ক্রীড়া প্রতিবেদক : ফিল্ডিং প্র্যাকটিসের জন্য কোন জায়গাটা নেব? কিউরেটর বদিউল আলম খোকনের কাছে জুলিয়ান ফাউন্টেনের প্রশ্নটি ছিল এমন। সঙ্গে সহাস্য এক পাদটিকা জুড়ে দেওয়া_আমাকে যে জায়গা দেবে, তার কিন্তু খবর হয়ে যাবে; গর্তটর্ত বানিয়ে ফেলব।
বাংলাদেশ দলের নতুন ফিল্ডিং কোচ প্রথম দিনেই মাঠে গর্ত খুঁড়ে বসেননি। তবে যে ১২ জনকে নিয়ে কাজ করেছেন, কঠোর পরিশ্রমের পূর্বাভাস পেয়ে গেছেন সবাই। পেসার মাহবুবুল আলম তো রোজার পাশাপাশি এ পরিশ্রমের ধকল সামলাতে না পেরে শুয়ে পড়লেন মাঠেই। ক্রমেই ভোঁতা হয়ে আসা ফিল্ডিংটা ধারালো করায় ফাউন্টেন যে চেষ্টার ত্রুটি করবেন না, প্রথম দিনেই সেটি স্পষ্ট।
নিউজিল্যান্ড সিরিজের জন্য ২৬ জনের ক্যাম্প শুরু হয়েছে কাল। নতুন ফিল্ডিং কোচ তো অনুশীলনে নতুনত্ব এনেছেনই; প্রধান কোচ জেমি সিডন্স খোলনলচে পাল্টে ফেলেছেন প্র্যাকটিসের ধারা। স্কোয়াডকে চার দলে ভাগ করে দুটি দলের নেট আর দুটি দলের ফিটনেস ট্রেনিং ছিল কাল। তাতে অনেক বেশি সময় ধরে ব্যাটিং-বোলিং করা গেল বলে ক্রিকেটাররা খুশি। প্রত্যেককে নিয়ে আলাদাভাবে কাজ করা গেল বলে সন্তুষ্ট কোচিং স্টাফরাও।
ক্রিকেটারদের কৌতূহলের কেন্দ্রে ছিলেন অবশ্য ফাউন্টেন। দুই দফায় ১২ জন ক্রিকেটার কাজ করেছেন তাঁর সঙ্গে। মধ্য দুপুরে মাশরাফি বিন মর্তুজা, আবদুর রাজ্জাক, ইমরুল কায়েস, নাজিম উদ্দিন, জহুরুল ইসলাম ও মাহবুবুল আলম। শেষ বিকেলে তামিম ইকবাল, মুশফিকুর রহিম, রকিবুল হাসান, রুবেল হোসেন, নাজমুল হোসেন ও ফয়সাল হোসেন। ৪৫ মিনিটের অনুশীলন পর্ব আবার ভাগ করা ছিল তিন ভাগে। শুরুতে ভোটেক্স (আমেরিকান সকার বলের সঙ্গে ডানা লাগানো) দিয়ে রানিং ক্যাচ, মাঝে জোড়ায় জোড়ায় স্বল্প দূরত্বের ক্যাচ আর শেষে ছয়জনকে এক লাইনে দাঁড় করিয়ে টেনিস র‌্যাকেট দিয়ে মারা বলে ক্যাচ প্র্যাকটিস। 'হাঁটু বাঁকা কর, দৌড়াও, ডানে ঝাঁপ দাও, বাঁয়ে সরে যাও, ব্যালেন্স ঠিক করো'_এহেন সব চিৎকারে পৌনে এক ঘণ্টা শিষ্যদের তটস্থ করে রেখেছিলেন ফাউন্টেন। মনোযোগী ছাত্রের মতো কেবল তাঁর নির্দেশ মেনে গেছেন ক্রিকেটাররা।
তো কর্মক্ষেত্রে ফিল্ডিং কোচের প্রথম দর্শন কেমন? মাশরাফি, তামিম, রাজ্জাক, জহুরুল_ভালো কিংবা মন্দের সার্টিফিকেট দিচ্ছেন না কেউ। তবে পরিশ্রম যে করাবেন ঢের, সেটি বোঝা হয়ে গেছে। 'ফিল্ডিংটাই তো আসলে খাটুনির ব্যাপার। ও কঠোর পরিশ্রম করালে, সেটিই স্বাভাবিক'_মাশরাফি র মূল্যায়ন। এত খাটুনির ফল মিলবে কবে? নির্দিষ্ট সময়সীমা বেঁধে দিতে নারাজ মাশরাফি, 'আমাদের ফিল্ডিংটা অনেক দিন ধরেই খারাপ যাচ্ছিল। তবে ক্রিকেটে একটি জিনিসই খুব দ্রুত উন্নতি করা যায়_ফিল্ডিং। আশা করি, গত কিছু দিন যেমন ফিল্ডিং করছি, নিউজিল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে তার চেয়ে ভালো করব।' প্রথম দিন তামিমের চোখে লেগেছে ফাউন্টেনের ইতিবাচকতা, 'আসলে ও কেমন কোচ, বলার জন্য সময়টা তাড়াতাড়ি হয়ে যায়। তবে কথাবার্তায় খুব ইতিবাচক। আমরা যতটা চাই ভালো ফিল্ডার হতে, ও-ও চায় আমাদের ভালো ফিল্ডার বানাতে।'
সেই ভালো ফিল্ডার বনে যাওয়ার প্রক্রিয়াটা বড্ড সহজ নয়। অন্তত জুলিয়ান ফাউন্টেনের কোচিং-দর্শন তেমন নয়। ঘোষণার স্বরে তেমনটাই জানালেন সাবেক এ বেসবল খেলোয়াড়, 'যত দিন যাবে, অনুশীলনের মাত্রা তত কঠিন হবে। কঠিন থেকে কঠিনতর।' তাতে কি দ্রুতই ফিল্ডিংয়ের উন্নতি হবে? আশাবাদী শোনাল তাঁর কণ্ঠ, 'আমি যদি নিজের কাজ ঠিকমতো করি এবং ক্রিকেটাররা তাদের কাজ করে, তাহলে উন্নতি না হওয়ার কোনো কারণ নেই। আপনারা নিশ্চয়ই উন্নতি দেখবেন। কারণ কঠোর পরিশ্রম করলে সবারই সব সময় উন্নতির সুযোগ আছে।'
কঠোর পরিশ্রমের ভয়ে ভীত নয় বাংলাদেশের ক্রিকেটাররা। প্রতিনিধি হয়ে স্পিনার আবদুর রাজ্জাকের কণ্ঠে প্রতিধ্বনিত যেন সবার কথা, 'কত আর পরিশ্রম করাবে! আর পরিশ্রম করালে সেটি তো আমাদের ভালোর জন্যই, তাই না?' আসলে যে কতটা ভালো, সেটি বোঝার জন্য নিউজিল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে সিরিজ পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করা ছাড়া উপায় কি!

Siddons turns focus on
individual skills

Improvement of individual skills has now become a top priority as Bangladesh began their practice with the World Cup cricket in their mind at the Sher-a-Bangla National Stadium on Sunday.
Coach Jamie Siddons divided the 26 players of the preliminary squad into four groups with one group called for net practice while the others were kept busy in the field by new recruit Julien Fountain.
On the first day, the batting group included Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Roqibul Hassan, Jahirul Islam, Imrul Kayes and Nazimuddin and all they had practised in the nets were reverse sweeps and drives.
In the centre wicket they, however, were allowed to play all kinds of shots.
‘I always wanted to put emphasis on this kind of training. It gives me an opportunity to work with them individually for a long period as we are still a month away from the series,’ said coach Jamie Siddons.
Prolific opener Tamim Iqbal, who recently was nominated by the International Cricket Council for the Test Player of the Year award, welcomed the idea.
‘This is a new concept of training which we have not done earlier. I really enjoyed it,’ Tamim told reporters after a gruelling net session. ‘Earlier we used to bat for half an hour while today [Sunday] I batted more than two hours.’
‘Naturally if we could continue in this manner then we are sure to put up a good show against the Kiwis,’ said Tamim, who was carrying a wrist injury and was hoping to fly out to Australia sooner than later for an expert opinion.
The new fielding coach Julien Fountain had also sweated on the first day of business and was the last man to come out of the field after spending more than three-and-a-half hours with the players.
The batsmen, who spent time in the nets, were also called onto the field to take elementary lessons from Fountain.
Skipper Mashrafee bin Murtaza was among his keen students and he was visibly impressed.
‘We are really very
keen to improve our fielding and under the new coach we are bound to improve. He seemed very professional from the beginning and I am impressed,’ Mashrafee told reporters.
‘Hopefully the improvement will be reflected in the coming series against the Kiwis,’ added the skipper underlining the need for a fielding coach.

I don't know in which place you live, but you surely have a lot of bidesh prem for some understandable reasons, but when that turns into bidshi prem, only then you can be sarcastic about a national entity (Employer) and value a bideshi employee, yet to deliver.

I know from where this attitude is coming, unfortunate nation we are. If we don't have respect for ourselves for the right reason, who in this world will have? Looks like some people are born to respect others only, however ill we are treated. "That guy hasn't delivered what he is being paid for" you can continue your respect in your way, in private please. ‘ক্রিকেটই বেসবলের বাবা-মা’

খ্যাতিটা ক্রিকেট কোচ হিসেবে বলেই কিনা ‘বেসবল খেলোয়াড়’ পরিচয়ে একটু আপত্তি আছে তাঁর। জুলিয়েন ফাউন্টেন বরং বলতে পছন্দ করেন ‘আমি দুটো খেলারই খেলোয়াড়’।

 নতুন জায়গা, নতুন কাজ। উপভোগ করছেন নিশ্চয়ই?
জুলিয়েন ফাউন্টেন: হ্যাঁ, উপভোগ তো অবশ্যই করছি। অসাধারণ। ছেলেরা আসলেই ভালো। কঠোর পরিশ্রম করতে ভালোবাসে সবাই।
 খেলোয়াড়দের দিক থেকে তাহলে ভালোই সাড়া পাচ্ছেন?
ফাউন্টেন: খুবই ভালো সাড়া পাচ্ছি। তারা যে টেকনিকে ফিল্ডিং করে সেটা একটু ভিন্ন। তবে আমি যেটা বোঝাতে চাইছি সেটা সবাই সহজেই ধরতে পারছে। এটা ভালো লক্ষণ।
 আপনি কি তাহলে নতুন কিছু শেখাতে চাইছেন তাঁদের?
ফাউন্টেন: প্রথমে আমি তাদের স্বাভাবিক দক্ষতাকেই আরও নিখুঁত করার চেষ্টা করছি। নতুন কিছু করার আগে আমাকে তো বুঝতে হবে তারা আসলে কী করতে পারে, কোন জায়গায় তাদের সাহায্য লাগবে। তাদের দক্ষতা এবং সামর্থ্য সম্পর্কে ভালোভাবে জানার পর আমি পরের ধাপে যাব।
 কাজের বাইরে ঢাকা শহর কেমন লাগছে? এখানকার মানুষ, আবহাওয়া...
ফাউন্টেন: খুবই ভালো, আমার এখানে সত্যিই ভালো লাগছে। সবাই খুব বন্ধুভাবাপন্ন, সব কাজে সাহায্য করতে এগিয়ে আসে। মাঠে, রাস্তাঘাট-দোকানপাট সবখানে।
 আপনি তো মূলত একজন বেসবল খেলোয়াড় ছিলেন...
ফাউন্টেন: (হাত দিয়ে থামিয়ে প্রশ্ন শেষ করতে না দিয়েই) একটা ব্যাপার, আমি কিন্তু ক্রিকেট খেলাটাই আগে শুরু করি। এর অনেক অনেক পর বেসবলে আসি। কাজেই আমি দুই খেলারই খেলোয়াড়।
 তাহলে ক্রিকেট কোচ হলেন কেন? এটাকেই কি বেশি ভালোবাসেন?
ফাউন্টেন: দুটি খেলাই আমার কাছে সমান পছন্দের। (একটু ভেবে) ক্রিকেট কোচ হলাম, এটার কারণ ভাগ্য...আমার ভাগ্য। একবার একটা ক্রিকেট কোচিং ক্যাম্পে আমাকে বেসবল সম্পর্কে কিছু টিপস দেওয়ার জন্য ডাকা হলো। সেখান থেকেই আমি ক্রিকেটারদের কোচ হয়ে গেলাম, বেসবল খেলোয়াড় বা কোচের চেয়ে এই পরিচয়টাই এখন বড়।
 ক্রিকেটের সঙ্গে বেসবলের কী সম্পর্ক? কী ধরনের মিল আছে দুটি খেলায়?
ফাউন্টেন: দুটি খেলায় অনেক মিল। ঐতিহাসিকভাবেই ক্রিকেট আর বেসবলের একটা সম্পর্ক আছে। বেসবলের জন্ম ক্রিকেট থেকেই। আজ থেকে দুই-তিন শ বছর আগে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের মানুষ ক্রিকেট থেকে বেসবল খেলাটা বের করে। এর পর থেকে ক্রিকেটের রাস্তা এক দিকে চলে যায়, বেসবলের আরেক দিকে। তবে ক্রিকেটকেই বেসবলের বাবা-মা বলতে পারেন। তবে টেকনিকের দিক দিয়ে দুটি খেলায় মিল যেমন অনেক, পার্থক্যও অনেক।
 এর আগে ইংল্যান্ড, ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ আর পাকিস্তান দলের ফিল্ডিং কোচ ছিলেন। কোন দলকে ভালো ফিল্ডিং দল মনে হয়েছে?
ফাউন্টেন: তিনটা দলই পেশাদার দল। ভালো ভালো ক্রিকেটার ছিল সেসব দলে। আলাদা করে কোনো দলের কথা বলতে পারব না। এই তিন দলের সঙ্গেই আমার আনন্দময় সময় কেটেছে। এখন বাংলাদেশ...বাংলাদে� �ের ব্যাপারেই আমার সব মনোযোগ।

says Fountain
Julien Fountain, the newly-appointed fielding coach of Bangladesh, has spent his first week in charge when he attended the practice session of the national cricketers at Mirpur. Fountain shared his first-hand experience in an interview with New Age’s Atif Azam at a city hotel on Friday.


Q: How are you getting accustomed to your new job?

JF: It’s good, coming to a new country from the UK. Obviously it’s quite hot and I am trying to get accustomed to the weather but you know I have spent a lot of time in hot countries coaching anyway, so heat is not a problem. It’s been great so far.

Q: What is your preliminary impression of Bangladesh as a fielding side?

JF: I can’t make a judgment as I have been here just for a week, but from what I have seen I can say that they are young, keen and they move well and it is the first step in the long journey. I am confident they are going to perform very, very well.

Q: What lacking you have identified in Bangladeshi players over the last few days?

JF: I am not looking for any lacking at the moment and it’s too early to say they haven’t got this or that. All I am doing is giving them small pieces of information, lots of small pieces of information and when they put them together we go forward. Each player is different to others and each player has different skills. I am trying to see how skilful they are.

Q: Do you think Bangladesh are any different to any other Asian countries as far as fielding is concerned?

JF: My experience says many countries, not just the Asians, have a culture for batting and bowling and fielding remains poorly attended. In Asia, due to weather and surface the players tend to shy away from fielding but Sri Lanka broke that mould years ago and they made fielding top priority and I think it’s not insurmountable.

Q: Why do you think Australia and South Africa have such a remarkable fielding standard?

JF: This is really an interesting topic and this is a question I am being asked regularly. Probably there are lots of reasons. One of the reasons maybe they like to play physical game and are very happy to hit the grass and dive on the floor as rugby is one of their leading sport and I think that is one of the big factor. In the West Indies and in Asia where rugby is not that popular sport the players tend to get rigid while having physical contacts with the ground.

Q: Do you think you can take Bangladesh fielding to a higher level?

JF: To be honest, I think of all the countries I have worked, Bangladesh have the chance to reach the highest level because they are young enough and are fit enough. They have got the right mental approach and the technical skills and the right people to guide them with me and my other coaching staff, so they could be the ideal fielding team and I am confident that they can surprise everybody.

Q: Do you think fielding always necessarily means catching? How important is ground fielding to you?

JF: You have to consider fielding as a total package as it is very important to hold catches as the bowlers work hard to create them but ground fielding is massively important. These days you don’t lose matches by a huge margin, so the little saves in the ground can mount up to be a huge benefit for the team. The message I want to put across is that every single ball is important, every single run save is important, every single opportunity is important and nobody should stand still throughout the innings.

Q: How was your experience with Inzamam-ul Haq as a fielder?

JF: I disagree that he was one of the worst fielders in the history of world cricket as there is no statistic to prove and is totally based on assumption. Hopefully my fielding software can help me in providing with statistics.

Q: Is it true that you also helped Inzamam improve his batting?

JF: My role is specific as a fielding coach but I have got a lot of experience in batting and bowling too as I have worked in different countries. At the moment I am helping the pace bowlers with their slower deliveries and I am ready to contribute wherever there is a scope.

Q: Do you have plans to share your vast knowledge and experience with the local coaches?

JF: Certainly if the BCB permits me and if I can make time I will do that. I believe that one’s knowledge and experience can be explored to the fullest if it is widely spread.

Q: You have worked with several coaches. Who had the greatest influence on you?

JF: With all due respect I would say late Malcolm Marshall has been the greatest influence and as a coach it was my privilege to work with him, he could impart knowledge in almost every department of the game.

Q: What about your fielding software? How it will help the Bangladesh team?

JF: The software will allow us to get statistics of every single ball and every single player, so when the game is over you can see the performance of every individual in the team. The upgraded version is on its way and hopefully we will use them against the Kiwis.

Q: What is your expectation in the coming series against the New Zealand?

JF: To be honest I don’t have any expectation as this is the first series I am involved in with the Bangladesh cricket team. But all I want is that they execute the skills well, they execute the plans well. Obviously I want them to win but I want them to commit more and give hundred percent in the field.

Fountain is thought to be the first coach in cricket to bring in learnings from baseball. Mike Young is another who has had similar success with the Australian team in particular and began later. Fountain believes cricket can still learn more from baseball. "Taken in the correct context, cricket can learn loads from baseball," Fountain said. "Taken out of context by coaches simply quoting 'They do it in baseball' can do more harm than good. Baseball teaches its fielders correct biomechanics for each skill, correct biomechanics for accurate, powerful throwing, tactical awareness for pre-shot movements and post-shot situations, sliding, diving, relays, backing up, multiple-play scenarios, decision-making, the list is huge."

As a fan of both sports I couldn't agree more with the above assessment. I like what I hear so far...

You may be right, because many of our players even don't have the proper muscles needed for those bio-metrics to be put in use.

This guy will teach ways of throwing/fielding ... many of the boys will find hard to execute because of lack of strengths in those unused muscles. However, still there will be improvement in their thought processes & in their ability to assess different situations etc. And if these skills can be passed to the school cricketers and lower age groups over a period, you will find natural improvement at all levels. And those kids will discover their unused muscles and be careful to improve it in Gyms/exercises.

Anyway, a nice interview and the guy has control on his mouth. He sounds more professional.

That's how All srilankans come with proper physical fitness of a good fielder, that makes their job a lot easy to learn and execute what they are told at the national level.

Seems that many national teams are employing baseball coaches as fielding coaches, SL had one on a short term basis and one can see that from the recently completed tri series that their firelding and throwing has really improved. Hope that this will be a plus for BD.
