Default New Zealand v Zimbabwe, Second Test

Zim batting first and NZ will be looking towards ending it sooner than the last time

In the fifth over, Zims are 7 for 3, Bond 3 for1.

3 down at 7 is simply unacceptable. They need someone to make 100..

I pray and hope that NZ have a low run rate. That would Help Zim to extend the game to 4 days.

Taibu is the only one who is always performing well in these crisis times for Zimbabwe. Good captain!

Overall not a bad first day! The run out was a break for the Zim team. Showing some fight.

if anyone's watching: Mahwire the bowler is just threatening NZ to bat again. He just scored 21 runs of Martin's over. they have crossed 200. 47 runs left to avoid innings defeat. Sad part is no more wickets left.

Zimbabwe lost their Last Wicket while celebrating Mahwire's half-century!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a silly thing to do at Test cricket level!!

"Mahwire gets his 50! Mpofu runs towards him after completing first run, throw towards keeper and McCullum whips off the bails, Mppofu is in shock, so this match is over with a drama!"

How could McCullum, NZ take of the bail??? This is not sportsman like. He should have warned Mpofu. Its like running out the runner without bowling which would be no-ball. Geez! NZ management must ponder on this. Well done Mpofu. Atleast the Zim papers would have something to write about other than their teams faliure.

According to Law 42.15, the bowler is allowed to attempt to run out the non-striker before entering his delivery stride.

According to Law 23.3(viii), the umpire will call and signal dead ball if teh ball does not leave bowlers hand for any reason other than the situation stated in Law 42.15.

So, if the bowler attempts to run out the non-striker after entering the delivery stride, Umpires will call and signal dead ball--not a No ball.

In the Zimbabwe-New Zealand match situation, Mpofu ran toward Mahwire after completing the first run and ball was still in fielder’s hand. Ball came to the keeper after he ran out of his ground to meet Mahwire. Ball is not dead until it is settled in the bowler's or wicket-keeper's hand. So, McCullum had right to attempt the run out. We might call for sportsmanship, but it was certainly hard for McCullum to judge whether the batsman trying a second run or just doing a dumb thing like congratulating the batsman while the ball is still in play.

Quote from Cricinfo "How They Were Out" Section of today's match:

Chris Mpofu run out (Vettori/McCullum) 3 (207 all out)
Completed single that brought Mahwire to 50, and trotted back down the pitch to congratulate him without waiting for the ball to be adjudged dead.

Thank you babubangla for correcting me on the no-ball deadball issue.

NZ should not have done that. The wicket keeper knew exactly what he was doing. Although the out is legit, it is not the right thing to do. Especially when your team is humiliating the other team. Its no longer a gentleman's game. It’s like winning with whatever it takes mentality and when someone is down you hit him. This has started with the sledging and undermining your opponents. As an ambassador of goodwill these superstar athletes need to do the right thing.
