I saw an interview of Bishen Singh bedi ( former Indian fast bowler) and he said that in cricket there is only 2 type of swings IN SWING and OUT SWING. there is nothing named reverse swing. and according to him that the reverse swing which is said to be invented by the PAK bowlers can be only be bowled if the the STRUCTURE & SHAPE of the ball is changed. If the shape of the ball remains intact no bowler can bowl any reverse swing.

Interesting. Did Mr. Singh mentioned anything about late swing?

Respectfully, I submit that:
1. Bishen Singh Bedi was never a fast bowler. He, together with Chandra, Prasanna and Venkat formed the India spin trio/quad attack of the late sevnties.
2. Bedi has recently given to outrageously erronious remarks which have drawn widespread criticism from his countrymen. Among these have been that India has been unable to produce any quality pacemen. His commentary on reverse spin is a tad bit suspect.
Thank you.

Yeah,
what the hell does Bedi know about fast bowling?
Chinaman, nice article. A couple of things for you. Firstly, which way does the ball swing? Most people will still be confused about whether the ball swings towards the rough or the shiny side. Your picture does clear that up though.
I'd like to venture a guess why it is called reverse swing. The pictures that you posted show that the ball will swing towards the shiny side for reverse swing. That is in reverse to natural swing which is always towards the rough side. When a ball is 25 overs old, the ball usually swings towards the rough. By the time its 60 overs old, you can make it swing late towards the shiny side by pitching it up at speed. Therefore, with the same grip and wrist action, you are getting it to swing in reverse of your natural swing.
Also, reverse outswing is very very rare. Its the in-dippers that are the usual reverse swing, the late inswinging yorker sort of deliveries. Those actually do work in reverse of your expected trajectory.

I agree with Sham on reverse outswingers being rare. However, Wasim Akram was a great exponent of this reverse outswing art. I still remember how he yorked Glenn McGrath during Pakistan's 1st match against Australia in '99 world cup at Headingley. Very very masterful.

While doing commentary on tv some years ago, Bedi expressed the opinion that India produces a lot of spinners because Mahatma Gandhi himself was prolific spinner

Actually when a ball is 25 overs old, it swings very little if at all. Normal or traditional swing occurs with the new ball and will continue to do so as long as the seam is pronounced and both surfaces are equally more or less smooth. Similarly reverse swing occurs with meticulous conditioning at arround 45 overs and will continue to do so as long as the differential smoothness on the surface remains high with the seam virtually flatten.
