Default Bursting the Shakib Bubble

I posted this in another thread but its worth a discussion on its own.
----------

sorry to break the bubble. but Shakib is not the best. Here are my ratings;

Batting : C+ (Horrible technique for the sohrt and rising fast ball on the middle or leg, ok on the off side. He will never be a classical top four batsman.)
Bowling: B- (decent SLA -- nothing to write home about)
Fielding: B+ (good athletic fielder)
Captaincy: B (Introvert. looses temper when he bowls and a fielder misses. How well can he connect with others in the team with an inflated ego.)
Mental Strength : A+ (This is where he is clearly superior than everyone else. Strives for the best at every aspect. Best display temperment among all the current Bangladeshi players)

Disagree with Captaincy and batting: There's no one style of captaincy. Steve Waugh, as per Imran Khan, "seemed to be suffering from lockjaw" when he was roomed with him in NSW with the express intention of the former imparting captaincy wisdom to the latter. Waugh was inscrutable in the field but knew how to cuss a player out at the right times. And yet Waugh was quite successful. Every leader does not have to be a rah-rah type.

Batting: agreed his technique is not orthodox, but it is effective. Go and check his batting against Steyn & co in Saffers or his 100 against Pakistan in Pakistan or his innings in the WC against England in Barbados. He can handle bounce and pace in his own way. He'll be always more of a Ganguly type batter than a Tendu/Dravid type.

That's a very interesting observation. When he is getting regular five-fors irrespective of conditions, you have to back your claim with some constructive arguments. Care to explain your point?

What should be the grade of your opening post?

Miraz, perhaps because Shakib lacks a mystery delivery or is not a massive turner of the ball or gets ridiculous bounce? I think at the end of the day though, output is all that matters not style points.

Thank you thank you thank you. At least one other being on this board agrees that technique is overrated to some extent.

I'd like to know who is better. Vettori? Afridi? Any other spinning alrounder (captain)? Sanath? Name me one and do your grading, I will go from there.

There hasn't been any grading scale invented for Shakib as of yet. So give his A+ and move away.

That's interesting. Vettori has purposefully ignored the doosra, neither is he a bigger turner than Shakib. nor does he get extraordinary bounce. Yet he's definitely one of the best spinners after Murali. I rate him head and shoulder above the avarage spinner.

If Shakib continues as he's doing now, I see him easily successing Vettory as the best SLA.

Now that the Shakib bubble is busted it's going to take the whole Bangladesh cricket along with it.. eventually world cricket will also collapse leading to a long lasting recession..

I had the same type of rating that you have right now when he first came into the scene. I took some flak for it, but his steady improvement in all department since then has been nothing short of meteoric. Comparing him now to then is a pleasant surprise for me. I think you are judging him from 2006-7.

My ratings for what its worth :
Batting : A- ( I care not about technique if it fetches runs. He is still a bit suspect against fast bouncy balls leaving off stump like many other lefties. But, he makes up for it eventually by sticking around )
Bowling : A ( His biggest improvement. He has terrific command over his length and line, thus making it very difficult for batsmen to hit him. He spins the ball a lot more these days )
Fielder : A ( As good as any in BD camp )
Captaincy : Still an open book, but the indications are pointing towards right direction )
Mental Strength : Agree with you..

Didn't some Austalian ex player said shakib is the best finger spinner at the moment? Even though I don't buy that but he's definitely getting there if he can remain consistent. And I believe Shakib is definitely a Vettorri mold....bowls within himself with a lot of intelligence. Raw talent without proper temparament doesn't last long.....

sooner or later the lack of technique will catch-up with you. Shakib's batting lloks like Ganguly's more than Sehwag. A lot of ditermination and grit but lacking fundamentals. Like Ganguly, he will go through long bad patchs and will have hard time recovering form (when he hits a bad patch).

I think like Ganguly his only and key strength is his mind.

In any professional sports, if a captain is Mr. Nice all the time, he may not get the output from his players, thus he may not get the wins. Captaincy is a combination of hard and soft attitude which is subject to the situation and to that interacting person's mental stage or strength. At the end of every thing that you like or not, what matters is a win.
Just remember, Shakib is a new captain, still in a learning process.
What Shakib did in a month, our 'mega star' took five years.

But, unlike Ganguly, Sakib can walk into the team as a specialist spinner only. I do find some resemblance of Ganguly in Sakib's batting. Both struggle a bit against bouncy deliveries and both can punish the full ones on the off side. Ganguly was a lousy fielder though. Mentally if Sakib can be like anywhere close to Ganguly, then we are in safe hands. Ganguly was a good skipper too.

In my opinion, only Kowshik has the right personality for the captaincy. He never lost his temper, yet he has the perfect aggression of a pacer. He respects everyone in the team, at the same time he is determined to perform and win. He is nearly flawless in every department. Well liked by everyone.

However, luck may have dealt him a bad hand and he needs to wait for the right moment.
