Default How much dowry did you get?

Guys, with so many young men getting married here lately, I asked myself WHY? why would some one get married? And immediately, I got the answer - it must be dowry.

So gentlemen, please share with us - what you've received as a dowry. I think Razab bhai got a watch that he sold for two pieces of kotkoti.

I didn't get anything guys. I am thinking of sending my wife back to her dad until he buys me at least the subscription for the world cup. What do you guys think? Am I selling my self short?

so what did you get - so i get an idea to fix my price.

The dowry I got was in CDN in '07...when it was trading at $1.20 US. But then...the currency fell, and went to $0.9, and I was broke. So it wasn't very useful dowry.

For those men who are thinking of asking for dowry...ask for it in gold bars. It's a much better quantifier than currency

I mean I don't expect gifts in my wedding but if I get a good gift, I will appreciate that person and will probably remember that gift for the rest of my life. It's that kind of an event. This is the reason why dowry/gifts from bride's family/whatever you call it - can be a positive thing.

Either way, I am kicking out my wife back to her dad's house if I don't get what I want. I feel cheated.

yeah but what was it? $20 CDN? Gold bar is not a bad idea but it has to be at least be affordable with sell of their property.

see kabir given you have such a good business mindset, you made the mistake of getting married to a woman ( a depreciating asset as they age). A better investment would have been to marry a man. oh but then again, i forgot - she is the one wearing pants in your relationship.

In Islam: Dowry is for women; not for men. Must be paid in full (whatever reasonable amount was mutually agreed upon) as part of marriage contract. This money exclusively belongs to bride.

yes that's true Nasif bhai. You are talking about "den mohor" i think. Many people think that that money is only paid in case of divorce but that's not true.. it must also be paid during marriage unless the wife forgives. If marriage is supposed to be the union of two equals why do girls get everything?

If i have to sign a den mohor or dowry for the wife, I wanna a dowry too. Is that so evil? I mean I am gonna burn in hell fire if I don't fulfill my obligation. And if I merely send her home when I don't receive my dowry from her parents, I am evil? Why the double standards? which is worse?

thanks for clarifying that for our foreign guest... (stating the obvious joke/sarcasm does help).

I just realized how we, the seasoned members, enjoy these kind of threads by idumb/ZeeshanM but a new visitor (and if he happens to be non-Bangladeshi) might be taken aback by certain things.

I remember one of the indian cricket forums quoting few member's posts from BC (which were just some sarcastic remarks) and labeling them as "This is the Bangladeshis knowledge on cricket". While these misunderstandings are almost impossible to avoid, maybe we can work on the obvious ones...

So Stuge (or anyone other readers getting confused over this), hope you didnt get the wrong idea about Bangladesh.... this is some lighthearted fun we have around here in BC.... cheers...

My in-laws are southern Gun-Dealers and my father-in-law a few wekks after I got married, gave me two Brownings as dowry and I said, no no abba, ami moslem, I cannot accept this dowry, they (the main man, big man) will instantly put me in Gua'namo and your daughter will never see me again and then the next day my mother-in-law bought me a happy meal and some socks and a set of pots and pans from Wal-Mart. + a tooth-brush and a 12 pack of Irish-Spring soaps.

Yup, I have a great business mindset. That's why I played my cards right, and got a bou who trains doctors (doctor - something you'll be when you grow older).

As for who wears pants...lets just say I didn't have to settle for a kaajer buwa so that I could wear pants.

As for depreciating assets, a wife who makes the same as I do ( > what a doctor makes initially)...it shouldn't be considered as a depreciating asset. A kaajer buwa? May be...

Kabir, it is good to know that you married your wife for her money. I will marry any kajer bua despite her being the most depreciating asset in the world if I love her because in marriage, my investment is emotional and for a happy life, not money like you materialistic, greedy, immoral capitalist mindset people. I mean My God!! who talks about their wife like that - as if she is a piece of property you own....

and people thought I am evil for asking about dowry...the above mindset is the real face of devil.
