20 years !! That's right. Bangladesh has won it's first Test even before it completed it's first 10 years of Test cricket. Yes, it was against Zimbabwe, but don't you think there were minnows during India's time yet it took 20 damn years for them to win their first Test ? Also, Bangladesh was on the brink of winning a Test match against Pakistan back in 2003/04. Luckily Pakistan escaped. That was just 3/4 years after Bangladesh started playing Test cricket.

Statistics, more statistics and lies....
Can you also ask a supplementary ? How many test matches did they play in those 20 years ? Very few players in those days had continuity of play.
For example, Pakistan played 59 test matches in their first 17 years. In October 1964 , in one test match, they had 6 new test caps since they had not played a single test between the summer of 1962 and October 1964.
India probably even fewer, since between 1936 and 1946-47 they did not play a single test match.
So number of years is not really relevant. It is simply our defensive psychology that we keep bring up these stats.
Sri Lanka started in 1984 (?) Within two years they were scoring 3 centuries in their only rest match at Lords. Wettimuny scoring 190. I think they even took a first innings lead.
The real reason for our current predicament is that when we first started playing, i.e. in 2000, our standard was lower than when they started - so the trend is not surprising.
We did not have the Hanif's, Hazare's, Mankad's , Fazal's etc. who could save matches or occasionally win some.
Our day will also come. The gap in standards is clearly narrowing. However, the "attitude" we take into a test match is still immature !

WI 2nd innings 2004 at home (Lara captained, Gayle, Chandurpaul, Sarwan everyone played) 47 allout http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/64077.html
NZ 1st innings 73 allout Flemming at the helm http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63989.html

NZ 2nd innings 2006 76 allout http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/64107.html
India 1st innings 2008 76 allout http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/332912.html
Eng 79 (2002), 81(2007), Australia 93 (2004), SA 84(2006)
All teams have their (bad) moments. In the top 20 worst innings scored in this decade (2000) there is only one BD innings. Zim, WI (real team) with 4 then England takes the top honor with 3.

I for one think BD got test status 5 years earlier than time. And if you look at the performance at that time, it will show why. Many can shout about Infra structure and stuff, but the truth is, we weren't ready for test cricket in 2000.

absolutely. the way forward is to support the fledgling team and watch them develop into a more competitive side, the way backward is to selectively quote statistics to justify failure.

Tendulkar shows his class. You dont stay at the top for 20 continuous years just by chance.
And guys, for f*&% sake, this is not a thread about how long which team took to win their first match and all those bullcrap.
It was about a great man's great sportsmanship and how Bangladesh team should learn from it.
Take your crap somewhere else and bang your heads out.

One of the few Indian players that I really admire. If only taught his teammates some class.

Ahh. Here we go again. Just out of curiosity do you do your research thoroughly or you do it just for the sake of it ?
Those "20 long years" you speak off, means jack sh*t because since India got the test status (1932), we played 25 test matches (25th test being our FIRST test win); thanks to very rare test matches (atleast for us) and WWII. This basically translates into a simpler logic: ~1 test/year. During our pursuit of first test win, we managed to draw 12 games and lost about 12 games which is nowhere close to what BD has managed (err..not managed to).
Before tasting their first victory, BD lost about 30 odd games and managed to draw 3 games.Mind you, you played all these 35 odd games in a span of 5 years (of course its no one's fault that India played 1 test/year and BD played more than 5-6/year).
Stop comparing India and Bangladesh' starts because that is like comparing oranges to apples.

Btw, this is why tendulkar is class apart. SRT does not believe in sh*t talking about the opponents and always respects the game and the ones who follow/play the game.

Being happy about gesture is fine. But what about the statement by Shakeb "We should bat like Indians"
It was anything but that.

This has been discussed over and over in many different forums of many different forms and frankly, these debates are kind of annoying. People on both sides would do a whole lot of good by moving on and living in the present for a change.

Truly a class act. In fact, I admire and respect players from India probably more than any other team. Especially Tendulkar, Dravid and Dhoni. Of course they have their bad apples, but so does every country.
