of the world. But don't get me wrong, it's not always that the highway is always at fault...it's the drivers too. They become drivers without proper training showing middle fingers to the general traffic law thus causing accidents. Surely infrastructures such as wider highway needs to be built but unless safe driving awareness is created these accidents will not go away.

"narrow escape" would become "couldn't escape" soon if we don't do anything about it

Shukur al hamdulillah
Night time driving to Dahaka from outside is dangerous. There are no street lamps on the main roads leading to Dhaka, only the full beam lights of the approaching car( which may turn out to be a truck as it gets closer ) is your only hope of seeing ahead

Road safety? What road safety? There's no safety when rikshaws are allowed on the highway. You can't even call those highways or motorways depending on where you are. People literally walk about in the middle of the highway raising their lungi and scratching their backside. No joke.
Thank Allah that they are all alive.

True story: happen to me... We were traveling on Chittagong road and we saw a bike coming on the other direction. we thought who would drive a bike so late (it was around 2 am). anyway the bike was driving some times on the yellow divider sometime very close to it. so we thought we would scare him by driving close to it. but when we came very close we found out its a huge bus with one head light and we almost crashed with it... will never forget the situation...
