England should win this match. Their bowling is just too good for these conditions. Aussies have a mountain to climb just to avoid the follow on. If England fails to win this match then they don't deserve to have the Ashes. Barring interference from the weather, I don't see the Aussies saving this match. I have seen enough of them this summer to see who has the better team. It clearly is England at the moment.

I thought the English had a chance when they thrashed BD so soundly. Despite the naysayers, BD isn't really that bad in Tests as they were made to look by England early in the summer. I told anyone who'd listen that rather a case of BD being rank bad, it was a case of England being way too good. Looks like the Ashes are providing the vindication of that. It's time for Freddie to come in tomorrow and clean up the tail. The ashes are there for the taking - will England grab em?

You stole the words right out of my mouth. I was going to write about our series against England and wanted to point out that we are not really that bad as England made us look. Also, the fact that we played in early summer, which is even more difficult a period to face these English bowlers, makes our performance look not so bad in hindsight. Agree with you 100%.
Your point earlier about Audi's : The new models are quite flashy contrary to what you said in comparison to bim's and merc's. It's true if you are talking about the older models. Anyway, just to let you know that S4 no match for M3

You are right. If England don't win this match then they don't deserve to win the Ashes.
Their achilles heal in the last two matches has been the Australian tail. With Gillespie not playing it should in theory be a bit easier to run through it. If England do struggle with the tail again then I will be highly displeased.
If England get an early wicket tomorrow morning, they should be looking to have Australia following on before lunch. There is a bit more bad weather forecast before this match it out, England have got to make sure they get these Australian innings out of the way as quickly as possible - which we all know they are capable of.
If the Australia of old were in the position of England, they would probably win by 9 wickets at least.

I think Gilchrist and Warne are the danger men for England if they build a partnership, it may rekindle Australia's hopes.

Really has nothing to do with Bangladesh's recent tour of England but the Ashes proves that England in the new Australia AND our debacle in the test series was against the best Test playing nation in the world and in their own backyard.
(let's hope the boys don't do a repeat performance in Sri Lanka)

If Gilchrist makes 100, and all the other batsmen 50 then Australia are still 78 runs behind on 1st innings.
They are in a big hole.

aussie team collapsing after defeat to bangladesh
just like pakistan when they lost to bangladesh in world cup.....
looks like any team that looses to bangladesh gets stuck with bad luck....
not sure about india, but after that match with NZ you could argue that way....

Australia end first innings on 218/10 and now have to face the follow on.
Lee made a great effort in the last wicket:
B Lee c Bell b SP Jones 47 44 5 3
He has been the best scorer of the Aussies and hit three sixes!
Now Australia need 259 to avoid losing by innings...

Just going back to the last time Australia followed on, Pakistan
won that game by an innings and 188 runs.

Steve Waugh shielded them all those years like a guardian angel.

I agree. Six wickets left, only 36 runs behind, Jones struggling, if Aus manage a lead in the 200 region, things could get very interesting.

gilly is a lost man atm, against flintoff, and i would bet my bottom dollar he coudlnt get 100 at the moment.
Warne very lucky with the bat and has some big time fluke shots.
this match is in the bag for england, and all that needs doin is the zip to be fastened because aussies have 6 wickets, left, over 3 daysof cricket left in the game, they cannot make a lead of more than 200.

Your very confident, Australia had 2 wickets left and almost reached the target of 100 runs. What makes you so sure that Australia can't set a target of 200 runs with 6 wickets remaining?

They can set a target of that, no doubt about it.
I would of much rather batted again for a few sessions, got a 450 lead or something then had two days and a bit to bowl Australia out. Victory would then be assured unless it rains.

Rob you are staring to think like a BD fan. We always think safety first - get the draw, if a win comes so be it. Vaughn's decision to enforce the follow-on says to the Aussies: "Right mate, we aren't scared of your bowling and reckon, even with Warney to face, we can knock off any runs you might put up". If Eng had batted on then all of a sudden any weather change would have left them vulnerable to the draw.

Not really. As Mike Brearly was saying during the lunch break, there's a high chance of showers on monday. Won't make much sense to have 3 odd wickets to whip off only to see the day washed away.
But after scoring 222/4 it will be interesting to see if England find themselves chasing a 300ish total in 4th innings. Tomorrow's play will be crucial. For me, Simon Jones will be the crucial man.

I guess we are all impressed by the good show of pride by the Australians after being forced to the follow-on, but I still think they have no chance to save this test:
they are at 222/4, let's be optimistic and say they could even close on a total of stg like 450 runs. This would give England a 200 runs target, which they could easily score.
I guess it was right by Vaughan to enforce the follow on as there was a chance to reduce the Aussies to a humiliating (and historical) defeat by innings. It would have been a triumph for the English, so why not trying?

I just want to win!!!!
I couldn't give a flying toss how we do it just as long as we go to the Oval 2-1 up. If we don't, Rob will be one pissed off man.
I just sense a 2nd innings collapse

i think australia was just touch unlucky so far. their premier bowler in mcgrath got injured before 2nd test and since then england have got a tight leash on them. ponting run out was unfortunate, he was looking to get a big score. both katich and clarke looking good as well....... yes a australian win is very much possible if they can get 150 lead somehow. england have a history of nervousness against warne
