Is technical director more effective than head coach?

Ravi Shastri and Khaled Mahmud both are technical directors and mediocre players. But it seems like teams gel together under them more than other head coaches. They seem to form good partnerships with captains eg Shastri with Kohli and Shujon with Mash/Shakib. The point of this thread is to discuss that if technical director with specialist batting/bowling/fielding coaches is more effective method than employing a head coach.

Both Shastri and Sujon letting captain/senior players to dictate the game plan and XI selection. This should motivate the seniors to take more responsibility, while the coaching staff focus on helping junior players with technical issues.

Downside is that so much emphasis on personal preferences of the captain can often demoralize the rest of the team (which I think happening in case of India). But then again, the same thing happen when personal preferences of a strong head coach dictates game plans and XI selection, without having much say from players (which was the case with Hathuru).

For now, having Mash at the helm, it may work out well for us. But when Shakib takes over, I will like to see another strong head coach dictating and guiding him. Shakib is very aggressive as a player, but very defensive as a captain - he needs to change there. Also, he can be sometimes very biased towards certain players - need a coach to keep him in check.

Ravi Shastri mediocre player?

Success for Bangladesh in the tri series was always on the cards. Sth that happens when someone who has been source of tension in a dressing room leaves. Players play with a lot of freedom, even specialist coaches will have a lot more say in training, tactics etc.

Bangladesh is flourishing under such circumstances.

I think BCB need to think long and hard abt this. This mode with Sujon as director may work. But they still may need to get hold of a more competent individual to contribute at a higher level. For example: If they can get hold of Gary Kirsten as a consultant, who knows!

Exactly....too early to claim victory.

Historically speaking our players (specially senior players) are not very well known for hard working and famous for favoritism. Let's wait for one good away series against a good team and let's wait a little longer...because I have serious doubt if this kind of high energy performance can be sustainable for long run.

I dont think any coach's plans would have worked in SA. They were in a rampant mood. But at least we could have been a bit more competitive and shown fight.

We didnt because the dressing room was divided, demoralized, without spirit. And the coach knew he was quitting so probably didnt care or try.

By the time the Indian tour of SA is over this technical director role might come under scrutiny. Judging by the comments on Cricinfo, social media, Indian fans are not happy with Kohli, nor are they comfortable with Shastri playing a cheerleader role.
