+1 to that! Gosh, he can go completely overboard often times

There is a reason why this brianlara7 is the least respected in this forum.
Athar is a substandard comm but he is the best we have got and lets appreciate it. Does any of you remember the comm during the t20 against Netherlands? Now that's whats called worst. Biased but his cricket knowledge exceeds that of many of us here. Atleast more than that of me.

Yes shamim engliah is better but his knowledge about cricket is dreadful. Sometimes he doesn't even recognise our players including Shakib.

I like both Atahar and Shamim.
Thank God for them, at least we have two commies in the box who does a decent enough job.
If they weren't good enough, no broadcaster would have consistently employ them.
If there are Richie Benauds on the pipeline, where are they ?

Athar Ali is a decent commie....his English is ok and so is his accent. I dont know if you have seen him upfront, but he is also a well dressed person as well. I think personall the OP is being quite harsh on him.
He is biased to some extent, then again you will find all commies are when their national team is playing.
He has represented Bangladesh in international cricket so he doesnt lack cricketing insight. You got it totally wrong on this point.
Even Shamim's English is OK and so is his accent, however what is cringe worthy an embaressing about him is his slap stick jokes.

Off topic. In 2011 when Pakistan toured bang
Rameez was in a bus and the driver was not the best in the business and he tweeted: "The bus driver did not know where his off stump was, just like Bangladeshi batsman"
That was quite an insult coming from one of the best batsman of his era. One should check his batting stats for reference.

Don't know why some of us botheted by Athahar! I frankly like his commentry, he sometime seems get bit emotional or sounds so much attached with team performnace but that is very fine to me. He was a player of class himself and very dignified individual.. Thoguh i don't know him personlly, but his act and persona just hints how a well mind person he is.

I think this type of threads should be discouraged if we want to have luminaries like him to grace the forum. Just from the perspective of diplomatic liaison. *not to confuse with elision of French grammar. imo

Atahar is a decent enough commentator, but he needs to control his emotions or his excitement sometimes, and his voice tone which goes up & down , his totlami , the use of dots.......are annoying,
Shamim on the other hand has a soothing voice , but Shamim is a super sissy, in either 1st or 2nd ODI during the last five overs we were batiing he said smething like "hit it if it is in your zone "
And Ata needs to stop saying Wise-captain , makes the other captain unwise.
Apart from that he is fine.
BTW, is Shamim the only commie who is not an ex-cricketer ? explains the sissyness.

If anything I'm actually embarrassed by the fact that this thread is still hovering at the top and this post of mine doesn't help the cause either. Atahar is from an era when English wasn't as widespread as it is today. In those days hardly any cricketer went to English medium schools. So I never really expected him to be very fluent in English. The next generation of cricketers turned commentators like Tamim, Mushfiq et al. will obviously speak much better when their turn comes. That said, despite Atahar's shortcomings you can always feel the enthusiasm and unbridled passion for BD cricket when he commentates.

Hes much much better than Shamim who seems really bias. I remember Shamim continually putting Danny Morrison down in the 3rd ODI v NZ, when Danny started talking about the kiwis and how if one wicket fell then multiple could fall, which is a fair statement.

But Athar attended Dhaka University at a time when teaching standards were much higher than they are today and many of his contemporaries at DU's Public Administration department speak excellent English.

Athar is from an era where cricketers came from the upper middle class and went to schools, even if they weren't English mediums, where English instruction was superior to the lay schools. For example the Shirazis went to my school.
There is nothing wrong with Athar's English. Yes, he does have a minor speech impediment.

Like it or not Atahar and Shamim are the only 2 "shonar dim" we have. I would rather have them do the commentary than have no BD commentators at all. And they do much better job than some Zim commentators.
We need to Appreciate what we have
