Franchise-based four-day tournament-2012
2nd 4-day league set for Dec 24
Sports Reporter
The inaugural edition of the franchise-based four-day tournament, the second longer-version competition in the country after the National Cricket League (NCL), is likely to start from December 24.
Four franchises will represent four zones in the competition and three companies have already bought the rights of the three franchises, while the fourth one will be run by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) if ultimately no one comes forward to buy it. . . . http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesig...php?nid=261288

Only 3 matches for every team is really not enough. But good to see it is finally happening. Hope next year BCB will increase matches and teams as well if possible.

Should happen after BPL so that our team is ready for Sri Lanka test series. Its sad we're not focusing on the longer version and sad we don't have pace academies.

I hope it happens before the SL tests and ALL our national and A players participate. I would like to see what Ashraful can do as well.

3 matches is better than zero matches, and its not really that many fewer than other teams. We sound like everyone is playing 30 FC domestic matches a year and that just isn't true. What we lack in is overall quality (of facilities, play, and players) and the fact that we play Tests after 15 month breaks in between.

wonderful initiative. I like this in addition to NCL. Top performers from NCL, all the national bound players +A + Academy players should be considered. 4 teams means the top 50 players from the country gets to participate. Wonderful Idea a couple of green pitches would help.
performance here means you have a great shot at making the Test Team...

another reason why I love this initiative because now there are many players who play in the NCL and do not ever get a chance in National/A Team or whatever, at least now it will motivate players to do better so even if you can't make the national team, you can push to be picked by a franchise team(which should pay you more money than what you already get playing at the NCL level). It should increase competitiveness.

good to see it finally come to fruition, as said a final would have made it better. 3 matches doesn't seem so many but add it to the NCL matches and it's ok.

Idea of this tourney is really good. If they can maintain and add few things this will turn out to be a good tourney.
1. Arrange this tourney when all national players are available.
2. Add a final, it will create lot of enthusiasm.
3. Allow one foreign pacer per team.
4. Give highest priority to this tourney. More than B P L as well.

According to today's Prothom Alo, there will be 4 franchise. Northern, Southern, Eastern and western. As far as I know, basically all the divisions will be shuffled to form those zones. Raj + Rangpur =Northern. Sly +Ctg =Eastern. Khulna + Barisal =Southern. Then how will be the western zone formed? To me middle zone suits well with Dhaka.

It would be better if there was 5 teams such as Southern, Eastern, Northern, Western and Central zone.

its a pretty good tournment: NCL then this tournment sounds good, should happen every year.
the NCL should take place first and then the best players should be selected for their district.

I've always fantasized about our regional teams having historically appropriate, rather than random and plagiarized names. How about :
1) Dhaka Metropolitans (for Dhaka Metro).
2) Dhaka Freedom Fighters (for Dhaka Division).
3) Rajshahi Kings.
4) Sylhet Saints.
5) Barisal Pirates.
6) Khulna Tigers.
7) Chittagong Sailors.
8) Rangpur Greens (the city is known as the green city).
What do you think? Please post your own historically appropriate suggestions

This franchised based FC matches are very important. There is more money, more publicity. Players will be put under the spotlight. Also it will motivate and encourage participation of younger players.
Eventually i hope BCB is able to combine all these leagues. For instance, instead of having Dhaka Club Leage, NCL and now this franchise format 4 day, BPL, why not have the same teams playing all formats. So instead of playing back to back 4 dayers, first a 4 day, then limited over match. Run both leagues parallelly like county cricket. Benefits? There will be more competition, players will have more sense of belonging to a team.

Normally first class tournaments or leagues are held regional based (though there are some exceptions like Pakistan) all over the world. Even in our country goes also same way. One the other hand, Dhaka premier league are held club based traditionally and once it was one of the most competitive tournament in the world. It is still attractive and competitive tournament. So we should continue it. We turn DPL as different categories like first class and shorter version tournaments which will help our players to improve all types of formats.

I meant do it like they do it in Australia, where you get NSW Blues, Queensland Blues, South Australia Red Backs etc. If we have to make cricket successful, it cant be done solely through sporting means. The commercial side is very important. How many people follow the NCL? If we have teams like we have in BPL, and create a buzz, money will flow in via sponsorship. This means foreign coaches, 1-2 foreign players per team. Imagine having guys like Tino Best playing for a division.Teams will have merchandising opportunities. Youngsters will be encouraged to want to play for their divisions. The whole idea of competition, publicity, "In the limelight" etc will improve our game dramatically.
With 8 teams, if we play home and away each team will play 14 matches. Slot limited over matches in between. We are talking about a domestic calendar which could last around 4 months. The rest of the year have BPL, Dhaka League. Also send A Teams on tour in off season, or invite foreign A Teams to come and play. NT players must play a lot of FC matches.
All sounds nice in theory. Whether BCB can do it is the question. But we badly need year round cricket for it develop.

BCB also tried to make those Divisional teams of NCL as franchise based like BPL but all the Divisional cricket associations protested against the decision of BCB. If you want to make it attractive you need to invest more money to hire some popular players from abroad. If these are franchise based, franchisees would invest those money. Then our Divisional cricket associations don't have a lot of power on their respective teams. This is why they are not ready to be done it.

Got it. So the fear is franchise owners will interfere and call the shots as opposed to the actual people behind the division.
