Default sania in top 50

TENNIS
Sania poised to enter top 50

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, San Diego
Indian teenager Sania Mirza shocked Nadia Petrova on Wednesday, handing the fourth-seeded Russian a straight-set defeat in the 1.3 million-dollar WTA Tour tier one tournament here.

Mirza defeated Petrova 6-2, 6-1 to reach the third round.
Mirza, 18, won in just 53 minutes, but said she wasn’t surprised by the lopsided result.

Since turning pro in 2003, Mirza has a title under her belt, winning her hometown Hyderabad Open in February. She also beat reigning US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in Dubai in March.

Mirza will face Akiko Morigami of Japan in the third round. After advancing through the qualifying tournament, Mirza beat Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before facing Petrova.

Petrova, who played with her right forearm heavily strapped, was seeking her fourth consecutive quarter-final appearance. Instead, she left the court in tears.

Though Petrova took a step backward in her preparation for the US Open later this month, she didn’t consider it a setback of major proportions.

Have India actually won anything in hockey since the 1980 Moscow Olympics (boycotted by half the world) 25 years ago?

Wow !!! So BD is your measuring stick then in basketball. As India beat Bangladesh in basketball, therefore you came to conclusion that India must be very good in Basketball. Great logic !!!!

I also use the same logic when I discuss about my performace in local swimming competetion that I participated once. I was a good swimmer then. I did better than my friend Adib. Even though I was 19th (out of 20), my performance was much better tha Adib and I beat him by mighty 5 secs. In this that case my measuring stick is my friend Adib's performace here (not the one that won that d[]mn 1st price.!! )

Top 50? Nice! Looks like this girl has lots of potential. Good to see an asian tennis player doing well after Paes and Bhupathi.

Muslim clerics lash out at ‘half-naked’ Mirza
Muslim clerics sharply criticised Indian tennis star Sania Mirza on Friday for wearing short skirts on court, accusing the teenager of being a ‘corrupting influence on young women’.
‘Sania Mirza is a Muslim and she stands half-naked on the tennis court while playing, which is against Islam,’ Siddikulla Chowdhury, secretary of the Jamiat-Ulama-Hind Islamic movement in Kolkata, told AFP by telephone.
‘She is trying to ape some Western tennis players who dress in a similar way,’ said Chowdhury, whose group has a strong base in two eastern states.
‘The dress she wears on the tennis court not only doesn’t cover large parts of her body but leaves nothing to the imagination of voyeurs,’ another cleric, Maulana Hasheeb-ul-Hasan Siddiqui, told the Hindustan Times daily.

Sania smashes 'hurtful' sex quote

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has strongly denied saying she supports pre-marital sex after remarks attributed to her sparked protests. The Muslim player said her comments at a leadership summit in Delhi had been misquoted and that pre-marital sex was a sin Allah could not forgive. Mirza's effigy was burned amid protests in her home state of Andhra Pradesh. She was quoted as saying that whether before or after marriage, the most important matter was that sex was safe.

This is not the first controversy Mirza has been involved in since her rise to fame as India's leading woman tennis player. Security for her at a recent tournament in Calcutta was stepped up after rumours that a radical Islamic group had threatened to stop her playing in the tournament unless she changed her on-court dress.

In a statement issued in Hyderabad, Mirza said pre-marital sex could not be justified. She said she was upset that her image had been maligned by misquotes and that such a non-issue had become a controversy. BBC
