Default Why we need to hire Wasim Akram (bowling coach) - Article link

Our bowlers need to learn reverse swing and who would be a better bowling coach? We could have a reverse swinging firm system here like the SLA. With our Bangladeshi frames its almost impossible to produce tear aways like Lee and Akhter.

http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/engl...ry/219349.html

"This art has spread only because of Pakistani bowlers," he said. "Imran Khan taught me how to reverse swing the ball, I told Younis and we mastered it."

He said English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff learnt a lot from him while they both played county cricket for Lancashire in the late 1990s.

This is a direct quote from a BBC article.
"Not every single bowler can obtain reverse swing - the ball needs to be propelled above 80mph or thereabouts to make it move in the air."
I am not sure our medium pacers can achieve/generate that speed. Andy roberts will do fine for the time being. Akram may want a huge salary which may be wasteful for now.
wonderful article on swing bowling though. Very helpful for young bowlers.
What is a reverse swing?

I got a wrong impression after reading the headline thinking that somebody is requesting to get a national coach - searching for a replacement for Whatmore in Wasim Akram - Thank God that this is only a search for 'bowling coach', because it was Mr. Wasim Akram and his big reputation who was the main culprit in our hiring of the worst national coach since attaining test status - in Mohsin Kamal. I would not advise BCB to go to Wasim Akram again in this lifetime for any advise whatsoever (however, I would encourage players - emerging, national or others to go to him personally to ask for tips on bowling).

Thanks fwullah. I changed the headline to bowling coach.

Some of our bowlers can bowl in the 80s consistantly and therefore perfect prospects to be Reverse Swing artists.

Yes, reverse swing is an art that all bowlers cannot pick. It depends on action, wrist position and also the pace and delivery stride.
Taking Wasim Akram as the bowling coach will need to be judged seriously, also you have to consider the monetary aspect of things- we're already paying Dav a helluva lot of money and I'm sure Akram won't just volunteer his time. I have a feeling he would rather be a bowling coach for Pakistan, Australia and or any county teams.
Also bowling seems to be coming up pretty good- its just we have to be patient. We can't produce tearaway fast bowlers overnight. Also there aren't many cricketers with the built of some of these International "class" bowlers. So we need to look into that too!

wasim akram was kind of a genius and genius ppl never have been good teachers with few exceptions. What's wrong with Andy Roberts? He was a class bowler, one of the best of his time....

The plan is to have a good bowling attack by WC 07. The condition, the atmostphere, and the most experienced - local knowledge wise (both in BD and West indies) Andy Roberts is the perfect fit. He is the one who spotted Mash and groomed him had specific regime set up for him, ordered BCB not to over use him. What did BCB do? called up Mash early, played him until he could not play anymore (uver used him), broke down. Andy Roberts has agreed again to service us. This time we should listen to his advice. he also spotted Talha and other prospects.

Akram is happy in commentating games making alot of money and traveling. he will not even considered us with the salary offer we will have. The best he can give is a month or so in his off season. That would not be a permanent solution. So this would be a waste of time for the BCB officials to chase him around for his service. Unless BCB officials have other agenda like, personal shopping spree in the countries Akram would be making stops. i would rather take Simon Jones (while he is injured and cannot service England) and get him for a month. He does not have a big head on his shoulder like Akram. And he seems to be a good teacher. Ask the Aussies.

Our batting is the main problem now. With 2 inexperienced quick bowlers we did well but it was the lowest score of 86 which suggests that changes should be imminent. I am not sure whether Dav can teach our players to bat ... because he was not a master batsman himself and he is more of a facilitator and strategist rather than being a specialist batsman.

Subcontinent pitches have low bounce and our batsmen struggled but it was the spinners not the pacers that did the damage.

So i am not sure what Dav could do about it because he is not a specialist batting coach.

We do need a bowling coach but that's a luxury .... we must resolve the defficiency in our batting first and then we will score above 86 everytime we go out to bat.
