Default Disabling User Ranking System

I noticed moderators trying to attract members attention about spamming the forum with frequent one-line posts and threads.

Do you Guys have any plan to disable the User Ranking system? I think street cricketer, test cricketer etc. user ranking is the single most motivating factor for frequent one-line posts. Just the number of posts below the Member name is good enough for indicating the activity level of that member.

I am not sure. Just the post count itself can be motivating enough. Having a 5000 or 10000 posts gives you a huge seniority that will motive those who abuse today. Whatever you do, the person is the same, thus the action may remain the same.

Interesting Thread.

1. Can we limit the # of post that one can post each day?

2. Can we do the ranking base on all these four components?
a) Total # of posts
b) Duration of membership
c) # of Article published in BC
d) Selection by the Elite and/or General Public

3. Weighting Mechanism with some logic behing it. So that one-liner message will not add up to the total # of post.

4. May be some explanation what constitute a 'one-liner'. For example if we agree with a message and reply with a thumbs up, does that qualify as a one liner?

I guess it depends on situation. The example you gave is one of such situation. Also, during match time, we all express our joy and frustration with one-liners or with symbols.

One-liners itself should not be a problem unless someone tend to make a career out of posting one-liners. Usually you can tell when a member is trying to increase number of posts by one-liners. Career "one-linists" usually post one-line messages all the time and all they do is to agree/disagree with other people’s opinion or posts meaningless/redundant comments.

I guess most irritating thing is when someone opens a thread with a one-line post. According to my observation, Opening thread with one line is one definite criterion which usually moderators looks for identifying one-line tendency.

As a user you people should already realise which person is a one-line specialist and who isnt. no?

Although, we as moderators, discourage people from making content free posts, we cannot always delete or penalize users for making such posts.

Fazal's 3rd idea will be very difficult to implement as we cannot clearly define which one-liner is playing by the rules and which isnt.

The elite members will always stand out from heavy spamming users there is no doubt about that. A user is respected and recognized by how he presents his views in his posts and he will be respected regardless of what his user rank or his post number is.

I know I drifted off-topic somewhat. But to sum it up... we dont want to enforce any such system that will lead to inhibition of posting from our members. We have to take the bad with the good and we are happy to admit that the good to bad ratio is still substantially high. We will deal with the issue on a case by case basis and will hope for the cooperation of our members.

There is no need to make things complicated. Everything is about "netiquette" - So the "oneline" thing is a synonym for all other annoying things that serve no useful purpose other than annoyances for other users.

Any old usenet hand probably remembers the oft repeated "netiquettes" - these are common courtesy guidelines.

The one relating to "one liners" fall under "Respect for other people's time and bandwidth"

Examples:

1) DON'T include the entire contents of a previous posting in your reply.

(1) DO cut mercilessly. Leave just enough to indicate what you're responding to. NEVER include mail headers except maybe the "From:" line. If you can't figure out how to delete lines in your mailer software, paraphrase or type the quoted material in.

(2) DON'T reply to a point in a posting without quoting or paraphrasing what you're responding to and who said it. Reason: a dozen postings may occur between the original message and your reply. At some sites your reply may get there before the original.

(2) DO quote (briefly) or paraphrase. If the original "Subject:" line was "Big dogs" make sure yours says "Re: Big dogs". Some REPLY functions do this automatically. By net convention, included lines are preceded by ">" (greater-than signs). Some mail editors and newsreaders do this automatically. Others require you to do it manually or set the "indent character" to ">".

(3) DON'T send a message saying "Why doesn't anybody say anything about X?" or "Who wants to talk about X?"

(5)DON'T SEND A MESSAGE IN ALL CAPS. CAPITALIZED MESSAGES ARE HARDER TO READ THAN LOWER CASE OR MIXED CASE.

(9) DON'T make a posting that says nothing but "Me, too." This is most annoying when combined with (1) or (2) above. Ditto for "I don't know."

Well... there are two seperate issues b.bangla is talking about:

1. The problem of 'One-Liner' posts.
2. The simplicity of the user ranking system.

Even though bb links these two things straightforward... I don't agree thats always the case. Some of the users are by nature 'One-liners' and yes that is a problem. Often these 'One-line-threads' target to create an exciting threads or arguments.... and because it is easy to create a controvercy by saying less tharn more..those members tend to do that. We try to discourage it if the issure raised gets too useless.. other members can also ignore it and refrain from replying to it.

And about the simplicity of the user-ranking system (which, in bb's view is oversimplified)... well, I have nothing much to say. This ranking is merely a representation of a user's posting frequency and doesn't necessarily represent the user's quality as a member. We do have some very good posters/members who post very infrequently and because they tend to make 'less in quantity but more in quality' posts.. their ranking is lower than many. IMO....Let's not take this user-ranking too seriously.

Just a thougth: now about make the user ranking based on both post count and time interval?

for example, club cricket is 50 post now. how about making it, 50 post + 2 month of registration. if we consider only time, it will make everyone inactive users senior. and post count promots one liner or quoting someone's post with an emoticons.

User Ranking system is nothing but a fun way of reflecting the Post Count. It serves no other practical purpose. Post count on the other hand, however, is a handy forum stat and somehow reflects the participation of a member in the forum.

Disabling the rank will serve no good to curve the so-called one-liners if not the post count is also disabled concurrently.

And disabling the post count means depriving the members/readers of a handy, at times the only, tool to get some idea about the poster. I don't think we'd like to do that.

I know a forum where they used to use a complicated "Karma" system. Your ranking would depend on your Karma points. I don't recall the exact details as it has been quite a while they took this system off, but here's the gist of it:

1. 2 points for a full profile
2. 3 points for a portrait
3. Each guestbook entry = 0.05 karma point
4. 1 login per day counts as a Unique login (1 karma point)
5. Each post = 0.01 karma point
6. Offtopic posts (equivalent to our forget cricket) do not qualify for karma points, however will be credited towards your total posts statistics

I like this user ranking system. So don't agreed with you. This user ranking system attracts users to post as I think.

I don't think it matters. Someone can post 2000 but having the ranking of "Cricket Legend" isn't a patch on being a moderator.

I think the ranking name should change. 2000+ would make you an ashraful. >1000 will make you habibul. If you just registered without a post being made you are Khaled Mahmud - in the team no use. You can also be Alok Kapali... have potential to post a lot but didn't yet.

Finally if you break all records and go above everyone you are a chinaman.

That's my suggestion. BYE

lol orpheus, thats the best sugestion anyone have come up with in this thread.:P
anyways, i agree with agentsmiths (rubu's) idea of giving importance to the time interval. it shows the experience the poster has in this forum in terms of the discussions and board rules perhaps. But there should a minumum number of posts made by the poster for him/her to be considered. someone who registered the day banglacricket opened and never visited the site ever again wouldnt be given a 'test cricketer' title in that way.

Great Idea by Orpheus. But I see some few problems though. What Happens if Shams. Split_fire gets the ranking of "Rana", I get the ranking of "Alok Kapalia",
rubu get the ranking of "Tushar", Oracle get the ranking of "Faisal", Tehsin gets the ranking of "Tapash" (after his last performance), BangladeshFan gets the ranking of "JO", howzatt! gets the ranking of "ChaCha" ?

There will be 3rd world war .. I guess.

In that case, mr-khan and myself SHOULD get the ranking of "Biddyut" (Shahriar Hossain) without a doubt!
