Two new caps named in Bangladesh squad
Wisden Cricinfo staff
April 19, 2004
Bangladesh have named two new caps in a 15-man squad for their maiden tour of the Caribbean in May and June.
Faisal Hossain and Abdur Razzaq, both batsmen who bowl part-time offspin, have been called up in place of Al-Sahariar Rokon and Manjural Islam, who toured Zimbabwe in February but were unable to make an impression.
The tour party leaves Dhaka on May 6, with the first of three one-day internationals beginning in St Vincent on May 15. The tour concludes with two Tests in St Lucia and Jamaica from May 28.
Bangladesh squad
Habibul Bashar (capt), Rajin Saleh, Hannan Sarkar, Shahariar Hossain, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Mushfiqur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud, Khaled Mashud (wk), Mohammad Rafique, Manjural Islam, Faisal Hossain, Tapash Baisya, Tareq Aziz, Abdur Razzaq.

It will be decided by the selectors at the end of the one-day series (another report suggested at the end of the three-day match, which I think is ridiculous because judging anything on one-match is not fair)
My guess:
Khaled Mahmud
Feisal Hossain
Rajjak Raj
but depnding on the performances in the one-dayers, Khaled Mahmud and Feisal Hossain may be retained and Alok Kapali and one of the openers might head home.

I think Hannan should not play in the ODI's at all. I think he is a Test type batsman & should be used in tests only, at least in this tour. Shahriar should be good for opening in the ODIs, he reads the fast ball well. WI will definitely use the 4 new pacers against us. Shahriar does not shy away from taking shots, even under pressure.

Daily Star Report: Selectors' spin plot
Selectors' spin plot
Sports Reporter
Chief selector Faruque Ahmed said that he went against the conventional thinking by picking more spinners for Bangladesh's first tour of the West Indies starting next month.
Traditionally a visit to the Caribbean, which is renowned for its faster tracks, intimidates a touring team to pack its attack with as many pacers as possible. But Faruque and his three coleagues including coach Dav Whatmore have gone against the grain by selecting a lot of spinners.
"We have taken into consideration the condition of the wickets in the Caribbean. But as we do not have quality pacers, we decided to concentrate on spin. At least we know that West Indian batsmen have showed weakness against slow bowling," said Faruque while announcing the squads for the two Tests and three one-day internationals at a local hotel yesterday.
The selectors as predicted picked uncapped left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak and southpaw Faisal Hossain, also a slow left-armer, in the 15-man one-day squad.
The axe fell on experienced left-arm paceman Monjurul Islam and attacking right-hand batsman Al-Shahriar. The pair failed to perform up to the expectations in Bangladesh's tour of Zimbabwe in February-March.
The chief selector spoke highly of Razzak, who the former national captain thought, could complement the country's top bowler Mohammad Rafique.
"Monju was not considered because we were looking for a spinner. And I think Razzak was the best available choice for us. Al Shahriar was ignored because he did not qualify for the best six batsmen we have chosen for the series," said Faruque adding that rookie Faisal got the nod by scoring heavily both in the National League and against the touring Zimbabwe A team.
The selectors have also recalled Javed Omar. The experienced opener, along with Alamgir Kabir and young left-arm spinner Enamul Haque, will join the team for the two Tests after the one-day series. But he did not disclose the names of the three players who will return home after completing the one-day duties.
Whatmore also endorsed Faruque's spin-pronged attack and wanted to draw inspiration from the success of Zimbabwean left-arm spinner Raymond Price, who took 20 odd wickets against Brain Lara's new-look team.
The 50-year-old Australian also said that he was not worried about West Indies having a number of left-handed batsmen.
"We have got good players and whether they bowl off-spin or others, does not matter. I am confident about Rafique and Razzak. I agree that the wickets will be helpful for pace bowlers, but I can also field three pacers any time. It's only just three games," said Whatmore.
Still searching for the right opening combination, Whatmore said that he would not mind to send Manjarul Islam to open again after his success in the fifth and final one-day international against Zimbabwe where the southpaw scored 63.
When asked whether he was aware of the suspect action of Razzak, who was reported by umpires while playing in the domestic cricket, Whatmore said that he did not find anything wrong with him.
"We have filmed his action. I don't think there will be any problem," said Whatmore.
Meanwhile, BCB's Cricket Committee chairman Mahbub Anam announced that Habibul Bashar would captain the side until the Champions Trophy in England in September this year.
The country's top batsman will also lead the Tigers in the Asia Cup in July-August in Colombo.
SQUAD
Habibul Bashar, Rajin Saleh, Shahriar Hossain, Hannan Sarker, Mohammad Ashraful, Alok Kapali, Khaled Mahmud, Khaled Mashud, Mushfiqur Rahman, Mohammad Rafique, Manjarul Islam, Tareq Aziz, Tapas Baishya, Faisal Hossain and Abdur Razzak.
(Javed Omar, Enamul Haque and Alamgir Kabir will join the squad for the Tests)
ITINERARY
May 15: 1st ODI in St. Vincent
May 16: 2nd ODI in St. Vincent
May 19: 3rd ODI in Grenada
May 28-June 1: 1st Test in St. Lucia
June 4-June 8: 2nd Test in Jamaica.

According to Jugantor Sports report (20-04-2004), Rana has been included in the team mainly as a Batsman, not as a Bowler. This justifies the selection of Raj, as stated by Whatmore. His excellent bowling capability has helped the selectors to make the selection easier.

Well, when i was in bangladesh, a newspaper reported that accroding to Whatmore Kapali will not be selected for test matches in the future, but will remain in the one day squad, as this was proven in the last test match series against zimbabwe
