Living abroad: Likes and Dislikes

Hi guys,

Wanted to know what your feelings are about living outside your country of birth. The focus is on the country and people where you are currently living. Please dont make it a forum of what i dislike and comparisons about Bangladesh.

Location: Greater London, UK

Time Living at current location: 8 years

Likes:
- Security
- Great public education
- Culture and Entertainment acitvities and place of interest
- Avaliabilty of different cuisines and products from all over the world
- Good transport and road facilities
- Good combo of public and personal holiday
- Weather
- Good balance to spend time for leisure and family
- Telecommunications, TV, internet, phones, water, energy and food are reasonablly priced
- Great levels of customer service normally
- People generally are friendly and like to make jokes
- Children get alot of discount and benefits
- Online services are efficient


Dislikes:
- Strict rules for children not attending class, so holidays are very expensive
- Hospitals can be hit and miss
- Too many people on benefits and lax immigration laws for such kind of people into the country
- Travelling by trains are damn expensive
- Watching live football games is a joke
- You have to pay alot of money to watch any international cricket game on tv live

Surprised took less than 8 years to come to this conclusion. How did you get there?

America is my home. I might have been born in Bangladesh but I feel no attachment to that country beside being a well wisher of it. Bangladesh is abroad to me and is nothing but an occasional vacation spot.

I know what you are trying to say. I know the type of ppl that spew those kind of things. That benefit system is also available to you should you need it. You immigrant having a better job does not make another immigrant any less.....

there will be another person in UK who will have problem with your immigrating there.. once you understand this psyche and the cycle then maybe you will know what's wrong with this type of thinking...

I do not dislike anything about USA to be honest. Spent over 20 years of my life here. Just like iDumb, I consider USA my home.

I usually don't debate with stupid people but sometimes on the odd occasion make the exemption.

I'm shocked Adamsu bro hasn't put Idumb on ignore list after he referred to his wife as a B.itch? Brother you do know that since that day he is after you? The only way to survive at BC is by putting two users on ignore list. If you go after them, they will take you down.. now or in the future! You put a little black mark on their reputation, you are basically done. Take it from someone who has been at BC more than 12+ years! And they have taken down many as tag team partners before. Thanks bro for your comments. But I dumb has not responded to me how he feels if someone refers to his Mother by that term.

I don't think of where I'm living at the moment as 'abroad'. It is my home now. I love everything about it.

I've visited my beloved Guyana only once since I left.

I still keep in touch with everyone via social media and up to date with the news via online papers.

I came to Canada as an Int'l student to do my bachelors 13 years ago and been living here since. Although it's pretty long time and I don't have any plan to go back to Bangladesh; I can't consider Canada my homeland. Most of my emotional attachments are still tied with Bangladesh.

Likes:
- Quality of education and employment opportunities at University level
- Fairness in finding work and during work
- Common nature to follow law
- People are ethically and morally pretty strong
- Flexible and attractive immigration policies
- The Govt. do seem to care general public and work for them
- Free health care
- Buying flexibility, variety of products etc.
- Cost of new/used cars
- Less traffic jams, roads/highways are smooth, nice & clean
- People are generally friendly, especially in smaller cities (as I live in one)
- Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to bring your own culture forth

Dislikes:
- Weather (it's Canada, what do you expect?) and its impact on everyday life
- Taxes are on the higher side
- Too many benefits for low-income individuals/families including new immigrants (I can elaborate on this if someone calls me names)
- Shortage of doctors, specialist and other medical professionals resulting in long waiting time
- Hockey/Baseball/Basketball vs Soccer/Cricket/Table Tennis
- Zero Bangladeshi vibe in my city
- Miss family adda, friends' get together
- Bangladeshis may be poor but can show utmost hospitality most times. Canadians are nowhere near to this culture.

that is surprising. from my limited experience with Canadians, they seem to be very genuine and warm.

I imagine if I am in trouble in the road of Dhaka/Toronto, I would have more help in the streets of Toronto than Dhaka.

Mufti bhaiya, I think Rosher bhaiya is talking about Canuck bhais and apus not offering anything to drink when visiting them at their homes. Versus bhais and apus of BD origin, even with limited or lower socio/economic backgrounds try their very best, are always hospitable, will offer you Chaa-biscuit.
Ohh, unless you go visit a Bong-head, then they will always offer you something + Kool-Aid.
It's a very cultural thing.

Road trouble, in Alaska for one broken person, 50 people will stop for you and create a highway jam...because otherwise they know you will freeze. Same with your tundra Canada, Reykjavik, etc. But yeah, in most cases anyone would stop and offer to help you in the west, and I am sure in the east(!)(Asia/Central/South America too) ...BD(not all, some) I am not sure.

*Murgi - Boro boro but with GMO - no deshi murgi taste.
*Deem Eggs - More white, less yolk, GMO - no taste in my omelet!
*Kacha Marich - Not jhaal enough
*Khashir Mangsho khub expansive per lbs...lamb/goat meat I mean

Thanks for sharing your views. Is medication free in Canada? Also which area do you live as I have an Uncle and they have an active Bangladeshi community in Toronto which is a big city.

How the quality of schools and is it free?

I find UK to be one of the most peaceful country to live in.

Not that I have experience of living in other countries, maybe because I got used to it?

Have been brought up in UK since age of 5/6.. only dislike is the weather...

Lack of Bodnas at friends'/work/public places. At home somehow manage with a plant watering can (small nozzle).
