Default Georgia attacks Russian Province, Russia retaliating

Is it a co-incident that over 1000 US troops was at Georgia training them and now after a month they attack South Ossetia?

The timing couldn't be more bad. Most of head of states are at beijing (vacation).

Russia has mobalized her troops and already started bombing Georgia.

What will NATO and US do? Seems like Russia is ready to retaliate and reclaim the former Soviet State. Georgia also borders with Turkey and wanted to join NATO which Russia fiercely opposed.

Most South Ossetians hold Russian citizenship.

Nothing will happen, except the death of scores of innocent civilians.
Russia, with its gas pipeline in eastern europe,(not sure if it includes Georgia), holds an advantage in the negotiation table, not to forget the military power they still posses from the Soviet era.

They are also rising economically, again.

Power and energy struggle from Russia, US and China, as well as increasing US diplomatic and military presence creating another war oriented area in the world. Albania, Azerbaidjan, Uzbek in the line.

for once i support russia, Georgia is a US stooge and US wants to use it as a pawn against Russia just like Taiwan is pawn against China. In neocons eyes, only US has right to attack countries or to retaliate. Only US has right to post spies or send spy planes, if others do it, they scream and whine like a baby

for once i am with Russia too. Here is my 10 cents...
1. Georgia bring back its 3000 troops from Iraq with the help of US air plane who helped massacre Iraqi civilians.
2. Russia humiliate/massacre/or do any form of brutality/fatality in their own georgian graveyard.
3. Russia prepare attacks on US bases around Europe(Starting from Czech Republic for installing american interceptor missiles and raising tension akin to the Cuban missile crisis in the 1960s) for helping chela munda country to divide Russia.
4. US, Russia, Europe going to coldwar or HOT War.
5. We helpless, opportunityless countries set back, relax, and enjoy war for few weeks or month.
6. Nuclear Wars underway.
7. Most of us die with others.
8. Eirth's destruction of civilization cycle is complete. Blue planet is back to dark age.
9. Bangladeshi population survived this devastation most compare to other countries
10. We invade most of the world with our desi da, koral, kachi and with our superior human production capability.

SOUTH OSSETIA TIMELINE
1991-92 S Ossetia fights war to break away from newly independent Georgia; Russia enforces truce
2004 Mikhail Saakashvili elected Georgian president, promising to recover lost territories
2006 S Ossetians vote for independence in unofficial referendum
April 2008 Russia steps up ties with Abkhazia and South Ossetia
July 2008 Russia admits flying jets over S Ossetia; Russia and Georgia accuse each other of military build-up
7 August 2008 After escalating Georgian-Ossetian clashes, sides agree to ceasefire; however Georgia launches a surprise attack
8 August 2008 Russia sends in columns of armour and troops and fighting erupts with Georgian forces in and around Tskhinvali
9 August 2008 Russian jets bomb central Georgian town of Gori, Russia says its troops have "liberated" Tskhinvali
__________________________________________________ ___________________
What is the status of South Ossetia?
South Ossetia has run its own affairs since fighting for independence from Georgia in 1991-92, in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
It has declared independence, though this has not been recognised by any other country.
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has vowed to bring South Ossetia and another breakaway region, Abkhazia, back under full Georgian control.
Why do Ossetians want to break away?
The Ossetians are a distinct ethnic group originally from the Russian plains just south of the Don river. In the 13th Century, they were pushed southwards by Mongol invasions into the Caucasus mountains, settling along the border with Georgia.

South Ossetians want to join up with their ethnic brethren in North Ossetia, which is an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation.

Ethnic Georgians are a minority in South Ossetia, accounting for less than one-third of the population.
But Georgia rejects even the name, South Ossetia, preferring to call it by the ancient name of Samachablo, or Tskhinvali, after its main city.
What triggered the latest crisis?
Tension has risen since the election of President Saakashvili in 2004. He offered South Ossetia dialogue and autonomy within a single Georgian state - but in 2006 South Ossetians voted in an unofficial referendum to press their demands for complete independence.
In April 2008 Nato said Georgia would be allowed to join the alliance at some point - angering Russia, which opposes the eastward expansion of Nato. Weeks later, Russia stepped up ties with the separatists in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
In July Russia admitted its fighter jets entered Georgian airspace over South Ossetia to "cool hot heads in Tbilisi". Occasional clashes escalated, until six people were reportedly killed by Georgian shelling. Attempts to reach a ceasefire quickly collapsed.
Could Russia become directly involved in war?
Russia insists it has been acting as a peacekeeper in South Ossetia, rejecting Georgian accusations that it has been supplying arms to the separatists.
However, it has vowed to defend its citizens in South Ossetia - of which there are many. More than half of South Ossetia's 70,000 citizens are said to have taken up Moscow's offer of a Russian passport.
Russia may view limited military intervention as less risky than recognising South Ossetia's independence, which could lead to all-out war with Georgia.
What about Georgia's links to Nato?
President Saakashvili has made membership of Nato one of his main goals. Georgia has a close relationship with the United States and has been cultivating ties with Western Europe.
There are those who believe that Mr Saakashvili may be hoping to draw Nato into a conflict with Moscow, making their alliance a formal one.
But analysts say it is difficult to imagine Nato allowing itself to be drawn into a direct conflict with its Cold War rival after managing to avoid that for so long.

As expected, the US claims that Russia is using "disproportionate" force and targeting "civilian areas."

My query is: Where in hell were these comments during the ceaseless Israeli bombardment of Lebanese civilians?! Or was that Israeli display of force very "proportionate?"

I wonder how Stalin would have reacted if he heard that his hometown was under attack by his own country (or former old country).

And no this is not war. War is when 2 parties of equal power clash. Otherwise its a genocide and Russians know, and everyone, that Georgia has no chance unless others intervene on their behalf.

Btw, isn't Georgia where Dubya had his watch stolen?

Thanks for the detailed work,Nocturnal.

Btw, that comparison looks like Bangladesh-India.
I think Russia can cover the whole of tiny Georgia inch by inch if they send thier sheer number of Tanks.

Its a total mis-match, but one Russia got to do for its own good.

Georgia is to blame in this case; they have a neocon president who was counting for US to rush to his rescue, and the icing on cake would be EU/NATO membership for Georgia.....

it is reassuring to know that our brothers and sisters, perhaps not so much of the latter, have been exercising their right to form opinions, and comment on world politics with the usual informed and learned brand of intellectual de rigueur.

i do rather like the comment about the bengali nation taking over the world with our kodal. please may i also add shutki maach to that array of sophisticated weaponry. it is liked to work very well against all nations other than the fins and certain alaskan indian tribes. i need some sleep now but do wake me up when you are about to start the revolution.

thanks.

Who else is he going to count on? There is only one other country that can match Russia.

In that part of the world, you either live under Moscow's good book or you become the "enemy" by allying yourself to western Europe and US. There is no in between. There is also many cold shouldering going on between Ukraine and Russia.

Point noted, Ukraine turned anti-Russian because the current govt got into power only after the US intervened through the Orange Revolution...

Nevertheless you dont see the Ukrain trying bomb and kill Russian citizens and thats why Russia doesnt bomb them in return.

Its one thing to politically support the US over Russia, its another thing to send your troops to kills Iraqis, try to start a war with Russia, and then beg the US to come and help them.

Some of the posts make the georgian prez sound like a spoiled brat who took liberty of its parents power. Only to find out......... (we'll find out how the parents decides to deal with this transgression).

Billah bhai, that third one was never proven and was recently admitted (without much noice or apology) to have been a 'mistake' by the admins. A 'mistake' that helped make some folks a LOT of money. Darn, we are hanging out with the wrong crowd.

South Ossetia is Georgian territory that broke free (without any international recognition) from Georgia back in 1990. It's not Russian territory. They have big majority of Russians in that area but UN explicitly recognises it as Georgian territory.

It's the same with the other territory.

I don't condone the bombing of innocent civilians but at the same time I don't trust the Russian media which hasn't changed one bit since Soviet era. That 2000 figure could have been as little as 200.

No one likes separatists. But what Georgia was trying to do was to reclaim its old lost territories, not take some more off Russia. The title of the thread itself is misleading.

No one in their right mind will try to bomb Russia. It's like Bangladesh trying to bomb India to reclaim West Bengal without any retaliation.

AFAIK, Ukraine doesn't have a separatist issues like Georgia and much of the hostility with Moscow is due to their attempt to get into NATO. Again, either you are Moscow's good friend or you are the enemy.
