There was a time when he had played a good number of ODIs and yet averaged 14.
While it was always a delight watching him in domestic cricket, it wasn't until a year or so before his retirement that he really came good in the international arena, with a couple of 50s in the '99 world cup after piling up a thousand runs in the NCL. As far as ODIs are concerned, I think the likes of Akram, Bulbul and Atahar have done much better than him.
Having said that, you make a good point - he might have excelled given the kind of resources players have access to today.

Mind?
Mind is the colaboration of the nerve network, some preinstalled instinct, some reflex, and a mysterious unimitated xfactor that allows it to watch and learn instinctively.
A state of art technology from the Creator.

I think Shakib is the left-handed reincarnate of Sir Bradman when it comes to batting and Muralitharan when it comes to bowling. The World has never seen nor will it ever see a player like this legendary Shakib Al Hassan.
Seriously, guys. Aren't we going a bit overboard? Yes, he is playing well ... but why the incessant (and annoying) frothiness?
IanW's "Ask these questions at the end of a man's career, not the start" was the post of the thread.

At this moment, we need neither a Sir Bradman nor a Muralitharan.
We need a winning captain.

sorry to break the bubble. but Shakib is not the best. Here are my ratings;
Batting : C+ (Horrible technique for the sohrt and rising fast ball on the middle or leg, ok on the off side. He will never be a classical top four batsman.)
Bowling: B- (decent SLA -- nothing to write home about)
Fielding: B+ (good athletic fielder)
Captaincy: B (Introvert. looses temper when he bowls and a fielder misses. How well can he connect with others in the team with an inflated ego.)
Mental Strength : A+ (This is where he is clearly superior than everyone else. Strives for the best at every aspect. Best display temperment among all the current Bangladeshi players)
