রাজধানীর শাহবাগ। চারপাশে প্রতিবাদী মানুষের ঢল। সময় তখন বিকেল সাড়ে পাঁচটা। যুদ্ধাপরাধী কাদের মোল্লার ফাঁসির দাবিতে চলছে তৃতীয় দিনের মতো প্রতিবাদ কর্মসূচি। সেখানে উপস্থিত হলেন আওয়ামী লীগের যুগ্ম সাধারণ সম্পাদক মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ। ঘোষণা করা হলো, আন্দোলন ও প্রতিবাদের সঙ্গে সংহতি জানিয়ে বক্তব্য দেবেন তিনি। এ সময় সভাস্থলে শুরু হলো হইচই। ঘটনার প্রত্যক্ষদর্শী সমাজতান্ত্রিক ছাত্রফ্রন্টের সাধারণ সম্পাদক প্রণব দেব রায় প্রথম আলো ডটকমকে বলেন, হানিফ বক্তব্য দেবেন, এমন ঘোষণার সঙ্গে সঙ্গেই উপস্থিত জনতা প্রতিবাদ জানান। তাঁরা ‘সরকারের সমঝোতার রায় জনগণ মানে না’, ‘আপসের রায় মানি না’ বলে স্লোগান দিতে থাকেন। এ সময় আওয়ামী লীগের নেতা হানিফ হাত নেড়ে জনগণকে থামানোর চেষ্টা করেন। কিন্তু জনগণের স্লোগান বাড়তেই থাকে। শুধু কাদের মোল্লা নয়, সব যুদ্ধাপরাধীকে ফাঁসি দিতে হবে বলে স্লোগান দিতে থাকেন তাঁরা। একপর্যায়ে সেখানে দাঁড়ানো আওয়ামী লীগের নেতার আশপাশে বেশ কয়েকটি পানির বোতল ছোড়া হয়। ঘটনার একপর্যায়ে ছাত্রলীগ ও যুবলীগের কয়েকজন নেতাকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে সভাস্থল থেকে সরে যান মাহবুব উল আলম হানিফ। বক্তব্য না দিয়েই শাহবাগ থেকে চলে যান তিনি http://www.prothom-alo.com/detail/da...07/news/327555

It's safe to assume that all of the remaining verdicts have also become a foregone conclusion in light of the Shahbagh protests. This will also lead to the AL and its allies returning to power (but AL will lose many seats, many to its own rebel candidates, with JP picking up a dozen more) because not only people know more about BNP-Jamaat because of the ICT, but won't risk the process being stopped or sabotaged. Yes, the issue is THAT important to so many of our newly registered and young voters. BNP will gain many seats, thanks mainly to the negative voting gifted by AL's misuse of power, but fall well short of the majority required to form a government.
Jamaat is to BNP what Israel is to the USA: not the 51st, 52nd or 53rd state of the US, but the US being 51st district of Israel.

Mobarak HossainStar Online ReportThe prosecution submitted formal war crimes charges against Mobarak Hossain, known as Awami Leaguer, to the International Crimes Tribunal on Monday. Sahidur Rahman, prosecutor of the case, told the International Crimes Tribunal-1 that Mobarak has been accused in five types of crimes against humanity that he had committed during the country's Liberation War in 1971. The charges are killing, mass killing, abduction, repression and confinement. The ICT-1 fixed March 11 to decide whether it would accept the charges against Mobarak. The tribunal took the move, after the prosecutor informed the ICT-1 that he had submitted the formal charges to the registrar office of the tribunal in the morning. Read More In Daily Star

Delawar Hossain Sayedee Star Online ReportVerdict in a war crimes case filed against Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee will be delivered on Thursday. The International Crimes Tribunal-1 fixed the date on Wednesday. "The judgement has already been prepared. Let the matter be fixed for tomorrow for the judgement," ICT-1 Chairman ATM Fazle Kabir told the court. Sayedee is facing 19 charges of crimes against humanity, including looting, killing, arson, rape and religious conversion, which were allegedly committed by him during the Liberation War in 1971. 19 cases against Sayedee, unbelieveable. I used to respect him and listen to his sermons at times in london. I think most people in sylhet or the sylheti's here in london will go crazy after they hear the verdict. I am very shocked and let the right verdict be heard, Allah knows the best.

দেলাওয়ার হোসাইন সাঈদীজামায়াতে ইসলামীর নায়েবে আমির দেলাওয়ার হোসাইন সাঈদীকে সর্বোচ্চ শাস্তি মৃত্যুদণ্ড দেওয়া হয়েছে। মুক্তিযুদ্ধকালে মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের মামলায় আট ও ১০ নম্বর অভিযোগ প্রমাণিত হওয়ায় বিচারপতি এ টি এম ফজলে কবীরের নেতৃত্বে তিন সদস্যের আন্তর্জাতিক অপরাধ ট্রাইব্যুনাল-১ এ রায় দেন। এটি একাত্তরে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ চলাকালে সংঘটিত মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধের মামলার তৃতীয় ও এই ট্রাইব্যুনাল থেকে দেওয়া প্রথম রায়। রায় ছিল ১২০ পৃষ্ঠার। সাঈদী ছিলেন রাজাকার বাহিনীর সাধারণ সদস্য বেলা ১১টা ১০ মিনিটে বিচারপতি এ টি এম ফজলে কবীরের নেতৃত্বে তিন সদস্যের ট্রাইব্যুনাল এজলাসে বসেন। ১২০ পৃষ্ঠার রায় পড়ার শুরুতেই বিচারপতি এ টি এম ফজলে কবীর বলেন, ‘দেলাওয়ার হোসাইন সাঈদীর পরিচয় সারা দেশের মানুষ জানেন। কিন্তু তাঁর বর্তমানের যে পরিচয়, সে পরিচয়ে আমরা কোনো বিচার করছি না। ১৯৭১ সালে তাঁর বয়স ছিল ৩০ বছর। সাক্ষীদের সাক্ষ্য থেকে জানা গেছে, তিনি রাজাকারদের কোনো কমান্ডার ছিলেন না। তিনি রাজাকার বাহিনীর একজন সাধারণ সদস্য ছিলেন। উর্দু ভাষা জানার কারণে পাকিস্তানি সেনাদের সঙ্গে তাঁর ঘনিষ্ঠ সর্ম্পক তৈরি হয়। তাই তিনি পাকিস্তানি বাহিনীর সঙ্গে প্রতিটি অভিযানে অংশ নিতেন। তাঁর গ্রাম ছিল পিরোজপুরের সাউদখালিতে। তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে যারা সাক্ষ্য দিয়েছেন, তাঁরা ওই গ্রামের নিরীহ সাধারণ মানুষ। তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে রাষ্ট্রপক্ষে ২৮ জন সাক্ষ্য দিয়েছেন। আসামিপক্ষে সাক্ষ্য দিয়েছেন ১৭ জন। সাক্ষীদের সাক্ষ্য পর্যালোচনা করে আমরা রায় ঘোষণা করছি।’ শেষ খবর পাওয়া পর্যন্ত রায়ের প্রথম অংশ পড়ছেন বিচারপতি আনোয়ারুল হক। More >>

So may young lives unnecessarily being lost to protest the verdict against a Razakar. Life is so cheap in our country. Regardless of their political affiliation, nobody deserves to die on the street. Why can't police detain them and hand out justice in the court of law?
