Top Ten Biggest ODI Upsets

Cricinfo published the top ten list of biggest ODI upset.
Including infamous World Cup defeat to Canada, Bangladesh is involved in 4 out of the top 10 ODI upsets.
Ofcourse, Bangladeshs' win against World Champion Australia is marked as the #1 ODI upset of all time. It is the only upset done by batting second.

i can't see why 'upset 3' is an upset.

One important way 'upset 1' is different from others is that in most of the cases there were unforced debacles of batting of the stronger team, whatever the reason is. But in BD-Aus case, BD made Aus to give in.

i watched '83 WC final couple of times. I think i could not make my point well.

India beat WI and Aus in the group matches, and Eng in the semi final before beating WI again in final. If a weaker team beat a stronger team in final, can we call it an upset?

One need to come up with a definiton of 'upset' before catagorizeing all these ten matches as the biggest upsets.

India beat WC from complete underdog and that is the reason of the upset. WI, the last 2 times WC champion at that time was supposed to be invincible. I was thinking it to be the 2nd upset not 3rd.

Did you guys notice that bangladesh is actually the BIGGEST gaintkiller? appears in the list 4 time.

well, once in the receiving end but did appears the maximum 4 times.

another important thing is that Bangladesh's win against australia is the only instance of batting 2nd.

that was also the first time india ever beaten windies.. i mean the group match where yashpal sharma was among the runs..

The Indians beating WI was a biger upset than number 1 or number 2. The indians had won17 games since entering ODI cricket and the WI team of thr 80's were unbeatable so they should have beaten India in a WC final, regaurdless how India made that far.

1,2 show a team declining in its fortunes being chalenged by a team with decent players where everything clicked for them.

feisal, you're not right. India beat WI right before WC 83 at Guyana where Kapil made a 38 ball 72 against Holding-Roberts-Marshall. One could call this one an upset.(ODI # 191) But people tend to remember only WC matches. And also India beat Aus, NZ, Eng, between 1980-WC 83. (Dont underestimate Hadlee's NZ back then)

So my point is India was like what NZ is right now and If NZ beat Aus it couls never be an upset.

In 1983, West Indies was the strongest team of its time. It was as invincible as the current Australian team, in both forms of the game.
India, on the other hand, was a very weak team in ODI. in fact, ODI was not at all popular in India at that time.

India had toured west Indies just before the World cup. Although India lost test and ODI series there, they gained valuable batting practice against the fearsome west indian pace attack. They even managed to beat West Indies in an ODI at Berbice.

So, by the time the World cup began, india were well prepared. Still, their World cup and ODI record was so poor that no one expected them to do much. Their win against West Indies in the final was the biggest upset in ODI history at that time, because no one even imagined that West indies could lose their World Cup title in the final.
