Default AFP: Umpire kills Bangladesh cricket fan with bat: Police

http://www.couriermail.com.au/ipad/u...-1226256751534

A CRICKET umpire has allegedly killed a teenage spectator in Bangladesh by hitting him on the head with a bat.

Nazrul Islam, 15, ran onto the pitch during an amateur game in the remote northern district of Kishoreganj and started an argument with the umpire, who took one of the players' bats and hit the teenager, police said.

Nazrul showed no serious injury from the blow during the game on Friday but suffered an internal haemorrhage overnight and died in hospital the following day, local police chief Mosharraf Hossain said yesterday.

"The two argued over a not-out decision by the umpire. He accused the umpire of bias. At one stage, the umpire became angry, took a bat and hit the young boy on the head," Mr Hossain said.

The umpire was being sought for questioning but had gone into hiding, he added.

Cricket is hugely popular sport in Bangladesh, which last year co-hosted the World Cup with India and Sri Lanka.

That's one way of ensuring no one ever accuses you of bias....

It's also a nice way of landing in jail and finding yourself doing time for manslaughter.

Poor boy. May Allah rest his soul in heaven.

I know how it feels to get hit on head by a cricket bat. My younger brother once got hurt accidentally on his head while playing and we had to rush through to hospital. I pray no one goes through such tough time.

RIP, brother. To his family - on behalf of BC friends, please accept our condolences.

A sad moment for BD cricket. BCB should compensate to this loss.

To the murderer: Thou anger will burn thyself in jail.

May Allah grant him Jannah.

This incidence just highlights the need and importance for Umpire Decision Review System(UDRS) even at local level of cricket.

Sad news - but shouldn't have run onto the field in the first place. Umpire has to do time for involuntary manslaughter - big man hitting a kid!

I pray for the victim and his family.

This is so distressing! BTW, this should not be a manslaughter. More like second degree murder. Nice way to advance his umpiring career.

^^ Given that Bangladesh follows the UK's legal system, rather than the US's, I don't think there is any such thing as second degree murder in Bangladesh. There would be voluntary/involuntary manslaughter.

In any case, RIP to the departed soul. I'm originally from Kishoreganj and it saddens me to think that it would make international headlines for such a tragic reason.

My heartfelt doas for the departed soul. RIP.

An ugly picture painted on the canvas of such a beautiful game. May such incidences never happen again.
