Default Weird/odd/funny news around the world

I know it's a time of distress for many. Hope this thread will give you folks a chance to divert your mind from the mindless killing that had just taken place.

Please feel to post more odd/weird/funny news from around the world.

Here's the first one. Read it a couple of weeks back. What a shame!

Quote:
You're in big trouble now, Mr. License!

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish police have solved the mystery of a Polish recidivist who clocked up 50 traffic offenses on different addresses and who was never caught, after one officer noticed his name meant driving license in Polish.

An internal police memo cited by Irish papers Thursday said officers taking details of Polish traffic offenders had been mistakenly using "Prawo Jazdy," printed in the top right corner of the driving license, as the holder's name.

"Prawo Jazdy is actually the Polish for driving license and not the first and surname on the license," the police memo dated June 2007 said. "It is quite embarrassing to see the system has created Prawo Jazdy as a person with over 50 identities."

A police spokesman declined to comment on the reports.

About 200,000 Polish people flocked to Ireland during the boom years of its "Celtic Tiger" economy but a poll in November indicated a third of them planned to leave due to recession.

Hasta la vista, baby

LONDON (Reuters) - A Mexican national who told airport immigration he was visiting Britain to see a friend was swiftly deported after a search unearthed a good-luck card in his luggage wishing him well for his "new life in the UK."

UK Border Agency officers at Manchester Airport routinely stopped the 40-year-old chef after he arrived on a flight from Los Angeles last Friday.

The man told them he was on a short trip to see a friend who was opening a restaurant in the area.

"However, a search of the passenger's baggage revealed a huge collection of Mexican food recipes and a good-luck card from his church wishing him well for his 'new life in the UK,'" the agency said in a statement.

Haha, yea. You can tell the general concensus, seeing this thread. It's like a desert here man.

Sooner or later we have to move on I guess. I just hope Orphy doesn't see this post of mine. He'll jump on me...and I won't like it (for obvious reasons).

Sy baba, how is this weird/odd/funny? Ever had that inexplicable craving for cheese 'n grease, that voracious hunger that can only be satisfied by the fusion of the tongue and 200% pure beef patties, that beastly appetite that can be calmed through no less than a thousand intestinal bombardments involving four double cheeseburgers and four junior chicken sandwiches?

Sometimes, just sometimes, food >> ahem ahem.

This one's kinda sad, but interesting nevertheless.

Cocaine in Spain is hidden by a sprain?

MADRID (Reuters) - A 66-year-old passenger who arrived at Barcelona airport in a wheelchair and with a leg cast made entirely of cocaine was arrested on Friday as he tried to get through customs.

The man, flying from Santiago, Chile, also had cocaine stashed in six cans of beer and two folding stools in his luggage, the Interior Ministry said. Police confiscated nearly 5 kilograms (11 pounds) of the drug in total.

Police believe the man, or his accomplices, may have broken the leg on purpose so as not to arouse the suspicions of customs officials. Spain is the primary entry point for cocaine into Europe and is the largest consumer of the drug in the European Union.

I think many of you probably have heard of this.

Identical twin escapes hanging in Malaysia after judge fails to tell brothers apart
An identical twin has escaped execution in Malaysia after a judge ruled it was impossible to determine which brother was the drug trafficker.

By Thomas Bell, South East Asia Correspondent
Last Updated: 5:08PM GMT 08 Feb 2009

The twins wept and embraced after judge Zaharah Ibrahim dismissed the case. "Although one of them must be called to enter a defence, I can't be calling the wrong twin to enter his defence. I also can't be sending the wrong person to the gallows," she told the court.

According to the judge there was no doubt that either Sathis Raj or Sabarish Raj, both 27 years old, was guilty of trafficking 166 kilograms of cannabis and 1.7 kilograms of opium, but because they looked the same and had the same DNA it was impossible to determine which one.

"This is a very unique case," she said.

The police arrested one of the twins when he parked his car outside a house in Kuala Lumpur and found bags of drugs in the car boot and inside the building. The second twin later arrived at the scene and was also arrested - but crucially only the first brother had house keys.

"It is clear that the first twin who was caught was the only one who had access to the house. Therefore, it is impossible for him not to know what was inside the bags," said the judge.

Luckily for the first brother, the police were later unable to say which one they had arrested first.

The case neatly created a version of the famous "prisoner's dilemma" in which each suspect can save himself by implicating the other, but only by mutual trust can they both walk free.

Execution is mandatory for drug trafficking in Malaysia and over 200 people have been executed since the law was introduced in 1975.

Default Not funny, but peculiar criminal

Source: Local LA newspaper, cant find the article online

Bangladeshi Madoff: Bangladeshi tax preparer in Los Angeles, better known as "Khokhon" was arrested last Thursday for opening credit cards under the names of his clients in the local bangladeshi community and practically destroying their credit scores in the process. Soon enough, one of the clients figured from the harassing calls and a quick check of his credit history, that something was terribly wrong.
Khokhon ripped off at least 30 local bangladeshis before the police got to him last week.

Well, I never thought it would be a trusted bangali in the community who would do this, but it happened and its pretty shocking. Especially, because the crime went undetected for so long and it took so much time to figure out who was behind all this.

Nigerian student gets 19 years' jail for love scam

Mar 16, 1:59 pm ETLAGOS (Reuters) – A Nigerian undergraduate has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for obtaining $47,000 (33,382 pounds) from an Australian woman by convincing her over the Internet that he was 57 years old, white, and madly in love with her.

Lawal Adekunle Nurudeen met his victim on the Internet in 2007 and convinced her that he was a British widower called Benson Lawson. He said he was an engineer working in Lagos whose wife and only child had been killed in a car accident.

"The victim, a 56-year-old woman from Australia, told the convict that she wanted a husband and all the men she had met always disappointed her," said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria's anti-corruption police.

"The convict, who is married with three children, instantly replied and told the victim she had met her Mr Right ... He sent the picture of a white man to foreclose any suspicions."

The woman sent Nurudeen money for medical treatment and travel costs to visit Australia. He spent the funds on two plots of land and a Honda Prelude car.

Nigerian confidence tricksters have a long history of extorting money via the Internet through "419" scams, named after the clause that outlaws them in Nigeria's penal code. Many are never caught.

The EFCC said Nurudeen was ordered to pay around $10,000 immediately and a further $250 a month to his victim until the full amount stolen was returned. She would also receive the proceeds of the sale of his land and car.

What about cheeky-flash because of falling lungi?

Baggy-trousered Aussie teen fined for cheeky flash

Thu Mar 19, 4:16 am ET

CANBERRA (Reuters) – An Australian teenager wearing baggy trousers and no underwear was fined after his pants fell down just as a female police officer was walking past, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Trent Joseph Wroe, 19, was fined A$250 (119 pounds), and ordered to wear a belt, after the February 28 incident in Mooloolaba in the northern Queensland state, the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper reported.

Police told a magistrate's court that Wroe deliberately bared his buttocks, but Wroe said he was wearing a pair of borrowed pants which were too big and fell down in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He said he would apologise to the police officer, and promised to wear a belt and underwear in future.

Thai 'spider-man' rescues autistic boy

BANGKOK (AFP) – A Thai fireman turned superhero when he dressed up as comic-book character Spider-Man to coax a frightened eight-year-old from a balcony, police said Tuesday.

Teachers at a special needs school in Bangkok alerted authorities on Monday when an autistic pupil, scared of attending his first day at school, sat out on the third-floor ledge and refused to come inside, a police sergeant told AFP.

Despite teachers' efforts to beckon the boy inside, he refused to budge until his mother mentioned her son's love of superheroes, prompting fireman Sonchai Yoosabai to take a novel approach to the problem.

The rescuer dashed back to his fire station and made a quick change into a Spider-Man costume before returning to the boy, he said.

"I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous," Somchai told local television.

The young boy immediately stood up and walked into his rescuer's arms, police said.

Somchai said he keeps the Spider-Man costume and an outfit of Japanese television character Ultraman at the station in order to liven up school fire drills.
