I passed!
I confirmed my PhD today! In Australia, the PhD program requires students to defend their thesis in front of a panel after the first year. Today, I did just that, and I am feeling on top of teh world, baby! Yeah!!

Congrats!! Must be a great day for you
Is this like the "qualifying exam" in US that happens before you get formally approved by the department? In other words- Is all your pain over, or is it just starting?

jabbar. I thought I congratulated you last night. Where did my post go???
Maybe I was about to, and got distracted.
So congratulations on defending your thesis successfully!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What free advice can we get from you here in BC? Is it a doctorate in medicine? science? computer science? business?

Thanks everyone for your warm comments. I'm truly touched.
However, I feel a little embaressed. The "confirmation" was simply the first major hurdle in being a PhD candidate that happens after 1 year of the project. I basically had to write a report and give a presentation in front of a panel who "grill" me about my thesis. It's quite nerve wracking and critical: if you fail you get booted out of the PhD program. Fortunately, the panelists liked my ideas
I am not a "Dr." yet! That will come in a few more years time (2 years hopefully). When that day comes, I will really celebrate!
As for my field, I am studying Artificial Intelligence, in a field called "multiagent systems". Specifically, I am playing around with things called UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles).
Thanks again guys

Only the secret handshake, Zunaid
The elite restroom is off-limits until his final defence. Not that I have any doubts of his getting there within the next two years.
Congrats, Jabbar

Damn, and I thought Jabbar was a high school kid with semi-decent English skills. And how can you get a PhD in three years? That sounds like an awfully cheap PhD.
I am messing with you. Congrats!
