It is always an honour to lead the country: Mortaza
TigerCricket.com Report
23-June-2009

DHAKA: Quotes from newly appointed Bangladesh skipper Masrafe Bin Mortaza, who becomes the sixth Test captain for the Tigers, his deputy Shakib Al Hasan and predecessor Mohammad Ashraful after Mortaza and Shakib had been officially presented to the media today.

Masrafe Bin Mortaza

(His feelings)
Definitely this is a great feeling. It is always an honour to lead the country. I agree that this is a difficult time but I am very optimistic that things will turn for the better.

(Whether he was prepared to step in)

As a senior player of the side you have to be ready for taking up the responsibility. It is true that the coach and the captain has to face the music most of the times when the team underperforms. Who ever got the job he had to do it and I accept that.

(On the fact that he becomes the first bowler to captain Bangladesh)

Maybe it’s a different thing, a fast bowler captaining the side, in Bangladesh cricket but I have captained Abahani (his club side in the Dhaka Premier Division) this season and not thinking of the role as any different. Just got to go out there and think of my bowling and also about leading the side. I think I will enjoy it.

(On how he’ll overcome his relative lack of experience of captaining sides)

Well I don’t have much experience of captaining a side apart from with Abahani and I never had any idols as captain. But I will approach it based on my eight-year experience of international cricket. When it will come to bowling changes I will try to use those who I think would do the job in a certain situation because a bowler will not click everytime.

(What he reckons as the grey area for Bangladesh)

I think it is confidence mentally. We are a capable team but our confidence level is not up there all the time. We brought pressure on ourselves by not scoring enough runs against Ireland in the World T20. We were not confident in our ability and we lost. Against a better team I am sure our approach would have been more positive.

(On how he would approach criticism)

You can not avoid criticism. It will be there in everything you do. I try to think positively and not dwell too much on criticism.

(What he takes from Ashraful’s captaincy)

We have had some very good games under Ashraful’s captaincy. In certain situations he had taken some fine decisions. You can always take the good things and I will do that also. He always backed himself to do something whether it was with the bat or ball.

(On reports of indiscipline in the side)

I don’t think we have any discipline problems in the side. Everyone knows how to behave at this level and knows what to talk and what not to talk. I am sure discipline will not be problem in the future also.

(How he thinks Shakib would fare if he has to take up captaincy in case of an injury to him)

A player can get injured any time but if that happens and Shakib has to take over then I’m sure he’ll do a fine job. He is mature, positive and can motivate the team. And he is a top cricketer.

(On Ashraful)

I had said this when we returned from England. He is a special player. For example Sachin Tendulkar is someone the opposition fear whether he is scoring or not scoring. Ashraful is something similar for Bangladesh. He has won us games which we might not have if Ashraful wasn’t there. I will show the same faith in him which he had on me as captain. He would make me bowl extra overs and bring me on whenever he felt the team needed something. He had backed me all the way.

(Looking ahead)

One Twenty20 loss has made a lot of difference. Now it’s time to look ahead. We need a good showing in the West Indies and Zimbabwe and it is up to me to inspire the boys so that we can bring out the best in us.

Shakib

(How he takes this role)

First of all I am a player and my main focus will be to do well as a cricketer. Then it will be vice captaincy.

(Whether leadership will be tough to deal with)

We have a leadership group of four or five players and I am one of them. So I don’t think the role will be much difficult for me to perform.

Mohammad Ashraful

(On the captaincy change)

I have congratulated both Masrafe and Shakib. The leadership is in good hands and I am sure the team would do well under them. Masrafe and I started off as Bangladesh Under 17 mates and he is a great friend. I wish him all the best and he can be sure of total support from my end.
