Default Bowling Animations: Draft

We've had quite a few questions about SLA vs legspin vs off-spin - of course, we could all go to wiki and read up - but I was thinking, I would create some animated gifs that explain the nuances of the different styles.

We could then look at different styles side by side.

I am putting up this animated gif (created via flash) as a first draft. Hoping y'all would have comments and suggestions and I could then create whole suite of animations.

Examples of swing (movement in the air) would be nice.

I will try to do all - but do comment on the animation itself - what else would make it clear the different nuances for bowling style.

I have been thinking of front view animation, where from the POV of the bowler or even better from the POV of the batsman but my flash skills do not go that far....

I am not trying to go into a discussion of the differences but in the way to visualize this so that when we do it is clear...

Actually there is no difference in leg spin and SLA, because both turn away from the right hand batsmen. The second picture could very well depict an SLA bowling from around the wicket as well. There are subtle nuances in the two styles which make it different. SLA is finger spin while leg spin is wrist spin so the latter has more variation and bounce off the wicket. Finger spin is usually faster than wrist spin as well in terms of speed.

Would it be fair to say that wrist spin is harder to pull off than finger spin - hence there are so few classy leg-spinners?

Absolutely hell yeah. Any decent cricketer can bowl some sort of finger spin. However leg spin requires a lot more control. You have to use your shoulder and wrists a lot and it is very difficult to keep a tight line and length bowling leg spin which is why you often see leg spinners bowling one or two bad delivery every over barring the Great perv Warne who in my mind is the best spinner I have seen to ever play the game.

Awesome stuff, Zunaid bhai.

Welcome newbie Ehsan...and then I notice you have GT 5000 posts and have been here since 2003. You sure deserve a lot of respect. What a great guy you are to have been here since then. A community elder who has seen things we can only dream of.

Zunaid bhai - This is what I see as a diff betwwen the 2 (I tried to do it with my cork ball used for chimey padding - and I have only one of those, I promise) :

SLA: should actually be the 2nd one, where spin is a visually appreciable change in angle upon bounce. Movement in air prior to drop and after is like two joined sides of a octagon. Approach to earth prior to drop is more like a shuttle entry - definitely will occur. From a RHB point of view, is more likely to be hot forward over long on, for a six or caught.

Lespinner: Curved (or boomeranged) propagation of a ray (or ball) that skids into batsmen (of whatever hand). From a RHB point of view, is more likely to be flicked behind or through square leg.

This is great! Especially for people like me who have been following cricket for 11 years and still don't understand the nuances of spin bowling (too busy looking at the bowlers bums instead of the ball mayhaps?) I always thought SLA was a leftie offspinner, which as the picture shows, goes from leg to off? Does that mean they are a leg spinner but just left armed? But is the technique same as offspin? *confujed*

Oops. We are all straight people here. There will be repercussions if you even think of it as Dr. Z explained.

As to your query:

Dr. Z..how about the image of a bowler...perhaps a stick figure...with the ball originating from the left arm for an sla and from the right hand for a leggie i.e. just to visually make the point that the ball essentially spins in the same direction but from different hands.

NKVD, your post makes me laugh. Yes, I have been inactive for a while. But yes, I have been around here for more than 7 years. I didn't realize it but its been a LONG time. Now, let me take the opportunity to welcome you to the forum.

My last non-topic posts. *Runs before Dr. Z gets mad*.
