Zia 4/17 - holy crap. He's really making a strong case for test team selection! Go Zia!

think he needs a lot more solid bowling performances before being considered for test selection. the way the test team is structured now is with riyad batting at #8 so there's no chance of another player slotting in unless they're good enough to make it as a pure bowler or pure batsmen. there is no room for a bits and pieces player in the current test team, imo his only chance of making the test team is by taking a pacers spot and i don't think he's had enough great bowler performances to warrant that yet....

Riyad batting at 8 is a joke He should bat at 3/4, get rid of Mofees. Zia can at least keep it tight. And it's not as if you've too many 'great' pacers waiting to be selected anyway.
Tamim
Anamul
Riyad
Naeem
Shakib
Mushfiqur
Nasir
Zia
Shohag
Mosharraff Hossain/Sunny/2nd pacer
Rubel/Nazmul/Other random pacer
PS: I'm not saying he's ready yet, but he is an option.

it's true riyad batting at #8 is a bit ridiculous, i mean a specialist bat batting at #8 in tests? (though i guess some argue he's an allrounder, but that is not my belief in the test format). but i'm still going to say for zia to make it he's going to have to make it as a specialist pacer, i know we don't really have any test quality pacers but rubel did alright in the last series, and although the others haven't done to well in tests they've put up a lot of quality domestic performances which is something zia hasn't really done to much, certainly not recently since he's reinvented himself more as a batsman.
if he can keep up these sort of bowling performances and if he plays in the shorter formats for the national team and does well with the ball then give him the go ahead in tests as a pacer. but i don't want to fall in a whole like we have before when players have been selected on the back of one good performance and turned out they weren't up to it.
also i think babu is an option to, as you said with zia, might not be ready yet, but an option nonetheless.

Zia stopped bowling regularly when he was injured around 2008 or 2009. He then started to concentrate on his batting. He himself told in an interview he lost few yards of pace after his injury.

abul doesn't count, he was selected off nothing, rubel is similar but the difference with rubel is he has improved his output for the national team, still struggling in tests but showed signs the last series of improvement. we all know shahadat isn't the best, but he did fine in the recent NCL (19 wickets, 29.9 strike rate average of 14.89), shafiul didn't do that badly either (16 wickets, 36.3 strike rate, average of 15.25). i might have missed zia's name but he's not on the most wickets list for the NCL this season and the lowest amount of wickets on the table is 6 so he must have got less than 6 wickets for the NCL so for whatever reason he didn't take many FC wickets recently. maybe the captain didn't bowl him much, not his fault, but it still remains he hasn't put the performances up recently. either way if he was bowled it means he failed to take his opportunities and if he didn't bowl then it means he lacks recent FC bowling experience which makes it tough to pick him for the test team off the back of one performance.
as i said before he's been reinvented as a batsman, he hasn't really been bowling much since, his bowling record is mainly from before the time he reinvented himself which was a year or so ago. if he had continued to bowl regularly then you could go ahead and say here is a bowler who's put up a lot of good performances, but when they haven't been bowling much for the last year and a half that record has to be studied more closely.
and i realise he's had a couple of good performances lately with the ball i.e. last t20I, today but has he been doing that consistently for the last year? he hasn't been bowling much, most of his time in that period was spent with the national team not bowling very often.

there you go, his bowling record mainly pertains to before let's say 2010. it's now 2013, so we can say he hasn't really been bowling regularly for a good 2 years, i respect his good performances and agree he's an option worth looking into but if you're playing test cricket you need to bowl regularly and you need to have regular performances backing you to show you're going to be able to handle test cricket. let's not be hasty, let him put in a few more performances, bowl a bit more regularly before drafting him into the test team.

Terrible batting by North Zone who boasts multiple national team batsmen. Good bowling by South Zone.

Zia got chance to bowl in 8 innings this season before today, he bowled 32.2 overs [only 4 overs per innings!!] got 4 wkts at 26.75avg 48.1SR
it is not his fault that his team captains not able to recognize the potential, even today's game he may not get chance to bowl 11 overs unless he strike very early too many times....

could be the captain not bowling him or that his body isn't capable of handling it since the injury. but either way it's meant he hasn't put up performance and hasn't got recent FC bowling experience and fitness. he needs to bowl enough to be considered for selection as a specialist bowler, captain's doing or not there is no way around it's not just for the teams good but also his own good. if his body is only use to bowling 4 overs per innings how is it going to hold up when he has to bowl 20 overs per innings? can he even sustain his consistency for that period of time? we don't know because he hasn't done it recently.

It'll be a vey tough tour for sure. Our boys need to work very hard in order to give the Lankans trouble. Remember we even got beat easily by Zimbabwe in this format.
