BCB is considering Kapali???
Am I wrong, or is this young man still a teenager? We worry about Bashar not being able to handle the pressure of Captaincy without affecting his form. What about Kapali?
At least make a captain out of someone who has played international cricket 3-4 years, understands tactics, bowler rotation, has the respect of teammates etc. That man is Bashar. Kapali would make a good deputy.

Both Hannan and Alok raise the potential problem of conflicting with our 'Boro Bhai' culture.

WTF IS BORO BHAI....I think Alok handles pressure well but that still doesn't mean he would make a good captain....my vote is stuck between Sumon and Alok

Before we get too excited
I would just like to point out that newspaper reports in BD are not to be trusted!

Kapali = media + Ashraful = GRRRRR.
I think the media are out to destroy Kapali's career - just like they were doing it on Ashraful.
Remember a nice name "Naimur Rahman Durjoy" - our beloved MORX?
:P:P:P
Durjoy was always mentioned like - the future captain of Bangladesh - because he has the most matured head in his generation of young cricketers.
After the maiden season / year of International cricket, we have understood how good a captain he is. The media is now going after Kapali - the same way they went after Durjoy.
My logical assessment on Kapali is - (as some of you have shown it) although he is now a valuable player for the Bangladesh National team, there is a possibility that he may not be a good test class batsman in the future. Then we will go back to our theory of "one day specialist player = Naimur Rahman = Khaled Mahmud = Alok Kapali = captain which means yet again we might face a similar problem that we are facing now - the loss of a good test player to the captain in the test side.

Lets consider what makes a good captain in the Bangladeshi context (not in any order):
1. Performance (automatic place)
2. Experience
3. Maturity
4. Boro Bhai (james: it is a cultural term referring to respect for elders)
5. Leadership
Taking all these into consideration, the best choice is Habibul Bashar. Rafique comes to mind as well.
Kapali needs at least another 2 years. Just for the sake of it, I would like to throw in Mashrafe's name. After another 2 years or so, he might not be too bad a candidate eh?
The problem with debating about picking a captain is that we really need to know the players on a personal level. A great captain has to have that certain "something" (a nice mix of leadership, brains and guts) in them which doesnot just come with experience, they are naturally equipped with it.

Fast bowlers have to have a little fire in their belly, temper and temperament to go with it... Look at D.K.Lilee, Caddick, Safraz Nawaz. Not guys one would bring to sunday tea party with mumsie.

Pompous
You stated five attributes that a captain needs. I agree with you. But when suggesting names (Bashar and Rafiq) you are unfortunately only looking at the first two, performance and experience. Just being old or playing for a long time doesn't make someone mature, nor does it make him a good leader. And the Boro Bhai factor, I think we should start moving away from it slowly.

And I agree with you Unfortunately for me, as a fan, who at the best of times watches the games on TV, and so has very little idea about the personal attributes of our players, the only thing left to do is speculate. And I do that with abandon!

Fire in the belly is great for a fast bowler i just don't think someone like that should be captain. I just jumped to conclusions with the bouncers he bowls and how he threw the stumps down at the other end only for the ball to go for four and Pakistan to win the test

did u guyz ever think about giving back the captancy to mashud again...if he still plays and manages the team good??...But I guess we need either a very good spinner and may be a very good third seamer( may be a good all rounder will be plus)

BangladeshCricket,
I would suggest that you read the Enquiry Committee Report (link on front page) if you haven't already.

the enquiry committee was set-up post world cup by the BCB to probe into the debacle. It is the most comprehensive diagnostic report to date about all issues related ot our performances or lack of it in the world cup and the state of our cricket (in general). Our very own Sham had a few things to do with it too. In a sentence, Mashud is overwhemingly found on the wrong side, and thus his future claims to skipperdom should be viewed with extreme reservation.

Thanks Pompous!
Yes, the Enquiry Committee comprised former BCCB President Cmdre Mujibur Rahman and retired Secretary Syed Shamim Ahsan right after the World Cup. The report they submitted to the BCB made headlines because of its comprehensive diagnosis of BD cricket and the boldness of its assertions.
Now that some time have passed since the whole enquiry committee hoopla, I might right something on my dealings with the committee and the experience in general soon.

Looking at the report,
I just realized that the annextures are missing. I'll try to get a hold of them and put them on soon so you can all see exactly who the committee interviewed during the course of its investigations.

Quote:
Bangladesh losing to Kenya disappointed cricket lovers in this country. Bangladeshi sports reports who were present at the ground squarely blamed Pilot's captaincy for the defeat. The Committee at length interviewed some reporters and senior players of the team and established the following facts:
1. Night before the Kenya match, Pilot was seen outside the hotel well after midnight.
2. Pilot dropped three regulation catches in the match.
3. Pilot did not bring the fast bowlers towards the end of Kenya's innings, which is the universal practice, thus allowing Kenya to pile up more runs than they should have.
4. Kenya had much to gain by beating Bangladesh, as it would strengthen their claim to attain 'Test status'.
From above, it appears that Pilot's conduct and captaincy do raise questions about his motive. BCB may probe further the Kenya match and get to the bottom of this unfortunate defeat.
|
I was looking at the 4 'points' that the ‘committee’ came up with to allege against Pilot..
1) staying out late - isn't that up to individual's choices.
2) dropping 3 'regulation' catches - everyone drops or midfields or miss a easy ball. Is this such a high crime? What’s the point here? Did pilot do it day after day??
3) didn't bring medium bowlers at the end - doesn't the captain in the field makes that decision? Right or wrong, sometimes we the spectators make statements like ‘this or that would have worked’ – can this be in an official statement. Is this an enquiry committee consisting of only street-smart fans?
4) Kenya's 'test status'!! - this is the most ridiculous point. what does Kenya’s bid for 'test status' has anything to do with Pilot?? Was pilot in a 'mission to stop Kenya' from gaining test status??
Looks like some typical Bangladeshi 'officials' looking for a fall guy and doing their so called 'enquiry'. huh..

Say,
Two things:
1. The point about Pilot staying up late, that is not an individual's choice when you are on tour. There is a curfew enforced by the manager that Pilot violated, that too the night before an important game!
2. The other points that were mentioned were allegations against Pilot made by other members of the team, officials and journalists that accompanied the team to South Africa. The committee merely mentioned the allegations and said that perhaps the BCB might want to look into these matters. The committee was not investigating Pilot's match-fixing allegations so they referred the allegations to the BCB.
Also, about Kenya's Test status, let me just say this. They needed to beat us to guarantee entry into the supersixes. Getting to the supersixes would strengthen their claim to Test status. So could they not have paid our captain off? Is it that far-fetched? I am not saying that they did. I also don't believe that Pilot fixed the match. But if such allegations are made, wouldn't you rather bring them up than sweep them under the carpet, especially after the way cricket has been hit by match-fixing in recent years?

I raised the same questions before too. The only valid point is his staying out late at night right before a match. That is unpardonable for a captain.
The other points shouldn't be raised in an 'official' report without back-ups. Otherwise, it's just another tabloid speculation.
